I am however really looking forward to the action from the States.

Hopefully when the transaction finishes with Liberty Global, the new CEO will slam down his iron fists with some juicy new deals!

After Sky treated me like they did 12 years ago, all personal and business contracts were allowed to expire following their refusal to make amends. This has resulted in a loss of business far outweighing the money they made by doing what they did. It now looks like they have finally realised this and have started sending me letter after letter urging (bordering on pleading) me to give them another chance. The last letter stated that Sky now has more on demand than VM, which confirms your suspicions.

I see where you're coming from, but the website may have been put there to try and stop people from leaving the VM platform if they thought that BT Sports would not be available. It may even ultimately be used to inform all those who signed up for it that BT Sports will not be coming to VM.

Having said that, I don't think that this will happen. This, however, is my opinion only, as BT Sport negotiations are said to be "extremely commercially sensitive" and measures have been put in place to "prevent unauthorised disclosure". I assumed this to mean that confidentiality agreements have been put in place etc.

This was discussed in this thread a few weeks ago. The general consenus was that VM had the rights to include the UKTV on demand material, but had chosen not to offer it.

The reasons put forward were that VM probably felt it pointless to pay for this inclusion, as most, if not all, of it was included anyway on the BBC iplayer.

Regarding +1 channels, the only reason why l was saying they are a waste of time, I spoke with CS and they said they dont have enough capacity on the network to take anymore channels, so bring the +1 channels on.

So, you are saying that CS told you that VM has no more space for any more channels (incorrect), so instead "bring on" +1 channels in this non existent space instead

Sometimes your posts make no sense at all.

I thought perhaps Virgin Media were moving channels to lower packages in preparation for new ones but it appears not. Still baffled why they gave me 3 channels and took away quite quickly though lol

Testing purposes?

Yes but it's on the first page of the thread and rarely changes on the updates. It would be easier to follow if it just listed changes from the original listing.

Why not just list the changes from last time and also a link to the full list?

Personally, because the vast majority of the post is repeated information, and sorting out what is new a bit of a hassle, I just skip to the next post. If only changes were listed, I would read it.

I wouldn't class these as minor channels. I would say that channels such as The Africa Channel, the recent asian additions, radio stations etc are examples of what is meant by the term "minor channels."

Unconfirmed:

Mmmm...

1) Virgin Media got new broadcasting deal signed with channels own by A+E Networks UK (A&E Television Networks/British Sky Broadcasting) and NGC-UK Partnership (National Geographic Society/Fox International Channels)?
2) Virgin Media has an glitch with them.
3) Some more channels numbers may move (From Channels 228 to 242).
4) If an new deal has been signed we may see the following channels coming online soon:

-Bio. +1
-CI HD
-CI +1
-HISTORY HD
-HISTORY +1
-Nat Wild HD

All info on this post is the list of channels we may get if Virgin has signed new deals with A+E Networks UK (A&E Television Networks/British Sky Broadcasting) and NGC-UK Partnership (National Geographic Society/Fox International Channels).

June
  • Zee Café is rumoured (via BizAsia) to be rebranded as Zee Classic on #811 sometime this month.
  • Liberty Global hope to close the transaction of Virgin Media by the end of June.

July
  • 31st ESPN (HD), ESPN America & ESPN Classic will close today.

August
  • 1st BT Sport 1 (HD), BT Sport 2 (HD) & ESPN (HD) may launch on Virgin Media today. (BT Sport are still in talks to launch on Virgin Media.)

That's pretty much what I suggested, a list of updates to the original list. Although I didn't actually specify a link to the original list, that's what I had in mind. It wouldn't make much sense to omit the link. :)

Hi all

Sorry I've not been on for (how it feels like) ages! Did anyone's Virgin Media services go blank on Wednesday morning. Basically, the whole Virgin network in my area of Ashton-under-Lyne suffered an interference Wednesday morning and my TiVo and broadband were down for two hours that morning. Did anyone else suffer a similar glitch?

This would be rather confusing! I always put a link to these various threads on both my Internet Explorer and Google Chrome favourite pages. It would be absolute trouble if a fresh thread was put on every week. Sorry, but I am against the decision:mad:! You are better off saving space and keep to putting fresh copies of these threads on every three months.

