What the joke this weekend has been just because Virgin Media UK are asking an broadcaster who broadcasts BBC repeats - who we pay £150.50 per year for - to take cut in money Virgin pays and more On Demand box set.

But some viewers want Virgin to give in and pay more for BBC repeats. Just to keep 25% of Virgin viewers happy. (According to viewing figures).

BBC News web site says that Virgin Media UK did offer to broadcast Drama, Dave, Really, Home and Yesterday but UKTV did remove the offer an the 11th hour.

Quote:

Virgin Media chief digital entertainment officer David Bouchier said company was prepared to restore UKTV's free channels "immediately" with its permission.

He said UKTV had been willing to let it continue carrying the free channels but at the "11th hour that offer was withdrawn and that is why we have the chaos today".

Well to me UKTV refusing to allow the free UKTV channels to air on virgin puts them in the wrong. They won’t bully me I can watch all material elsewhere just watched Wodney and wacquel only fools and horses, including on demand, come on uktv there are many ways we can get round this at a loss of profit to UKTV, keep up the good work

But some viewers want Virgin to give in and pay more for BBC repeats. Just to keep 25% of Virgin viewers happy. (According to viewing figures).

Right, let's make a start on correcting this:

- UKTV does not just 'broadcast BBC repeats'. While it admittedly is a high proportion of their shows, UKTV original productions like Taskmaster and others are not only highly viewed, but also award winning. There's also a significant number of US acquisitions and the like spread over the network.

- UKTV, while half owned by BBC, operates as an independent company. As such, the license fee doesn't go to UKTV in any way at all.

- '25% of Virgin viewers' is an amazingly incorrect data interpretation - and believe me, as data analysis is kinda my job! I'm assuming this comes from the numerous press releases that have flown back and forth, in which cas the quote in question is 'UKTV accounts for more than a quarter of all viewing to pay entertainment channels in Virgin's basic pay TV package'. This isn't the same a quarter of viewers, at all.

In the simplest terms, imagine a group of one hundred people. Let's say each of them watches TV each day for four hours, and one of those hours is spent watching a UKTV channel.

Total viewing across the one hundred people: 400 hours.
Total time viewing UKTV channels: 100 hours
Total proportion of time viewing UKTV channels: 25% (100/400)
Total number of people viewing UKTV channels: 100% (100/100)

So in that example, all the viewers are viewing UKTV shows, for the stated 'quarter of all viewing' time.

I'm not saying that everyone watches UKTV channels - that's just an example to prove the maths. I'm saying that we don't have that information, as 25% of time watched (which is what's being stated) isn't 25% of Virgin's customers. They're different things.

- Even if it WAS just 25% of Virgin Media's customers (which it isn't), then that's one million people who now aren't happy out of the stated four million customers. You'd be hard pressed to find any channel outside of Sky One that has over 50% of Virgin customers watching it regularly... so if we apply the same logic, every channel isn't watched by more than half the viewers, so every channel shouldn't be worried about.

Which is why this is a very dangerous game that VM are playing. The most watched channels are all available FTA. Actually encouraging customers to go onto Freeview to regain some of the withdrawn UKTV channels seems like commercial madness to me.

But the free UKTV channels were on Virgin before all this erupted, Richard. I don't think that is what will drive people away from VM. It's the loss of the pay tv UKTV channels that will do that. But I have to say that there is very little on these channels that causes me to be concerned about their departure. Admittedly, I had set up 'Harrow' to record, but I am confident that this programme will pop up elsewhere before long!

I too rang to explain that I would have to pay £7.99 a month to regain these channels and ask that this be reimbursed. The rubbish that I was initially told is followed by my answer:

"But you don't watch the UKTV channels sir". Yes I do, I record everything if that makes a difference to your records.

"But it's not in your top five channels". So what, most people, myself included, mostly watch the PSB channels".

"We have listened to customer feedback and replaced these channels". Nonsense, it's all about a carriage fee dispute.

"You can regain the UKTV channels for free by downloading their app". Yes, but this does not cover the pay channels that I watch such as GOLD and Watch.

Repeated four times until it sank in with him.

"We have replaced these channels, including Premier Sports which is normally £21 a month". I don't like sport and, in any case, Premier Sports was off air for most of this afternoon and this is only for 8 weeks. The other channels are either available FTA or I have no interest in them (I also don't think that Premier Sports costs that much either).

"You are already receiving a substantial discount". So what, what has been negotiated in the past isn't relevant to this change of service.

"There is nothing we can do". Ok, I'd like to cancel all services on the basis that you are in breach of contract.

"We have not broken our contract as we have replaced the channels". I disagree, I regard this as a material and significant change in the service agreed upon under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

" So, if we add an extra channel are we in breach of contract if we add an extra channel?". No, but removing and/or replacing channels is another matter entirely. Please cancel all services.

