Well thanks for that.I had a result today, waited 15 mins to get through.I said to the girl,i was told to call back when i got my bill if a had info about the 10 mbps.I said to her that i have gone to www.ntlworld.com/upgrade,but it told me to call you up.She put me on hold for 30 seconds, came back and said,"you will need a new modem, and the earliest will be 3rd January afternoon"I said Ok then, that is free isn`t it, she said yes.

So it looks like i will get full speed after Christmas then.:)

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

After upgrading from 2mb to 10mb I was getting speeds of around 6.7mb. I have a Ambit 120 modem and a Belkin wireless router. I found that I could get 9.8mb using the wireless side of the router using a laptop. I have tonight formatted the main computer to see if it was a software problem and found the cause to be Zone Alarm Firewall, as soon as I deleted it I was then running at full speed.

I hope this helps some of you and apologise if this has been said before.

Okay, can someone explain this to me please? According to the NTL email I just got from NTL them selves, 1MB and 2MB go to unlimited, but it doesn't state anything about the option of being upgraded to 10MB with lower bandwidths at the same price? Has NTL ditched that idea?

Has NTL changed its idea over the upgrade of customers to the 10mb service???

I read that customers were being upgraded at no extra cost to the 10mb. I know see they are charging £34.99 for the higher speed. Is this for new customers??? Or does it apply across the board. And does this mean that next year (if they are still upgrading for free 'at no extra cost') that we will have one of their famous yearly letters saying the price increase????

Hope someone can answer this one.

No, currently the users that had been paying £37.99 (34.99 from January) have received the free upgrade to 10Mb. The 1Mb and 2Mb users will get the free upgrade later next year at different caps and prices for free, unless they want to stay on the 1Mb and 2Mb unlimited packages.

I have read that after the config file for a Samsung STB has been downloaded, that when pressing the page up, page down, blue. it will show something like bundle.03. Mine still shows as high. Does this mean I have not got the config file yet, or does it vary from area to area what is shown. I reboot daily, but still shows the same. Maximum download is still 3mb rather than 5.

Many thanks

Thanks for that.
I tried ringing three times, the first they cut off the service and forgot to put it back on so it took me a couple of hours to get it back again. The next two times (including today) they said there is a trial and I cannot be part of it. I referred them to the web site where it said I sgould get by end of December and they told me it was wrong!!

Also when they cut me off, I ended up getting billed extra for having a part month, it was only a few pounds, but I'm scared to ring again incase they charge me even more!!

Its pretty sad that nearly 30 days after receiving the "Good News your going to 10Mb" letter some CS people still think its a "trial" for a selected few. This is what I was told when I called 3 weeks ago.

I have rebooted the Samsung STB several times and still on 3Mb. Its now 28th December. I'd call CS again but what's the point? And I refuse to pay £50!!

Used to get 3.06Mb on the speed tests but lately its between 2 and 2.75. I wish NTL would get its support act together BEFORE announcing upgrades as it just makes them look like arses. Don't they have internal memos????

Is it worth going the retention route?

I gave CS a call this morning as had my bill in today which said "10Mb Broadband" on it...!

According to CS I am on 10Mb so I called Tech Support. They confirmed that I am on 10Mb and said everything their end was fine.......

.....so I now turn to the wonderful people here to see if you can advise me on how to at least squeeze 5Mb out of this shiny Samsung!!!!!

Here's the setup:

Samsung STB at 10Mb
into a Linksys BEFSR41 v2 router on firmware 1.46.02
into a PC running XP Pro

Speed tests:

Robin's site:

Wed, 28 Dec 2005 12:58:57 GMT
1st 128K took 231 ms = 567411 Bytes/sec = approx 4721 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 180 ms = 728178 Bytes/sec = approx 6058 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 170 ms = 771012 Bytes/sec = approx 6415 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 150 ms = 873813 Bytes/sec = approx 7270 kbits/sec

Wed, 28 Dec 2005 12:59:23 GMT
1st 128K took 190 ms = 689853 Bytes/sec = approx 5740 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 170 ms = 771012 Bytes/sec = approx 6415 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 3285 ms = 39900 Bytes/sec = approx 332 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 240 ms = 546133 Bytes/sec = approx 4544 kbits/sec

Wed, 28 Dec 2005 12:59:45 GMT
1st 128K took 121 ms = 1083240 Bytes/sec = approx 9013 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 3244 ms = 40404 Bytes/sec = approx 336 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 171 ms = 766503 Bytes/sec = approx 6377 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 3205 ms = 40896 Bytes/sec = approx 340 kbits/sec

As you can see these vary quite a bit!

