Is this - or something very like it - what the new Virgin Media TiVo will be like? Two TB and TWELVE tuners!!!

Interesting, and we Virgin customers are being left behind once more, with the clunky TiVo.......:(

I've had TIVO for a few years, and whilst I love the concept the product is flawed, several updates later, and two replacement boxes, it's laggy and very slow.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2015) Vol. 2

It seems the critics are massing but the vast majority are still very happy with their TiVo boxes and sales are increasing year on year so they must be doing something right although a small minority are obviously not very happy with it.

I've been a very vocal "supporter" (hate that word in this context) of the Tivo box since 2011 and I love the features but I'm not a sheep. Both my boxes have degraded in the past year and if VM think doing nothing is doing the right thing then they'll find their TV business will deteriorate.

My reasons are driven by some other issues that I'm not permitted to discuss as they are covered by an NDA but they have pretty much convinced me that the TiVO development is a little out of control and I have lost confidence in the product somewhat.

My interpretation of that statement is that you are involved in the testing of the next Tivo generation and are not impressed, especially now you have seen the Sky announcement.

If that is the case, it is a little concerning.

However, given that I use Tivo just as a Freeview PVR, and use streaming services, it's not an issue for me personally.

http://www.gizmodo.co.uk/2015/11/sky...um-tv-service/

First up, there’s the new, main Sky Q Silver set-top box. It supports 4K video and has a 2TB hard disk as standard. 12 tuners allow for the recording of four shows simultaneously without interrupting what you’re watching live, while advanced Wi-Fi keeps streams and downloads speedy.

It does look nice, I have to admit, but I won't change back to SKY haha

Let's just say out of Sky and Virgin Media only one has a release date (vague as it is) for their new solution.

I also stream more content now than ever, it is the way forward, for me personally, Although not using Netflix on TIVO, the launch time for the app is terrible. Why is it so slow?

For the first time, i am considering dropping the TV package all together, and going with Freeview, with the option to stream with NOW TV, Netflix, etc.

I can't help feeling the VM are slipping behind in TV content.

No I don't Den, sorry, but going by the number of ppl on here who have said that they aren't very impressed with the TiVo, in comments made on these forums over the past year or so, gives the impression it's probably quite high overall.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2015) Vol. 2

I've made my mind up, I'm dropping Tivo and the phone line.
I was one of the first to get Tivo, always sang its praises, but now it's so slow and clunky.
Tonight instead of recording Four in a Bed on 4hd, (series linked) it recorded half of ITV HD's The Chase, even though MY Shows and the Info Banner say Four in a Bed, I think Tivo is tired, haha!

The channels I record are on Freeview and NowTV, so after Christmas it's all going.
The loss of DD5.1 via optical was the begining of the end, the new price rise is the last straw. No matter whats coming soon, Virgin have lost me as a TV customer. Over the years I got 10 friends and family to sign up, with only one as a refer a friend offer, most of them don't know about the increase but the ones that do are ditching the TV.

I've recently ended 2 Virgin Mobile contracts too, as no 4G, the silly Freestyle tariffs and the loss of £5 discount for other Virgin services make the network seem stale.

Tivo has never become what VirginMedia, (and me) wanted it to be.

I live with my parents and they've been with VM for nearly 25 years. Because of VM's recent antics, I have been longing for the day for them to switch to Sky. Better content for a considerably lower price.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2015) Vol. 2

I have been a happy customer of VM for a good few years. However, I'm now seriously thinking of moving some or all of the services to other platforms.
TiVo. Is it me or is it getting slower and slower. The EPG can't handle anything other than what was planned 2 weeks prior, any changes and it records what it wants.
Recordings randomly get deleted. No chance of 4k or more tuners etc etc
Internet. You can give me a 500mb line, but the bandwidth is so abysmal its like having a formula 1 car and only being able to drive it in rush hour traffic.
The WiFi is the worst I have ever encountered. It's so off and on I think it is secretly transmitting in Morse code.
Phone line. It's OK, but I'm now sure there is someone paid to unwrap a sweet wrapper when I try to use it!!!

