I'm suspecting it'll be free on all packages during the RWC then it will be a standalone subscription service.

After the grief VM got over the Setanta debacle, i'm talking about the 'unable to cancel' farce and VM CS getting the brunt from disgruntled subscribers, i'd be surprised if they allowed someone else on their platform who controlled the subscriptions.

Doesn't Premier have one of the guys behind it who was involved with Setanta?

Not probing but...

If it hasn't been posted online then it can't be Sky/Premier Sport/Fox + channels then.

Not asking, just thinking out loud.

Actually, Sky channels hasn't technically been posted, nothing has been confirmed on any of them so I guess it could be. Premier Sports and Fox+ are out the question for the DNP

Very interesting indeed.

Noticed the guy, James Gordon, who has tweeted is the managing director of Sportbox Media. Why would this be of interest I hear you ask. Well Sportbox Media appear to be in charge of selling advertising on Premier Sports during the rugby world cup!

Sportbox Media have put feelers out on their Twitter feed:

"Want to advertise your company during television coverage of @RLWC2013 on Premier Sports? Contact us for details."

So I'm pretty sure James Gordon will have a good idea of what is happening behind the scenes, and will be desperate for confirmation that the channel will be on Virgin Media real soon. More potential viewers will make it easier for him to sell advertising slots. I think Premier Sports being free on Virgin Media during the Rugby World Cup is a very real possibility.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 5.

So we think Premier Sports is coming to VM. If its a standalone subscription i cant see many signing up. Is it £9.99 pm on Sky for ONE SD channel? doesnt represent good value to me.

Netflix is coming but again the feeling is this will be subscription based- £5.99 pm we assume. This is the same price as Netflix on other platforms - i have Netflix available on my Roku and my Blu-Ray but have never tried it as i am put off by the price. Again i wonder how many VM subscribers will pay for this service and how many NEW subscribers Netflix will attract ?

To me it would be far more sense to have a deal to include them in a higher pack like XL. the channels would have more viewers, the channels get greater revenue and VM increase the value of its top tier packages and get better subscriptions.

Now dont get me wrong - i dont expect everything at no extra cost but if these services were added to XL for example- also add the other channels rumoured to be coming soon:

Sky1 +1
Sky Atlantic
Sky Atlantic +1
Sky Atlantic HD
Sky News HD
Sky Sports F1 HD
Sky Sports 3 HD
Sky Sports 4 HD
Sky Sports News HD

Channel 4 +1 HD

Disney Channel HD
Disney XD HD

FOX +

MGM HD

Sony Movie Channel

News 18

Universal Channel HD

Then if VM increased the price of XL by say i dont know £5pm for many it would still represent good value - i think it would. And VM may find more people 'trade up' to XL in turn increasing their revenue and therefore making the deal for Netflix/Premier Sports etc better.

I agree it would give Virgins XL pack better value having them included, however if they increase it by £5 I can see Sky running an advert with the following headline;

Sky's Top Package is £5 cheaper than the equivalent package on Virgin Media

Yes a few will know that it includes these things but most people will go "oh £5, I'll switch as that's £60 a year"

Premier Sports to be added tonight, going live on Friday on Channel 551. Going into XL but free for everyone until 6am on the 25th of November.

i take on board what you are saying and agree. A lot of people would just look at the 'headline'. But VM could simply do their own promotional and state they are cheaper than Sky as they would have BT/ESPN sports HD/ Netflix and Premier Sports included at substantial saving.

i just think this would be a win win. i think the likes of Netflix and Premier Sports would get more £ as a % of XL subscriptions compared to being standalone subscriptions , VM potentially attract more subscriptions to its top tier pack even at a higher price and VM customers feel theyre getting better value.

"Just spotted this Tweet: XL TV package with Virgin Media it is on Channel 551 and will turn on on 25th October until 6am 25th November"

Could be accurate, could be inaccurate. That's why I run it past the trusted crew here to see if it made any sense.

Seeing plenty on Twitter and Facebook to suggest it's going to be free for Virgin viewers. I don't know if that just means free for the first month for everyone, or free to XL and VIP customers.

I'm getting my pop corn ready. This is great viewing for me. Twists and turns. I'm off work sick at the moment and not allowed in as I have a contagious stomach virus so this is good top excitement to my otherwise dull evenings in between toilet visits.

I wonder then MB would be able to talk about the DNP. Is it imminent is it far, far away.

Could be accurate, could be inaccurate. That's why I run it past the trusted crew here to see if it made any sense.

Seeing plenty on Twitter and Facebook to suggest it's going to be free for Virgin viewers. I don't know if that just means free for the first month for everyone, or free to XL and VIP customers.

from what i can find out bud is that its launching friday and staff are only being briefed tomorrow on charges or no charges,it appears someone as leaked info early;)

After the bashing Virgin have taken on Facebook, Twitter and rugby forums offering Premier Sports for free, for the first month, would be a great PR exercise. Virgin Media would suddenly become the darling of rugby fans.

