Very worrying isn't it. I thought VM would start spending money now it supposedly had deeper pockets. It's scrimping more, not investing in new channels, bills are going up and their catchphrase is "on netflix for only 5.99!!!"

How is it scrimping dear chap as it paid a lot out for BT Sports to go onto the XL pack and that's something Sky certainly ain't going to do.

very good point Den much better having BT sports in XL than a pay extra channel

To be honest Dave I have BT included with my BB and quite frankly hardly watch it , I certainly wouldn't pay to subscribe.

No, I haven't noticed that at all.

Channels added since the takeover:
BBC 3 HD
BBC 4 HD
BBC News HD
BTSport1
BTSport1HD
BTSport2
BTSport2HD
CBBC HD
CBeebiesHD
Food Network
FOX+
GINX
horror +1
Lamhe
London Live
More 4 HD
MTV HD
MTV MUSIC
Nick HD
Notts TV
Premier Sport
Reality +1
STV Glasgow
Travel Channel

I make that one premium channel (which was free for months), plus BT Sports if you don't take XL

How is:
1. Launching all the above channels
2. Buying Smallworld
3. Buying 50% of All3Media (Skins, Hollyoaks, Towie, Undercover Boss)
4. Upgrading network to 150 Mb
5. Being Official Partner of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow
Scrimping?

I can't see it myself, and I'm not pretending VM is perfect.

VM lost content leadership of the on-demand content market when it was independent. LGI needs to regain the lead in this area.

Personally l would like a six tuner TiVo and a bigger memory as we have to pick and choose what we can record many times over.

the box with 17 tuners is no good if it has no content to show on it :)

With such a big overhaul of the Tivo, it would make sense for VM to think about 4K capabilities too.

No point in increasing capacity and then having to do it again for 4K.
They may already have this in mind ;)

I agree den but ESPN has been in XL for free for many years now and our bills have been going up. It's still a great deal and we are very lucky but bills keep going up.

Indeed bills have been going up for a while in this market.

Did VM's new package reduce costs for some people on this forum?
Downward price pressure could occur if Sky provides free broadband with Sky Sports as rumoured here (includes what looks like an unreleased advert so may just be a concept at this stage.)

i agree it is the status quo at the moment but i'm now feeling i'm not getting value for money. VM put bills up but we got BT sport, we got HD channels, we got additional channels and i thought "well this all adds up and makes sense". now the bills keep going up and i feel like im not getting anything for it. Give me 3 channels and put my bill up by a fiver i dont feel so annoyed. i'm quite happy in fact. put my bill up by four quid and then offer me netflix for 6 quid i'm thinking

unless you've signed a new contract which has put up channel costs by 3 or 4 quid every customer/ unless your overheads have gone up MASSIVELY above inflation then you are therefore just milking me dry of money during tough economic times and providing me with sod all in return for the increase.

i am a newcastle united support and mike cashley loves to milk the fans of money by selling players and replacing them with free signings/upping ticket prices etc. if the new VM owners are like this as well it'll peeve me right off.... its not like i can go to sky and murdochs or BT and ...their incompet ence.

sorry for the rant its a monday...

Was Sky Sports F1 SD Channel 'exclusive to sky' before deal being done for Smallworld and then Virgin Media?

For all we know maybe Virgin are looking into Sky Sports 5 SD Channel right now.

denphone 09-06-2014 14:48

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2014) Vol. 2

l would say that's inconclusive as it says its exclusive to Sky Sports customers and that could easily include Virgins Sky Sports customers as well.

I was lucky, then - saved £8 per month, and BB speed increased from 60 to 152Mb/s (160, actually).

i was about to ask this question myself den! i have XL tv, L phone and XL broadband i was hunting about whether i should just get VIP at this rate but realised it probably doesnt exist anymore and wondered if it it was one of those stupid named packages now...so seems nothing has in essence changed.

the new names are appalling btw no idea who thought those up. i didnt find them funny just embarrasing really...

Yes, although most do not take into account the cost of an extra box. For example I have a TiVo downstairs, and V+ upstairs, which matches the Premiere collection, but nothing similar on the new bundles.

By asking about the big what ever it is I reduced my cost by £5 per month - only have 50meg instead of the 100 or what ever it offered but it only would have saved me 50p per month. This was by going to retentions ;)not sales

For me, the advert reads that the free BB deal is exclusive to SS customers once SS 5 is launched. It suggests to me that Sky want to keep as many customer subs as possible after they lose CL football.

Buy BT broadband, get free sport. Buy Sky Sports, get free broadband. Seems a sensible response from Sky.

Really depends where you are as it is ADSL so nowhere near VM speeds. But Sky normally charge their TV customers £7.50pm for it so quite a saving if true. A comparable fibre offer would be £12.50pm. Realistically, Sky might charge a bit more say £15pm, I speculate.

£20p/m plus £15 line rental for Skys 38mb service mate, it's what i got quoted anyway lol, but £7.50p/m for 6 months. The 76mbs is £30p/m plus £15 line rental.

I think Andrews meaning if there's to be a fibre offer like the standard broadband one when took with Sky Sports , post 1541 clearly states there will be some kind of deal however I'm sure it won't be free like standard BB.

Spot on, so to clarify, Sky's broadband pricing could look like:
With Sky TV. ADSL £7.50pm
With Sky Sports ADSL free

With Sky TV fibre upto 38Mb £20pm
With Sky Sports fibre upto 38Mb £15pm

Sky's upto 76Mb fibre standard pricing of £30pm does look expensive compared to Plusnet which offers it at £20pm and VM's upto 100Mb offering of £20.50 + 50p more line rental.

(Sky has already recouped a small amount of the potential free ADSL broadband costs by withdrawing discounted annual line rental.)

It's slightly odd that this announcment doesn't mention it being an HD service. I'm assuming it will be but it's strange that SKY aren't making any mention of it.

Here goes until August. Sky Sports 5 becomes the new Atlantic/BT Sports/Sky Sports HD. Will we or won't we? Inside sources saying yes and no. Lots of late nights on the day that it is supposed to launch. Remember, though, outside of the top 3, dutch football is like League 2 on a bad day. For the past few seasons they have been giving away the rights so not sure why Sky are making such a big play on obtaining them...........

Just Virgin will need to move some channels numbers to make room for Sky Sports 5.

MB HQ thinks Sky Sports News may move to after Sky Sports F1 on the EPG.

i can already see this conversation

me: "why are you putting up all the sport prices??"
sky: "We have more sport than ever on more channels than ever!!"
me: "But youve lost the champions league rights?"
sky: "We have champions league matches more games than ever next year!"
me: "but from 2015 you dont so why are the prices going up?"
sky: "We have more matches than ever on more channels than ever!"
me: "youre ignoring my point are you?"
sky: "we have more matches than ever on more channels than ever!"

A slight edit on what I said. The games are over 3 days not 4. Doesn't alter the amount they'll show though.

Aye they're saying European football but sky only have the rights to la liga haven't they? Maybe they should change the description from a "channel showcasing European football" to "a channel showcasing la liga only..."

Unless MB is aware of sky sports about to capture bundesliga, French ligue, serie A? I thought BT sport had just recently won these rights tho

I am hearing that BT are showing football from Spain from August 2015.

I'm assuming that the launch of Sky Sports 5 was the reason for no launch date being advised. We should have guessed something was afoot even before the leaks! Next time...

Base on info I have seen the missing Sky Sports are set to launch in July. With Sky Sports 5 to follow on August 12th.

I was told to 'Enjoy the world cup'.;)
