If you like Photoshop but would like a freebie alternative, check out Photo Pea.
It runs in your Internet Browser so no need to install anything and will open and save to various formats including Photoshop PSD.
Very useful.

Im always a bit dubious using online photo editors. Do they keep a copy of whats been edited or saved?

At the moment im using Paint Shop Pro 2018 and Aftershot Pro 3.

I've just used PhotoPea by loading the page and then disabled my Internet connection for half an hour and was able to load and save images without issues.

The best free image editing software has to be The Gimp (mentioned previously in this thread). Almost as good as photoshop.
