Many apologies for laziness - not followed thread, just kept nipping in to see what was what.
Released IP this morning and rebooted Samsung STB. Now got: I'm on (or was on) 2mb silver tier. Quote:

Re: [Merged] Speed Increases 1st June - 2meg to 4meg
Does anybody know why STB users have been upgraded first this time? Every upgrade i've been part of they've been last. STB were upped to 4mbit last week in Stoke while the modem users are being made to wait. Wouldn't it make sense to upgrade STB and Modems in one area at a time? Instead of seperately
|
Re: [Merged] Speed Increases 1st June - 2meg to 4meg
Maybe there are less users connected via STB's - gives NTL chance to bring the changes into effect slowly maybe?

Re: [Merged] Speed Increases 1st June - 2meg to 4meg
I was upgraded a couple of days ago and my cable modem page says 4096000 bps for download as it should do.
However, I have run the speed test at least 20 times and it ALWAYS comes up at 2.74-2.76Mbps never slower and never faster. I have tried it at 3am, 10am, 12pm, 3pm, 8pm etc and its ALWAYS the same. I know that I should only get UP TO 4mb but there seems to be some form of cap here - is it my ntl:home 120 modem? example: Sat, 24 Jun 2006 12:39:54 UTC 1st 512K took 1453 ms = 352.4 KB/sec, approx 2904 Kbps, 2.84 Mbps 2nd 512K took 1515 ms = 338 KB/sec, approx 2785 Kbps, 2.72 Mbps 3rd 512K took 1516 ms = 337.7 KB/sec, approx 2783 Kbps, 2.72 Mbps 4th 512K took 1516 ms = 337.7 KB/sec, approx 2783 Kbps, 2.72 Mbps Overall Average Speed = approx 2814 Kbps, 2.75 Mbps Thanks Ben |
Re: [Merged] Speed Increases 1st June - 2meg to 4meg
try downloading a file from a source like Microsoft or something with a good fast download speed (like NTL's newsgroups for example). That will show you what kind of speed you are getting. The speed test isn't always accurate.

Hi All, I just joined the forum, thought it about time -- I was reading this thread this morning when all went pear shaped !! as others reported I too had strange speeds settings in the modem, even stranger both pc's had different readings for the same modem ?
It also tried to give me an IP addy starting 169. something or other, all that did was screw up my network config. Anyway I now join you all in waiting for the ellusive 4mb |

Re: [Merged] Speed Increases 1st June - 2meg to 4meg
the 169.* basicly means it hasnt been given the real 8*.* ntl network address from the network and windows has seen fit to give you that 169.* instead.
if you want to mess with your networking addresses (not for in-experienced pc users) then take a look at PE Network Configurator http://www.geocities.com/pierremounir/ as also found on the UBCD4Win livecd MSwindows maker. very useful at times, and even the novice can use it to see thier network settings and will be safe as long as they dont change something they dont yet understand...... http://www.geocities.com/pierremounir/bin/penetcfg.png ohh and welcome. |

My connection in Farnborough Hants (GU14) went up to 4mb on thursday (well around 3.8mb accoridng to speed tests) but today its been really slow and speed tests are showing just 1.6mb.
I do notice there is load balancing schedualed for this week so hopefully that sorts it but if not im not going to be happy as my connection will have got worse rather than better as it was alwsy reporting 1.9mb before the upgrade |

Serious question for anyone that knows. Why does NTL's network seem to go tits up at the drop of a hat. While the BT infrastructure, which must have god knows how much more traffic passing along it at any given time - cope so much better with phone calls, internet traffic and the like.
Surely a dedicated cable network with far less users and therefore less traffic should cope much better with things and provide faster and more stable speeds? |

Re: [Merged] Speed Increases 1st June - 2meg to 4meg

I have friends who are now quite happily using ADSL services that provide stable speeds of 10meg with 700k upload, on BT's network, which also provides god knows how much traffic in just phone calls. I mean NTL seems unable to provide a good solid 4megs to a fair few folks on these boards. I am no expert which is why I asked. But many freinds on ADSL usually comment with things like, "your cable disconnected again? your email is down again? they can't even give you half the 10meg speed" and so the list goes on, while they sit happily using thier internet connections without ever waking in the morning and wondering if it's still up and running. But I digress, this is way off topic and I was asking while I was bored waiting for my 4meg connection. Was just curious. But in my eyes I think if either should be flakey, it's the old street cables carrying ADSL. Out of curiosity (again) what would be the percentages for those who are with NTL for the internet, and those who have TV as well? |

Assuming 4mb still hasn't been done by that date of course. Given the myriad folk who appear to have been given 10mb at or below the price of 4mb "just for asking / threatening to leave", it's at least as valid a reason. Not the least because a fair %age of them appear to believe that we are all on 4mb now by confusing billing with service level. Ring early and often though, they appear arbitrary and capricious with respect to giving these discounts. Who you speak to and how many they've done in the last hour / day / week is probably significant. |

So at an educated guess, what percentage of the country now has the upgrade? And if it's anything less than say 60-70%, does anyone really think that last portion will get done in a few days, what it took them weeks to do for everyone else?
I am seriously thinking about going back to 10meg as I am bored of waitng now. The upload speed is what's making me impatient as time marches on. |

Re: [Merged] Speed Increases 1st June - 2meg to 4meg
Hi
I've got a cable modem being installed next week, but I'm now wondering whether I need it because I'm getting 4mb on a Pace STB. My question is, is there a performance advantage to having a separate cable modem for the internet and an STB for the digital TV, or shall I just cancel the cable modem? I'm in West London, btw, for those keeping track of the rollout. I've read that Pace boxes aren't supposed to handle more than 1mb, but here are my figures after the upgrade from 2mb that happened the other day. (I've had a couple of Pace boxes and they've both have been able to handle the upgrades from 512 > 1mb > 2mb, although the TV picture sometimes blacks for a second when downloading heavily) iEPG: 4.1 b79 Hardware type: DiTV 1000+ Hardware version: P1 b4 Software: 3_2_P22N_P_P1000+R Speakeasy Bandwidth Test Results: Download:3783 kbps (472.9 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload: 348 kbps (43.5 KB/sec transfer rate) Cheers Steve (Hope I'm not shooting myself in the foot with any of this!) |

On a side-note when I had a Samsung STB I found the picture a LOT better than the pace, so it'd be worth getting a new STB if poss anyway. |

Thanks for your quick reply. I think you're right, I should just wait for the modem instead of queueing on the phone to cancel it, tho I might give them a ring about the Samsung picture quality! Steve |
