Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)

I'll mull it over qas and get back to you, it shouldn't upset the settling in period should it?

Re: Router, Yes as you suspected I'm using the supplied router although I would like to change it at some point to a more configurable one but for now I will leave it alone as it's responding to pings ok.

I was a little concerned about the number of speed related complaints about Sky's new fibre offering but I believe that's just a glitch rather than a capacity issue, plus Sky are aware of it and working on a fix.

qasdfdsaq 29-05-2012 15:17

Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)

No, shouldn't affect anything, it's only an extra 4 packets per second (downloading a file at 40mbps is 3500 packets per second) so the load should be negligible.

Yeah I'm guessing it's a glitch (just like the 80/10 people on BT) but it's one of those odd ones where nobody will admit what the actual problem is.

Note that Sky use MER, so its hard(er) to use your own router, Openwrt/DDWRT/pfsense apparently support it (with some tweaking) but the majority of standard routers won't.

Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)

Again, not sure if this is a result of the upgrade work, but for the most part, i can now actually enjoy a game at some point after midnight.

I played Black Ops for the first time in a year and enjoyed a portion of it, although i was having little jumps of lag every now and then, which may or may not have been due to a rubbish host.

FIFA is still touch and go, but during the times of minimal jitter ive been able to actually play the game without wanting to post Anthrax to Virgin Media's headquarters.

That looks like a local network noise problem.

Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)

Anybody know what could be causing this? My connection has been poor since I was upgraded to 60Mb last month. I'm using the Superhub in Modem Mode with a Linksys E3200 Router. Are the spikes likely to be caused by the Linksys?

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/s...30-05-2012.png

Packet loss around 7am is due to a reboot. I haven't used the internet since setting up the monitor in order to try to establish a baseline (apart from a little bit of multiplayer Mario tennis at around 11pm).

Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)

Those spikes look like usage. Do you have anything connected to or plugged into the router? If so, unplug/disconnect it. Any device on your network could be virused up and doing that.

Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)

Possible timing errors aside (or the BT speedtester being off whack) this confirms Sky's service is in fact faster than BT Infinity, as Sky does not impose the 96.8% IP profile limiter that BT does.

So while BT 40mb "is really" up to 38(.72)mbps, Sky's 40mb "is really" up to 40.

Course the difference is a few percent either way, and there's the 80% slower upload to consider, but still interesting to know.

That'd also suggest the 80/20 service on Sky would actually run at 80mbps rather than BT's 77.43mbps.

I think I'm going to have to switch providers if it carries on like this...

I thought your issues were just down to spikes in utilisation.

Below is the latest graph, the large peaks are from speedtesting (last night for qas), and some light downloading on my games console.

I'll have a look at the quality of the unit when it arrives, if it's used then they may be re-distributing them, but since i was told they were "waiting for a delivery" then god knows... She never told me where she got it from this time, just that she "managed to get me one".

Bit of a long shot I know

heh I have stopped caring since BT announced my area for infinity, as long as this service remains useable I will be ok for 3 months until infinity is available. Also I have a need for the 20mbit upload it will bring as well now so looking forward to that also. If I feel like spending the cash tho I will keep VM as a backup and route it using windows so 2 connections to one pc again.

Got the Openreach data error preventing me from ordering fixed and placed my order this morning - speed estimate 60/20 on 300m line.

Well I dont really have any options and thankfully Virgin is actually OK for me at the moment. But it's quite funny that there are no plans to roll out infinity where I live actually think its a joke as its a quite densely populated area and there are much smaller exchanges that has a planned date or already have it enabled.

That said would be good to have options to get a good connection it is after all 2012 now ADSL1-2 are a joke these days...

Same.

They enabled an exchange in a town next to me that services 7,000 people... mine services 27,000... ridiculous.

Both same CPC, All i can come up with is they have a VMNG300, or different upstream.

different area of your area? bucklebs on the same channels as me but his monitor isn't as crazy as mine, same town.

He may also be on a VMNG300, that's the sort of flat lining of the avg latency i see now that i got my VMNG300 the other day, still, your average latency is pretty good compared to a lot of other people, infact, yours is quite far above a lot that ive seen.

You could try swapping upstreams, its possible the fluctuations in minimum latency are utilisation based.

It's been a bit crazy over the past couple of days, but as I wasn't at home I didn't notice :) there does seem to be something afoot in Crawley, and I'm hoping it's something good!

Upgraded from 60Mb to 100Mb on Monday and have seen no problems in usage at all, the connection as stable as it normall, apart from that TB fault the other day.

The VM network is very granular indeed at the local level. Any given set of channels only serves a couple of hundred or so homes which is rather fortunate as the total bandwidth available on 4down 1up is 200/18Mbps. As VM sell 100/10 unlimited on that it isn't hard to see that a single 100Mbps customer near to you going flat out can seriously spoil your day.

My 16Mb Sky connection the spikes are the usual Anytime+ downloads and general browsing speedtest etc. It is turning out to be the most stable internet connection I have ever had. Once Sky launch the rumoured low ping gaming trials later in the summer my minimum latency should drop. But as it is its fantastic for gaming.

Indeed, as long as its stable and your avg hugs it tighter than a baby's nappy, then 28ms baseline is nothing to be quibbed at

Yup and ping bbc.co.uk gives a lower ping then that monitor,

C:\Users\home>ping bbc.co.uk

Pinging bbc.co.uk [212.58.241.131] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 212.58.241.131: bytes=32 time=20ms TTL=246
Reply from 212.58.241.131: bytes=32 time=21ms TTL=246
Reply from 212.58.241.131: bytes=32 time=21ms TTL=246
Reply from 212.58.241.131: bytes=32 time=21ms TTL=246

Ping statistics for 212.58.241.131:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 20ms, Maximum = 21ms, Average = 21ms

C:\Users\home>

So I'm quite content.

Even better then :) Must just be routing thats giving you the higher min.

I so want an ADSL line for gaming, i can get a BT line put in for free saving me £130 quid, but i just cant justify the extra £20 a month ontop of my virgin connection.

I have noticed a MASSIVE improvement on xboxlive since moving to Sky but unfortunately right now they insist on having interleaved on. This increase's ping quite abit.

Apparently fast-path gaming lines could be trialed later this summer which could potentially cut my baseline/minimum ping in half maybe even more than half.I remember the old UKonline ADSL fastpath lines having crazy low pings.

Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)

My Ambit router stopped working last week and it was replaced with a superhub (VMDG480) but I cannot get the Think Broadband monitor to work - is there something I'm overlooking?

I've seen posts that say you need a separate router, not doing that just for the monitor as wireless is currently better that with the Linksys router we were using. Another post said to disable UPnP but that didn't work and a post on Virgin's Community forums said to uncheck respond to ping request (I thought it should be checked).

Have also set up a new monitor for change of IP address.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)

if your SH is in combo mode router and modem functioning then log in to your SH

192.168.100.1

advanced settings

DMZ

tick the respond to ping box

apply

-----------------

note: if you switch to modem mode and link your own router your IP will change. you'll have to update that on your thinkbroadband ping monitors settings

if your using your own router double check ping response if enabled on it.