" You need to give 30 days notice by calling cancellations tomorrow. There will be an early disconnection fee of £240". No there won't, If you try to impose this I will challenge it in court, particularly as there have been claims that other customers have been allowed to leave penalty free.

"I can give you £3 a month off". That still leaves me £4.99 worse off a month, as well as the added inconvenience.

"That is the best I can do for you. I can apply the credit and you will still be able to cancel tomorrow when they are open if you wish". So you're happy to let a domestic and commercial customer of 18 years leave over this?

We're not happy no, but there is nothing further that we can do.

So, i've got a partial refund and will now have to consider my options. This situation even made if onto the BBC evening news!

In my view UKTV has lost it way in the Digital World - they have launch too much channels.

Back in 1997 UKTV Network was:

-UK Gold - Launch November 1992 (Now called GOLD)
-UK Arena - Launch November 1997 (Now called Alibi)
-UK Style - Launch November 1997 (Now called Home)
-UK Horizons - Launch November 1997 (Now called Yesterday)

Wow claiming to know what you watch. Claiming lies over the removal of channel, claiming you would have to pay a early termination fee and £3 discount. Discounts are minimal, have the worked out it might be cheaper to meet them somewhere in the middle

Virgin Media and Sky do it.

For viewing figures I mean how do they know over 20m watching England playing in the world cup and how many watch the royal wedding if they did not know? But saying that why do someone in CS need to know that we do not know.

Why are you watch Babenation?

But to make individual customer claims it’s not something customer relations would know but yes there are people who would know, not watching it yet too many clothes

I ask because it is feared that Sky could take full advantage of the UKTV issue as outlined in post #210 of this thread:

This is how UK viewing figures are worked out.

https://www.barb.co.uk/about-us/how-we-do-what-we-do/

There is a panel of 5,100 homes around the UK that are monitored and they work out a percentage of them and work it out then based on the total population.

Amidst all of the changes I think VM has accidentally put a few of the channels in the wrong packs. Some channels have changed packs, such as Lifetime, Turbo and True Entertainment but there are at least two I think have had the incorrect flags applied to.

The latest Channel Guide confirms that HISTORY (including in HD & the +1) and C+I (including HD & the +1) should only be available to Full House customers.

However, on the V6 box customers on lower packs are currently able to watch HISTORY HD (but not SD & +1), and on Virgin TV Go they can watch C+I too.

I wonder how long it will be until they notice!

Well, we know that in your world, Den, everything stays the same.

Except that when you look back, you find that it has indeed changed. Like Virgin getting BT Sport UHD, which was never going to happen, of course. Strange, that. Are you living in a Tardis? :D

Yes, my vision ahead is clear, but there's no changing going on here, even when the wind does blow from a different direction. :)

Think as far as tv goes Virgin has to pull something big out the hat soon for existing customers. Quite a few people today talking about the loss of the UKTV channels and having no prior warning. Not best pleased. Also a couple of people saying they were given £50 credit when they complained. Really don't want to go back to sky but it does seem a more viable option by a distance for tv

Unless you are really desperate to have these tired old channels back, it might be worth waiting to see what other channels are coming this autumn. However, if you can't wait, there are other options available. You just need to take them.

Actually won't miss those channels as I rarely watched any of them, but was pointing out a couple of people in work weren't too chuffed and this just seems to reinforce the idea that Sky is superior for tv.

This is a like a bad joke. Premier Sport has spent as much of the last couple of days frozen as watchable.

You are quickly becoming a laughing stock VM. The recent days have become as much of a PR disaster that could be possible. I am embarrassed for them.

If the whole mess with UKTV and shoddy service like the Premier Sport hiccups continue much longer it may take some time to recover from the damage caused.

The sample households are taken across all TV providers and will also include the number of people in the home, watching whatever it is at that particular time.

Its been worked out that way by BARB since 1981

Think about it. If you toss a coin 1000 times, you're going to get about 500 heads and 500 tails. Do it a million or a billion or a trillion times, and the result isn't going to be much different. You'll just be more tired.

Yes, but polling is much more intricate than that. It may be a 'random' sample, but the last election showed that these random samples were not properly identified in the first place. More emphasis on types of constituency from which the opinions were taken would have yielded a more accurate result.

Anyway, Virgin must have a pretty good idea as to how many people acfually watch these channels on their boxes, and I think that will be what would have convinced them to pull out of the existing arrangements with UKTV. It does sound like it was a pretty poor deal.

All VM are asking for is the same rights to box sets that Netflix and Amazon have, and the same ability to air their free channels without charge as other platforms do. Sounds reasonable to me. UKTV and the BBC need to have some serious discussions, or the former will lose a huge amount of money.
