Do believe Sky will be asking way to high a price for Atlantic to be honest , however this doesn't explain the many other missing HD channels.

'Money bags' Sky have spent a fotune on the HBO stuff to lock other providers from showing the content. They've got low viewing figures and other providers aren't prepared to pay OTT caridge rights.

Maybe their policy has come back to bite them in the a**?

Yes, Neil should just pay what ever Sky say and charge VM customers more... good point. I'll pass it on.

We will get what channels they think we want when they think they have got the best deal for us customers ( as they are not like SKY and just throw money at the providers ). We are unable to blame VM for the channels that have been removed recently ( they have been from the provider on all platforms.
Can we all just get along as we all want the same thing and all this bickering is getting people down who come here to try and find things out.

I do not mind prices going up but we should be getting more for our money, Virgin have done nothing for quite a while, when Sky took those channels off in dec and jan Virgin should have added some more channels to replace them. instead they sat on their jack jones giving out vague press releases.

There is a lot going on. Adding just any channels as a knee jerk reaction to some complaints of "lost channels", which by the way the content will be found on other Sky channels, would be bad business practice.

New HD channels would be great but the channel I really want is Premier Sports. I'm not even looking for it to be included in the XL package either! I'll pay £6.99 p/m for this niche channel.

Perfect Choice 19-02-2011 17:06

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2011) Vol. I.

So I see the vast majority of new channels wanted are HD versions of those available on VM in SD. With the certain exception of Sky Sports 3 and 4 where the basics deal meant they will not be made available, I would not be too surprised to see most of the rest on VM in 12 months time.

New content though is much rarer to secure, Sky Atlantic is one right now with exclusive HBO content (e.g. Broadwalk Empire - not my sort of viewing but no doubt some people will like) and Premier Sports is another, I'll wait an see what VM do on those eventually.

With more HD channels this year, I will be well happy with the VM M/L/XL TV packing plus optional extras if you want them.

If you do want everything, that will always be Sky but I feel the gap will be closing and with greater OD demand content via Tivo Internet access say, VM should achieve a strategy of channel choice being less important and content choice being more relevant for the future.

Actually I make that around 26 a year (80 / 3 = 26.6666666) - which is even better ;) - esp as I don't think there are 80 HD channels available at the moment (though I could be wrong)

That's what I'll end up doing if it's not on Virgin in the next month. I have a Sky box and dish, willl subscribe to just that channel. Would prefer it on VM as it saves me plugging the sky box in every weekend (not got enough space to leave it on all the time)

I'd like to see Paint Dry and Paint Dry+1 on VM. Seriously I don't know what (SD) channels we haven't got that would improve the service that much. Of course a few HD channel launches would be nice but I personally don't have much of an issue with just watching the SD variants, it's still the same programme after all

About a year ago VM were well behind Sky and in serious danger of being made to look as if they were standing still, but over the last year VM have certainly had their foot on the accelerator with 28 HD channels being added, Tivo on the way and more HD channels to come.
Even Sky have had to admit that VM have raised their game recently, as regards missing channels on VM apart from Atlantic, which we will get sooner or later what are we really missing? Apart from a few HD variants I can't think of any...I mean how many channels can a person honestly watch, or maybe the question should be how many channels does any of us watch now on a regular basis? If I'm honest its a whole lot less than the 140 we already have.:)

GinxTV is a gaming channel, I think they announced that they would be launching on all platforms in november.

Any channel that is text heavy is greatly boosted with HD imo not to mention the actual sport.. & presenters :p:

ESPN America is on right now on channel 430 college basket ball native HD not Baseball right now though. Oh silly me I forgot I'm back on sky, you havent got it on VM have you.

I always do think ESPNA in HD looks a lot better than ESPN-HD.

You do a great job Media Boy but i have to say this thread hasnt exactly had much to report so far this year ... VM are certainly preoccupied with Tivo and upgrades to BB rather than improving the existing channel line up

hopefully once Tivo is official in April other things will follow on the TV side of things though my gut feeling is tivo will be the area of concentration and the apps rather than the actual channels

If I'm honest its a whole lot less than the 140 we already have.
This how I look at it Better being content and anything else coming along will be a bonus especially if I'm one of the happy 1,000 who get their Tivo box. I think virgin media a doing a good job.:)

I'd say Virgin have done a great job in the last 6 months. Since SKY Sports HD and SKY Movies HD launched on the 02nd August 2010 we've had the launch of:

Comedy Central HD
SKY One HD
NBC Universal On Demand
Catch-up with Demand Five
Cinémoi
ESPN Classic On Demand
Plus Five HD launched on the same day Virgin announced the sale of VMTV, which confirmed SKY Sports & Movies HD would be coming in August.

That is definitely not true of all digital channels. Plenty of channels fill their day time off peak with much higher quality repeats than the garbage Atlantic is pushing out. Some of the shows on that channel are pathetic for a pay tv channel as IMO Virgin 1 had better day time shows than Atlantic and that channel was Freeview.