Spot on as MB has been doing a great job for years and my advice is if the Jonah's and Cassandra's don't like it then don't read it.

Confirmed: Zee to pull Zee Café from UK and Ireland on June 10th.

But the new name will not be Zee Classic but will be called Lamhe (Following info from BizAsia):

Quote:

A new channel from ZEE Network by the name of Lamhe will replace ZEE Cafe in June, BizAsia can exclusively confirm.

On Monday 10th June, ZEE Network will launch Lamhe – showcasing dramas from ZEE TV’s twenty-year old library, plus classic Bollywood movies and lifestyle, travel, cookery shows.

In a statement, ZEE said it was targeting UK viewers, which play on life’s simple and special moments, creating an emotional connect with the audience’s unique memories of their early UK life. The channel is aimed at people who simply love drama and want to watch critically-acclaimed shows and movies that have defined the landscape of South Asian television.

I checked a random AUL address (just off Stockport Road) and didn't find any faults listed for Wednesday, but it may have been a more localised fault.

That's the whole point; many people don't read it. Not because they don't value and appreciate the new information, but because finding that information within a mass of old information takes a lot of time.

You don't seem to understand that people are not criticizing MB; on the contrary, people greatly appreciate the information that he provides. They are offering constructive suggestions as to how that information could be presented and that would mean that more people read the new information that he has to offer.

I read every one of MB's posts apart from the long update list, because of the hassle of sorting out the wood from the trees.

Sorry Den, but to suggest that people commenting on presentation style is the same as criticising MB as a whole, is totally ridiculous.

At the bottom of his updates mb types a bit along the lines of "this update is to add such and such information". In addition, there is a ccolour ccoded key to enable quick identification of new info. Is that not already enough for people?

Does anyone know how often the TIVO listings are update, as they seem behind most of the time. They even list a program that isn't even on.

Remember Sky channels update to nearly two weeks ahead wherever many other channels will not update ahead to that type of period.

I understand what you are saying mate, but some channels say they are showing something, but TIVO listings have something else. A prime example of this was last night, ESPN showed Chelsea vs Man City, but TIVO's listings said they were showing NBA instead. VM should make sure the listings are always up to date.

I checked the EPG for the Chelsea v Man City match last night, drew a blank. Ended up setting the Tivo for tonight.

A somewhat confusing comment there.

Many of the regulars will probably skip through it anyway, they will already be aware of what is coming realistically soon and what is rumoured to be coming at some point, possibly, before the channel closes. I think the suggestions are mainly about making the list more useful to those who actually need it. At the moment there's a lot of detail in there that doesn't change from one update to the next, so many are left not being able to see the wood for the trees.

I always thought that you couldn't "record" BBC iPlayer content because of rights issues.

But it seems on Sky Anytime you "record" by downloading the content and it saves it to your planner.

Does anyone know if it automatically expires if you don't watch it within 7 days for eg. or does it stay on the planner for eternity?

If so, sounds like Virgin could do this.

On BBC iPlayer, you can download programmes to your iPad (other tablets are available), and keep it for seven days after you start watching it.

I know. Or 30 days from download.

I wouldn't mind knowing if it has a deadline on Sky once you've downloaded.

Seems a great system to me.

It's expires on the same expiry date as Virgin Media's On Demand iPlayer content.

I have found in the past that I can record BBC iPlayer content onto an external DVD recorder via Scart but not stuff from Sky Anytime. I don't have the recorder connected up anymore but remember being pleasantly surprised when it worked.

ahhh ok so not as good as I thought. Doesn't really make a deal of difference then does it?

Tho I have to say that given iplayer is integrated into the Sky interface, I think virgin should do that like it once was. The way you have to watch through that crappy app is rubbish. I swear bbc trust said they needed to do it that way so virgin didn't have unfair advantage, but sky do it through guide anyway.

Tho I have to say that given iplayer is integrated into the Sky interface, I think virgin should do that like it once was. The way you have to watch through that crappy app is rubbish. I swear bbc trust said they needed to do it that way so virgin didn't have unfair advantage, but sky do it through guide anyway.

iPlayer is still integrated, you can use the backwards EPG or the catch up menu, it just forwards you to the app.

