Another £4 per month on top of the £7 already paying ? Are you mad ????? Sky would love you £11 for hd with vm and £10.25 with sky(And far more HD channels) on top of a dearer phone line.Bye bye VM in droves i think !!!!!!!!!!!!!!:erm:
VM should have thought about this when they started offering FREE HD and selling channels,They dug the hole now they have to figure a way out of it

Easy:

With VM we give you free HD but for those that want that little bit more we give you XLHD for xxx we will bring you the best in the latest HD channles. Because we believe in better.

On another note I was browsing the CBS Action channel website and wow that seems like a really good channel with some decent shows. I even have a Highlander wishlist and now realise i might be waiting quite sometime to see this show as CBS are broadcasting it.

A bit weird that VM have so many FTA station missing from their line up. I was really toying with getting a dish installed for FTA.

Understand what you are saying,But it would cost more and recieve less with vm.The price would be higher than sky`s,Why stay with VM ?

Believe in better (Wouldn't that be stealing a certain companies saying :D )

Satellite will always have more choice , and will also contain a wider choice of niche channels , granted there's some you'd never watch :D

My landlord won't let me put up a dish but i suspect that if I do it he wont care as loads of others have had them up for a number of years.

Plus there is nothing wrong with want a service you subscribe to be better, I love my Tivo and would find anything else a step back. Plus I already get to watch all the shows I want in HD even the ones that VM does not carry.

Virgin media might be trying to get More4HD when it launches. Just like what happened with Film4 HD.

Different people have different priorities/requirements/likes - what's so strange about that?

I understand that others may be willing to pay for extra HD - I am not.

btw, if I was using TiVo only for it's EPG, you would have a point - as I'm not, you haven't....:D

I consider the benefits and facilities outweigh a few bugs/features.

But I save money doing that.

I was paying nearly £10 per week for the Times and the Sunday Times (hard copy) - I now pay £8.80 per month for the iPad and online versions (I read the iPad version on the way to/from work, on the bus).

Result - saving money, more methods of access, less paper to recycle.;)

i would have thought it would be in ITV's best interest to give vm the hd channels a.s.a.p as they were supposed to having severe financial problems weren't they? virgin could have had them 1yr ago, the extra cash they have missed out in that time surely must be more harmful than making a deal for a lower price for a 3yr contract or something?

Sounds like the £10 charge is because they need to buy new equipment. Also quite surprised that a small-time cable company got ESPN America HD but states that Discovery HD is very expensive.

Discovery HD is very expensive and we have that and not ESPN America HD:confused:

l have never made it out to be a bad service as l am verry happy with a large part of Virgins service (Broadband/Phone and Tivo) but l believe that Virgin has stagnated on its TV service as we seem to have to wait a eternity for any new channels and their usual predictable and vague reply is we are still in talks but they have been saying that for years and people are fed up with the constant inactivety on this front and if they don't watch it their loss of 36,000 TV customers in their last quarter will become a avalanche.

They may have stagnated on the TV service or be trying to get the best for their customers. We all wait for thing as we all know in this country as we queue all the time for things:erm:

In regards to the 36,000 customers that they said were students, With the amount of them there were that is a drop in the ocean?

Quote:

Overall, some 481,854 students were given places to start in September, an increase of 5.5% on the year before, according to today's official figures from the university admissions service,

You seem to think the average person is obsessed with HD. They aren't. Many think they're getting HD anyway, just because they have an 'HD TV'. So they aren't worried about lack of HD channels, because they think they already have them!:)

But yet again, without proof, you seem to infer that the 36000 loss is due to lack of HD. Do you have access to VM's internal monitoring statistics?

denphone 05-09-2011 18:30

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2011) Vol. III.

Well we will see in the next 2 quarters whether these were students that left the TV service or Virgin just giving us a weak excuse for the loss of 36,000 customers.

21,200 TV customers in the last quarter. The losses were down to the end of student contracts, many of whom will return in September, and not chasing 'low rent' single or dual play customers. The TV loses were attributed to a fall in analogue cable and those with free TV M while digital pay tv subs (M+ upwards) all enjoyed growth.

Perhaps it's just me, but i don't think many with analogue cable or Free TV M are holding out for a smorgasbord of channels.

Well l would say with Sky having sold 3,5 million HD boxes plus Virgin selling 1,5 million boxes plus Freeview HD boxes l think that tells you a story and that is many people want their channels to be on HD and want to watch them.

And on the 36,000 TV customer losses l suspect that their failure to add HD channels in the last 9 months has contributed significantly to these figures and l see you have no plausible answer so far.

Facts are our friends - there were 36k net cable disconnections (which include either TV and/or broadband).....

VM Q2 results 2011

Page 1
Quote:

Net cable disconnections of 36,000 in Q2

90% of net disconnections were lower-value single or dual-play customers
ARPU of churning customers 16% lower than the average customer
If you look on page 18, you will find that VM have lost 21,000 TV customers in the last quarter, but are up 16,000 on the last year. And if you look on page 19, you will see that ARPU per customer is up and revenue is up by £16 million, showing that they (mainly) churned low-revenue/profit customers, which is good business.

From page 1
Quote:

Value and mix of customer base continues to improve
Half of new broadband customers taking 30Mb tier or higher, compared to 18% a year ago
taking 20Mb or above

Increased triple-play and quad-play penetration to 63.8% and 12.6% respectively

Continued growth in cable ARPU, up 3.2% to £47.35

Turnover is vanity, profit is sanity - it's pointless keeping customers who you don't make profit from; Capitalism 101....

Yes, but a lot of people get V+, Sky+Hd for PVR functionality. You can't gt a Sky+ box now and VM never produced an SD only PVR. And isn't the only PVR you can get on freesat, HD?

I agree sky have had success with HD. But that's never been in dispute. In fact, that's what I'm saying; HD enthusiasts are better served by Sky. Leave us who like HD, but aren't obsessed with it, on a service like Virgin, where you get a good amount of HD, but no charge

I have no plausible answer because I don't know the reason for the loss; you apparently do!

The no charge thing is a complete red herring. What do people want HD for in the main? Sport and Movies = £7 charge. Think most would be willing to pay the extra £3 to gain parity with sky. Obviously not most on here due to the village of the damned mentality.;)

I don't pay the 7 pound charge, as I do't have sports and movies, so for people like me, that argument doesn't hold water.

But I do like the HD channels we get for no extra charge.

And you know how these channels/packages are bought how?

In the 90s, the channel suppliers insisted on selling them in packs of channels in bandings (numbers of thousands of customers), and if that still the case today, VM (and customers who didn't want to pay for more HD) would have to subsidise those who do (as explained previously).