Virgin need a big push this year , for TIVO to be a success VM need to add many more HD channels , more on demand , Sky sports red button , don't forget Sky won't stop at 50.

---------- Post added at 16:03 ---------- Previous post was at 15:54 ----------

HD channels top of the list to acquire should be

ESPNA HD to strengthen sport genre.
Nat Geo Wild HD at the moment to few Documentary HD channels
Universal HD good entertainment HD channel.
Nick HD and Disney XD HD currently no kids HD channels.
Sky Sports 3 and 4 HD needed at some point.
History HD another factual channel.

Seems reasonable but not at any price. I think a concentration on the non Sky HD channels and missing SD channels as the contracts come up. Do we know when the viacom deal is up as would be nice to have the missing MTV Channels. Also I am a bit of a fan of +1 channels so any more of them I'd welcome. I'm fairly happy overall though as we don't pay extra for HD unlike that other operator I can't bring myself to mention.

Technically you pay £50 for HD in the form of the HD Activation charge and if you have the sky premium HD channels thats another £7 a month.

So for one yea of the full HD line up with VM is £49.99 activation plus 12*£7 so £134 in total for 12 months. Sky is £10.25*12 months=£123 for a lot more HD channels.

Sky whoops VM for tv content but VM whoops sky for Broadband. I imagine it will be a lot cheaper for VM to bring its tv to be equal with sky than it will for sky to lay fibre to million of homes? Although i guess they will just resell bt fibre.

I have the XL TV package, and don't pay anything (including activation) for HD channels I have - there is always more than one option.

You are forgetting the subsequent years:

SKY- £10.25X12=£123

VIRGIN ( After 1 year ) £7x12=£84

So a nice difference of £39 and that makes a lot of difference. So the activation charge is payed for in roughley 15 months from when you first paid it eg £50 / 15 months = £10 every 3 months.

You're quite correct a difference of £3.25 a month but you do get 1 or 2 more HD channels. I wonder if VM get the missing HD content will they be able to keep giving hd free. Lets not forget VM also give ESPN free which is £12 a month on sky or £9 is you have Sky sports.

Nobody has mentioned VM give you ESPN free , it's 9.00 on Sky and that's only if you have Sky Sports if not it's 12.00.

Edit sorry Marcus125 hadn't read your post above LOL :-)

I don'thave Sky sports or movies. All my HD channels are free. I'd be paying an extra 20 pounds per month with Sky as I have 2 HD boxes.

Yes but what you are forgetting is that SKY jumped in with both feet as they thought that we will be able to show all the PL games one here. They seem to do the same for all the new channels.

VM held back and got the best deal for all of there top tier TV customers. VM may have looked at what ESPN had to offer at the time and said we will do this for you as you are a new provider in the UK.

Also lets not forget all the other HD channels that you have to pay for on SKY that are available for no extra monthly fee.

If we look back at the past 12 months instead of the last 6 you can add the following to the list too:

Eurosport HD
Discovery HD
Film4 HD
ITV HD
Sci Fi HD

The loss of Bravo, Virgin 1 etc was a bit of a bummer however what's been added in the past 12 months more than makes up for it. Things have went a little quiet recently however Virgin are rolling out Tivo and 100Mb broadband.

Virgin have promised more channels soon, and staff have confirmed this also. We just need to wait until the new financial year. Virgin will find it hard to top what they delivered in 2010, but I'm sure they'll give it a good try.

Now I'm sounding like a Virgin fan boy, which isn't the case, however people seem to forget what we've received in just 12 months and tend to focus on what we've lost or what we haven't got yet. Lets give them a chance, and see what treats they have in store. Alternatively send your channel suggestions too them directly via this link:

https://help2.virginmedia.com/assets...ackformCZ.html

and share their replies with the rest of us. Media Boy does a great job with this thread however it's more filler than "Coming Soon" information these days. Maybe if we all pester Virgin for the channels we want, we can all add great coming soon news instead of relying on Media Boy all the time.

I can confirmed that Virgin have failed to reply to my recent e-mails and feedback asking if Premier Sports will be coming soon. Either they are ignoring me, or a deal is close and they can't reveal. Previously Virgin simply replied to me stating there was no plans to add the channel. Maybe I'm blacklisted for being a pest.:D

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2011) Vol. I.

What you have said is absolutely correct.

You also mentioned to pester Virgin to carry the channels we want; as far as I know, that does help as Virgin will provide a channel if there is demand for it (as the deal will be more effective)

:)

Cinemoi?? You're havin a laugh so by process of elimination it would be the other two.

Two channels in months while losing how many? Adding on demand is not a new channel dontcha know

Blind loyalty my friend;)

Much better than my list Media Boy, BRAVO!

Totally forgot about BBC One HD and E4 HD. Have the past 12 months been the best in Virgins history in terms of new channels?