ADSL Guide:

Direction
Actual Speed
True Speed (estimated)
Downstream 2392 Kbps (299.0 KB/sec) 2583 Kbps (inc. overheads) Upstream 482 Kbps (60.3 KB/sec) 520 Kbps (inc. overheads)

NDO:

On Wednesday, 28th December, 2005
Your bandwidth measured as:

2.31 Mbps

which means you can download at 295.89 KB/sec. from our servers.

DSL Zone uk:

1.99 Mbps
which is around 254.45 KB/s Your connection is performing very poorly (20% efficiency)

Dan Elwell's test: 2154kb/s

So, the upstream at 482 seems abut right but the d/l speed is nearer 2Mb than even the 3Mb I was on before. Tests on the old 3Mb service always gave me around 2.96 as a result pretty much constantly.

I'm getting lower speeds on 10 than on 3...!!!!

Can anyone of you technical wizards see what could be wrong? Why its lower on the 10 service than my reliable 3 service?

Cheers in advance and HAPPY NEW YEAR to all at Cable Forum.

Lima-You will probaly need a new router,or don`t use your router.I read this about your router,it only has a 10mbps on the internet side:

Built-in 10/100Mbps four-port switch (IEEE 802.3 10BaseT, 802.3u 100BaseTX). Devices on the LAN which are equipped with 100Mbps NICs can communicate with each-other at maximum speed, while Internet communications occur at a maximum of 10Mbps.

Well, I don't know if its because everyone is at home on the net for Xmas, but since Xmas, my 'upto 5Mb' Sammy has been decidely sub 3Mb in Pompey on the new config file ;

Wed, 28 Dec 2005 15:15:50 UTC

1st 512K took 2073 ms = 247 KB/sec, approx 2035 Kbps, 1.99 Mbps
2nd 512K took 1963 ms = 260.8 KB/sec, approx 2149 Kbps, 2.1 Mbps
3rd 512K took 3295 ms = 155.4 KB/sec, approx 1280 Kbps, 1.25 Mbps
4th 512K took 1592 ms = 321.6 KB/sec, approx 2650 Kbps, 2.59 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 2029 Kbps, 1.98 Mbps

It was hitting the 5Mb mark before Xmas :(

What a good idea guys! Took the Linksys out of line - direct ethernet into the PC et voila!!

- ran three different speed tests and got between 4.8 and 7Mbps

So, just ordered a Linksys WRT54GS-UK for £49 off Amazon. Will add wireless too so I can use the laptop away from the desk here :)

I guess the old BEFSR41 v2 is heading for the "Internet home for old routers" i.e. Ebay...

Thanks for your help guys..

I am getting similarly erratic speeds with my Linksys WRT54GX (only a couple of months old) via wireless, nowhere near 5mb and sometimes more like 1.5mb.

Will an upgrade to a standalone cable modem cure this ?

lets be honest now if there touting the lines as 10mg then 10mg they should be not UPTO 10mg thats clearly misleading joe public into thinkin there gonna get a 10mg line and to be honest most people on here i have seen dont get 10mg BW for sure a lot are getting sub 3mg what they used to have so crappy ntl need to get there finger outta there backsides and deliver the correct speeds,on top of that they also need to sort out CS like giving them the correct information so they at least can seem like they understand:) and to answer the question of its xmas it will be busy and you wont get the speed...easy answer there DONT tout those damm speeds if the network cant deliver them ffs:)

Ignition 29-12-2005 08:16

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

Speeds have by all operators always, ALWAYS been touted as 'up to' speeds, there's no guarantee there of 10Mbit.

Unless an ISP owns the entire internet they cannot guarantee speeds to anyone. Even leased lines costing a few hundred quid a month only guarantee bandwidth inside the service provider's own network.

If you want 'guaranteed' 10Mbit best dip hand a lot lot deeper into pocket than £35/month ;)

Bulldog, UKOnline, Be, Telewest, all 'up to' speeds.

Yes, but people are saying they are getting the full speed when they connect directly to their STB's, which suggests that it's not an issue of when they're doing it.

eh?

If you are talking about the router speed issue's ntl cant be blamed for user's using their own routing hardware that is incapable of the speeds.