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2015) Vol. 2

As Denphone often intimates, the grass isn't always greener on the other side. Each service has its pros and cons. Now, I'm part-way into a BT TV contract, I miss my freeview and freesat days - I think we take it for granted how good our free-to-view offerings are in this country.

If I could get out of my contract, I'd switch to a free-to-view offering and spend the saved money on Netflix and Amazon Instant Video. I think on-demand programming is the future - watching programs when you're ready to, instead of when the schedules dictate. And some of the Amazon or Netflix exclusives are very good indeed :)

BAH Humbug lol

Technically it says "Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2015) Vol. 2", it doesn't mention channels.

As TiVo is part of Virgin TV, it should be ok to discuss rival products and compare it to what VM may bring out....(not meant to sound rude in any way)

I think it was me who started going off topic...sorry Stephen, I will stick to the topic from now on.

Interesting. The original European arm of CMT (which Telewest carried) closed about 15 years ago, due to lack of advertising and therefore large debts.

I remember watching the last video shown before it went off air, though I can't remember what it was.

They played a lot from the early to mid 90s which was a golden period for female New Country artists. And the Alt Country was quite rock guitar based. In fact quite a bit of their output bordered on Adult Orientated Rock, but it still couldn't find a large enough UK audience.

The earlier post was wrong and The Daly Telegraph correctly only mentioned BT. VM has a deal with Sky for all its sports channels so nothing is changing here. It is just BT that may have issues but even then Ofcom has said that it may intervene if the two parties cannot come to a sensible arrangement.

That's a harsh and unjust allegation, mate. Read the Telegraph article and their decision makes perfect sense. I put the blame for high sports prices at the door of the Premier League. They could sell all their matches to both Sky and BT but prefer to take higher payments for exclusive deals.

Correct me if I'm wrong but hasn't Sky got commercial agreements for it's sports channels with Talk Talk and VM ?

Nobody seems to mention that Talk Talk and Sky don't have wholesale access to BT Sport , funny that isn't it being that they both use the Openreach network for broadband. The only wholesale deal in place for BT Sport is with VM who of course don't use the Openreach network.

BT will simply try to outbid SKY on the next bidding round i fear and it will be the consumer who ends up paying for it all in the long run, it's a pity sky, vm and bt can't all just work together and create 3 great platforms with great choice.

I don't think that it will just affect BT, but ALL of Sky's competitors. It's good news for VM that they currently have a contract in place to shield them from this change for a time.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2015) Vol. 2

...talking of BT, rumours abound in the shareholder world that BT is to make a bid to take over ITV.

If this goes through, in theory at least, BT could take off some or all of the ITV portfolio from the Sky EPG. This would give them an extra bargaining tool with Sky Re: Sky Sports.

It is claimed that one of the reasons for the takeover bid will be to allow BT to get their hands on the lucrative ITV Freeview slots.

The BT/ITV tie-up was suggested by CCS Insight who publish a list of predictions that are reported by the FT and others. They said "by 2018" so that gives BT a bit of time!
Their other predictions are off-topic and include the EC mandating a a minimum broadband speed of 30 Mbps by 2020 and Google launching a mobile service in a leading European market by 2017.

As their was only one test with all the channels named, I wonder if these channels will be IPTV, but have their own EPG numbers?

I also wonder if BBC3 will remain on the EPG, but link to the VOD programmes via something like the red button.

AFAIK BBC3 will close sometime in January 2016 and show trailers for the VOD offerings for two months.

If you get any concerts with US country artists over here they sell out in minutes. Its the music industry over here that thinks we don't like it, & it seems tries to discourage promotion of country. If they quit trying to mess with it ( & we know they do) & let it stand on its own merits we might get somewhere.

You could make your own playlists on Youtube, or just use a music service such as Spotify. Both are available via Tivo. Amazon Prime has a lot of music with many pre curated play lists. It all depends how important pictures are to you.

I haven't watched a music channel for years; the adds drive me crazy.