We get the app cause it means the BBC can supply content direct to the boxes from their servers rather than delivering programmes to Virgin to put at each headend.

Sky's integration is just the same as Tivos apart from it downloads to their box instead of streams. Sky boxes just can't support the iPlayer interface the TiVo can.

But as I say, iPlayer is integrated it just has a different UI and streams via the Internet rather than standard On Demand

Exactly it's ****. Mainly because you get that awful circle appearing.

It's not integrated because you have to use the app to select HD etc... even if using backwards EPG.

Sky's is more integrated because it has the same interface.

But you don't have to use it, if I want to watch something on iPlayer, the only time I see it is when I am playing the programme.

It's the same app as on connected TVs, BluRays, Freesat boxes and I believe YouView. If you hate the app, take that up with the BBC iPlayer team, they are solely responsible for it.

BBC testing new HD Channel on Astra.

BBC are testing out an new HD Channel on Astra (Maybe the following will happen):

A) An HD Channel for the BBC Red Button.
B) BBC HD maybe about to relaunch for shows in HD on CBBC, Cbeebies, BBC Three and BBC Four.
C) BBC News HD may launch.

Rumours started by a516 (a516 think A will happen).

of course you have to ****ing use it!

And it's **** at playing the programme. It's so much better on through Virgin Media itself.

Fast forwarding etc.. is crap. you can only skip 1 minute at a time, and if you push it twice it skips about 10 minutes.

But crucially it's not the "same app" as on Sky is it

Yes, that will be for Wimbledon and Doctor Who in 3D.

They should keep it on and show other programmes in HD, but it can only be temporary surely? as the reason they gave for bbc2hd was cost.

There's no need to swear, ocav made a valid point.

You don't have to use it, you can record the programmes. You could also plug a laptop or pc into your telly and use the iplayer online.

I agree that the fast forward option is far from ideal, but this the app we have been given, whether we like it or not.

I personally don't care if the app is different to Sky. If you feel you are missing out on something special, you have the option to change suppliers, although VM may provide the better overall package for you currently.

As ocav rightly points out, you could always contact the BBC and tell them your frustrations with it. You are, of course welcome to air your views on this forum, but no-one will be able make the Iplayer any better.

It never defaults to HD, so even when you go back thru the EPG and select the programme you want to view, it still loads up the app to play it, you then still have to use the app to select HD etc, still have to use app to forward and rewind....

It would be more ideal if, where VM have it on their VOD servers for the V(HD) and V+ boxes it prefers that over the online version

**** me, how can you not swear when there's such idiotic behaviour on here.

Your comments make no sense. The whole point of "CATCH UP on demand" is that it is stuff that you haven't recorded.

The whole point of it being on the box is so you don't mess with a laptop or PC. That's just a nonsense suggestion.

As for telling me to go to the BBC to complain, what is the point of a discussion forum? As if I would make the BBC Trust change anything. The BBC as a whole is shoddily run.

Exactly, and setting to HD results in a second bout of "silver circle" (ok only for a few seconds but still).

Also a major flaw for me is the frame rate isn't up to scratch, so you get a jumpier picture. It's ok for drama but sport is a no go.

Now you're making me laugh.

You can't have HD and 3D broadcast on the same channel. You are aware of that?

My Youview box has an option in settings to select 'Play in High Definition' this results in the On Demand players immediately selecting HD where available which is a nice option.

Just to clarify, Muppetman, it's the stb which offers global settings, as opposed to the iplayer app itself?

That's irrelevant if the consequence of selecting that setting is to change the format that the iplayer app plays the content.

Yes it's built into the STB settings , Youview will automatically bring up the HD OD version if there is one.

Example go back a day in the EPG select say 'The Apprentice' and iplayer will open with the HD version selected.

There's 2 whole months to go before they struggle to reach a last minute deal. ;)

Bad day?

It's not irrelevant, it's the difference between whether or not only the BBC can do anything about it or the possibility that Virgin could manage it themselves with a stb software update.

Cheers - that's an excellent feature. As above, I wonder if there's any way a future TiVo update could provide Virgin users with this setting?