I am just trying to get a simple answer to a simple question but instead I keep being blamed for a problem other people are having as well!

All I want to know is will a switch to a standalone cable modem solve this issue or is it an issue people are seeing with SACMs as well ?

If switching solves the problem, I will wait until it is possible to be switched. If it does not, I will have to consider switching to another provider.

My router is perfectly capable of handling the 3mb service I was on before the "upgrade". I do not want an "upto 5mb" service that only actually goes up to 1.5mb, I want, minimally a 3mb service.

---------- Post added at 23:02 ---------- Previous post was at 22:50 ----------

Speeds when connected directly:

1st 512K took 4737 ms = 108.1 KB/sec, approx 891 Kbps, 0.87 Mbps
2nd 512K took 3194 ms = 160.3 KB/sec, approx 1321 Kbps, 1.29 Mbps
3rd 512K took 2825 ms = 181.2 KB/sec, approx 1493 Kbps, 1.46 Mbps
4th 512K took 4586 ms = 111.6 KB/sec, approx 920 Kbps, 0.9 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 1156 Kbps, 1.13 Mbps

When directly connected, XP reports a 10mb connection, not 100mb which would seem to be the problem.

Chrysalis 29-12-2005 22:17

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

Right so you are on the 10meg service with a STB and the above speedtest is what you just connected directly?

The scores are low but a sacm will not improve it if the problem is local congestion, the best way to find out if it is congestion is repeat it in 3 or 4 hours around 2 or 3am and see if their is a marked improvement. If the speeds rise to around 5meg then it will be a case then you can get a sacm to take the max to 10meg, if they stay low I would consider ringing in to report a fault and get an engineer callout, this may also get you a sacm free of charge if the engineer feels it will help.

I updated from 2mb to 10mb on xmas day. Little present to myself. Not to happy though. Very unstable. Highest dl spped I've hit is 700kbs. Ambit 120, USB connected. Glasgow.

404 for me too ;) - but to answer your question, a 'straight through' ethernet cable will work, easiest way is get a ready made one from e.g. Maplin or PCWorld. :)

47.68MB... that's exactly 50000000 bytes. Hrm what comes in that size slice, and can be delivered from FTP which is managed by a 'site op' ;)

Suggest you get an FTP with a *real* connection not bbb.se ;)

Simple really, a 10Mbit site that's delivering said 47.68MB files isn't that likely to have 10Mbit free to upload due to various other demands being placed on its' bandwidth :)

No judgement at all from me, if you can't appreciate irony that's another thing to write in the sicknote :)

I'm actually not going to dignify that with an answer. You've over 5k posts on this forum mate, I'd hope you know how to both use the search facility on here and that reading threads before you ask questions is the way to go.

No point in me or anyone else suggesting that new posters read forums rather than just posting when someone who's been a member for over a year does the same.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

Well I'm currently less than impressed with the upgrade and it appears to me (especially after reading other posts on here) that this whole upgrade was for the marketing departments purposes not the customer. Overall throughput on my 'upgraded' connection is no better (and possibly slightly worse) although the peak burst speed is higher this is not sustained. I have tested this against known entities/servers and know that the issue is not 'the sending server(s)'.

I've also found that my connection/STB is no longer stable and since the upgrade I've lost connectivity more times than I can count (pre-upgrade my connection was rock solid). For some reason the STB seems to lose the ability to handle TCP connections (ping/ICMP still work) and this connectivity loss is getting mighty annoying.

NTL have also seriously short changed STB users with their 5Mbit or £50 SACM upgrade.

Just my tuppence.

Out of curiosity, why aren't all ntl customers advised to use ethernet instead of usb... I couldn't get anywhere near half the speed of my 10mb connection with the usb cable, but now I've changed to ethernet I'm hitting near enough full speeds consistently (touch wood). Makes me angry, because now that I look back, I wasn't getting the full use of my 2mb connection either.

In Glasgow, Ambit 120.

PS. Thanks Chris W for the advice BTW

I dont have a router, and I just tried to shut down both pc's and use a crossover and a normal ethernet lead in the modem to my pc and it would NOT get a ip addy no matter how I tried.

I find Ethernet is over complex and just annoys me with the problems hence why I like usb its simple and once done I dont get annoying 169 addys...

How do I network it into my pc? I have both types of ethernet lead.