Still beavering away to see if I can get further info about the supposed "free period" on Virgin.

If they add another Premium sports package to XL FOC for the long term, I will probably complain to VM. I was fine with BT sports being added FOC, but another Premium one?... that would be taking the 'P' out of non sports fans IMHO.

It wouldn't make sense to end the freebie before the RL is over unless the last few games are on BBC?

I like this tweet though :)

Okay, an interesting picture is building.

So taking everything into consideration, over the past few pages of posts, it sounds like:

1. Premier Sports will be added to the EPG tonight / tomorrow night on channel 551
2. Premier Sports will start broadcasting on Friday
3. Premier Sports will be free to all viewers until 6am on 25th November
4. Premier Sports will then remain free to XL customers thereafter

Anyone planning to watch the Barcelona v Real Madrid match on Sky Sports 2/HD this Saturday will miss the first 15 mins due to a UEFA ruling.

If this is true, this is fantastic news for me (and probably most other RL fans). It might prove difficult for PS to attract RL subscribers at this time of the year (the RL season runs from Feb to October) if they are going subscription.

All you have posted is just rumours.

At time of posting Media Boy HQ has not seen anything about Premier Sports (Just rumours).

All I have seen is 'an new channel will launch by end of this week' but base on that rumour posted on DS Forum last weekend it look like Premier Sports may launch.

What stupid person from UEFA thought this was a sensible rule. The reason behind it is so that it doesn't stop people going to the actual games, but I highly doubt missing the first 15 minutes will make people fly all the way to Barcelona and buy a ticket!

I wasn't told anything about the channel being unscrambled for the RWC.

If it does go into XL and/or the RWC will be made available to all subscribers, it looks like negotiations have gone better that what was hoped. For once, MP's have achieved something positive :D

Doesn't Premier have one of the guys behind it who was involved with Setanta?

One of the Directors of PS was also a Director of Setanta. This is nothing unusual in business and wouldn't influence any decision by VM on whether to carry PS or not.

I agree that VM won't ever allow any third party to control their own subscriptions, look at what happened with BT Sport! AIUI, channels such as Boxnation are bought wholesale by a subsidiary of VM (Virgin Media Entertainment Services) and then retailed directly to VM customers.

It's to prevent it impacting on regular football attendances during those times in all European federations and in particular lower league clubs.

Your going to complain about receiving something for free. ( wether you like it or not it's free)

Will you also be asking for compensation along with your complaint!

Nothing's free! The costs of BT Sport (and possibly PS) will be inbuilt into the costs of supplying XL and reflected in the price charged to customers.

However, I don't think that XL will rise due to the addition of BT Sport as these can be met by the savings from not having to pay for ESPN.

Premier Sports is another matter, if efficiency savings cannot be found elsewhere, I would expect any future price rise to reflect the additional cost of suplying PS. This is still a good deal for sports fans, but not so much for non sports fans (unless there is something in the pipeline to appease us).

Do you have inside information that Premier Sports are giving VM their channel free of charge then? Thought not.

Adding two Premium packages, retail value on other services being £15 plus £10 =£25 would be disproportionately favouring sports fans IMHO. The Premier Sports money should have been spent on better TV content.

As a paying customer I have the right to make my view known to VM senior management. And no, I have no intention of asking for compensation.

This is all speculation ATM as we don't know the terms of the PS deal.

Have to say that whilst I am pleased for those who want it to watch the Rugby, after that it should go premium as I doubt long term whether it would be watched enough by those in the XL pack to justify it. Certainly I wouldn't watch it, but that is because they don't carry any sport that I personally would be interested in watching. Well, I suppose I might watch the odd NASCAR event on there but that would be all.

feel slightly the same as the sport is more niche than BT sports but then again some might say that about Eurosport and that is included. I certainly not going to punch the gift horse but if we got SA in XL as well as PS would that balance it out for everyone?

My Idea would be to give PS for free for those who pay £7 for HD as this is currently not looking great value for those who just get it for Sport and miss out from Sky 4 channels

If it turns out that PS is free on XL (we still don't know whether that is the case), why couldn't they have used the money for PS to subsidise Netflix?

That way, Sports fans get a Premium addition and so do non sports fans. Going on retail pricing (as a rough guide), sports fans still are the biggest gainers, as BT sport is £15p/m and Netflix is £6p/m. And as Netflix appeals to both sports fans and non sports fans, but PS only appeals to sports fans, Netflix has a wider appeal than PS

Free Netflix would be a great USP; much greater in my view than free Premier Sports, and both sports and non sports fans would feel that they have been treated equally.

My Idea would be to give PS for free for those who pay £7 for HD as this is currently not looking great value for those who just get it for Sport and miss out from Sky 4 channels

No, because it is a Sky Basics channel. However, Netflix free on XL would be adequate compensation for non-sports viewers in my opinion.

That channel may launch when Virgin goes after HISTORY HD and CI HD.