If you swap equipment on the SACM you need to power everything down including the power to the SACM itself, wait a few mins then power up the SACM and wait for the lights to settle and then power up the PC.

and also saxo when it is up and running its only UP TO 10mg not def 10mg:) all dependant on load and routing etc etc
ie: if you have a lot of people online in your area it will slow it down and if your getting files etc from say .us or .aus theres nearly always routing and packet losses

I wouldn't rush - I'm in Fareham and my Samsung STB got the stb-bund03.cm config just before Christmas and my download speeds have been all over the place since e.g. (using Robin Walker's speed test)

1st 128K took 126 ms = 1040254 Bytes/sec = approx 8655 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 1501 ms = 87323 Bytes/sec = approx 727 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 594 ms = 220660 Bytes/sec = approx 1836 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 1469 ms = 89225 Bytes/sec = approx 742 kbits/sec

I get similar results using ncftp for downloading - uploads are constant though. I spoke to broadband support and they said that they couldn't help at the moment and that moving to a separate cable modem wouldn't make any difference. However, they did say that some rebalancing work is planned in my area near the end of this month and that this should help. If anyone has any other advice then it would be much appreciated.

My computer is running XP Pro and it's directly connected to my STB via ethernet using the NIC built-in to my computer's motherboard. I've tested my computer with a cross-over cable to a work's laptop and had no problems transferring files at 7 MB/s in either direction so I don't think it's my setup. NIC speed is currently on auto although I have tried forcing it (no improvements) and using netstat -s shows no errors. Thanks.

Looks like your set up is fine Keith.
Robin Walkers test, excellent as it is only has small files to download so will not give you that great an indication of your speed. I prefer to use http://www.irishisptest.com/myspeed/ it gives me a better indication with higher download speeds. Give that one a try and see what your downloads are like.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

I've just spoken to a manger in Technical Support in the UK (why? I was making a complaint about something I won't go into here). Seems that for the last few weeks the whole ntl network has been falling apart. People losing connections, connection speeds all over place etc. Whilst he wouldn't say this is a result of the 10Mb upgrade, it does seem odd that it's happened at the same time.

As for us Samsung STB users on a 10Mb connections, seems we'll get up to a 5Mb connection, subject to network traffic (this may already of been posted but, I'm not reading 100+ pages(not posts) of a topic to find out. Seems it's unlikely to change so if you want 10Mb get a SAMC for £50 (unless you can convince ntl to do it for free, which I'm currenly working on;) )

However, due to current network problems, and this may just be for me in Watford, my 3Mb/10Mb (allegedly I'm now on 10Mb anyway) is running at about 2Mb. No estimation of when the fault will be recitfied, which is understandable really.

My current mood: Oh how I wish I took Bulldog up on their offer last month to pay for my BT line to be reconnected and use their up to 8Mb connection!!

p.s. Spent over an hour on the phone to various ntl people today and everyone was really helpful. I think the staff are actually embarrased that Samsung STB users paying £38pm still only get a 3-5Mb connection unless they pay £50

Really?

For a start 10Mbit won't affect people's connection stability, and you'd expect connection speeds to be a lot more variable as you push the speeds up anyway!

Network falling apart my rear end.

Those guys might be used to everyone getting full speeds nearly all the time unless there's a major fault but that's just not the case now. Best effort is the way it goes.

When did they offer to install you? I ordered at the start of November and was quoted February - March for delivery of the service. They were still selling the service in this area and quoting 2 week leadtimes unofficially, while their website quoted 4 - 6 weeks, and for those living in areas where they forgot to upgrade their kit before they started yet another massive ad push add another 2 months or more onto that 4 - 6 weeks.

Complete and utter Crap. If he did say that the man is spouting crap.

However

If the Network is falling apart then why do i get good fast speeds with no drop outs ?

Due to a problem the other day with a disconnection. I made some enquires for my area. Bulldog would only commit to March for my area if i signed up now :Yikes:.

Also 2.2 km from the exchange means i might only get 3 to 4 meg at the best of times for there upto 8 meg service.

ADSL2+ Well dont even get me going on the time frame they gave me for that.

So i decided to tell them where to stuff it.

you know adsl is fast becoming shaky in my eyes, adslguide doesnt make pretty viewing, so many yellow and red exhanges, bt's cbc pricing model is causing crazy things like plusnet capping at 128kbit on a 2meg connection, since plusnet brought metronet they are customers of 465mbit of bandwidth to 155mbit at plusnet and all sorts of other problems. There are exceptions of course like zen and ukonline but things are looking rosier for us at ntl now I think.

Since before chrimbo mines been terrible, it was fine on 3 meg, but either way its bad news now, ive been on the phone, and its been escalated to level 2.
heres my test, they all look like this.

Wed, 4 Jan 2006 18:45:56 UTC
1st 128K took 2062 ms = 63565 Bytes/sec = approx 529 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 1297 ms = 101058 Bytes/sec = approx 841 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 4250 ms = 30840 Bytes/sec = approx 257 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 8141 ms = 16100 Bytes/sec = approx 134 kbits/sec

Ive just rang back, [as nobody rang me back as promised] i've just had my next door neighbour round, and both theirs, and another further up are all as bad. It seems the case is still open, but the chap i spoke to said the 10 meg has given some problems.
Personally mine sounds more like a local fault, just hope it gets fixed, its been like this for almost 2 weeks now. :(
Just tried the Paul Marsden speedtest:

Wed, 4 Jan 2006 19:18:42 UTC

1st 512K took 27547 ms = 18.6 KB/sec, approx 153 Kbps, 0.15 Mbps
2nd 512K took 24656 ms = 20.8 KB/sec, approx 171 Kbps, 0.17 Mbps
3rd 512K took 37578 ms = 13.6 KB/sec, approx 112 Kbps, 0.11 Mbps
4th 512K took 53141 ms = 9.6 KB/sec, approx 79 Kbps, 0.08 Mbps

also for sage013: bulldog suks and i quote that from two friends that are no longer on it,they said the service was below par and there support was worse than nthell which i do find hard to believe:)

Hi, thanks but I'd already tried those and they didn't help. The attached image (if I've managed to attach it correctly) better explains what's happening with my download speed - downloading the 50MB iso file from http://homepage.ntlworld.com/testmyspeed/ shows the speed is up and down all of the time rather than being a reasonably flat line (as you'd expect).

i think i am also in the same boat, i got NTL 10MB about 11 days ago, all was perfect, and i was amazed, ever since christmas i've had sites not loading at all, streaming videos not loading, my ping to uk gaming servers is still also quite high and most dl's this year (2k6) have bordered on 10-50kb/sec, microsoft.com dl's are hitting about 850 kb/sec whereas before christmas (I ran the .net 23mb download as a test) it would take 18 seconds for 23mb at approx ~1250KB/sec

Running a DL test on that very file now..not too bad, 26.2 seconds, approx 1100kb/s average. But i can't dl everything from microsoft, all other dl sites, filefront, fileplanet etc.. are running slower than P2P on 1mb.

Speed test results:

1st 512K took 9266 ms = 55.3 KB/sec, approx 456 Kbps, 0.45 Mbps
2nd 512K took 8297 ms = 61.7 KB/sec, approx 508 Kbps, 0.5 Mbps
3rd 512K took 9078 ms = 56.4 KB/sec, approx 465 Kbps, 0.45 Mbps
4th 512K took 10031 ms = 51 KB/sec, approx 420 Kbps, 0.41 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 462 Kbps, 0.45 Mbps

you know opera is cpu hungry when processing http results of that testmyspeed was Thu, 05 Jan 2006 11:07:42 GMT
1MB File download took 11157 ms = 94 KiloBytes / sec.

But immediatly before that I downloaded a video clip in getright at full 10mbit.

IE was only 3mbit tho, I wonder if the web server is becoming overloaded.

I was having problems too. I upgraded to 10mb on the 25th and wasnt getting even half that speed. I changed to an ethernet cable and it went up to around 7-8mb max. I have now uninstalled my Zonealarm firewall (out of mere curiosity) and I am now hitting nearly full speed... this cant be coincidental.

1st 512K took 438 ms = 1169 KB/sec, approx 9633 Kbps, 9.41 Mbps
2nd 512K took 422 ms = 1213.3 KB/sec, approx 9998 Kbps, 9.76 Mbps
3rd 512K took 437 ms = 1171.6 KB/sec, approx 9654 Kbps, 9.43 Mbps
4th 512K took 438 ms = 1169 KB/sec, approx 9633 Kbps, 9.41 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 9730 Kbps, 9.5 Mbps

Does anyone know of a less restricting firewall that is as good as ZA?
