Just checked around on the newsgroups for you but no joy I am afraid. I may have got the upgrade to-day but I still consider myself an honorary member of the club until we have all been upgraded. Together we stand and all that.:)

Stoke/Newcastle ST5 here. Baguley.
10MB upgrade complete.
Speedtests (not very reliable) 9658kbps
2 downloads (better) equal 970KB/s
:)

I remember Swansea being one of the very first to have upgrades back in the good ol' days (NTL). Now it seems that its going to be the very last.

Manchester was done days ago, rickyg01. If you've just got the upgrade in the last day or two, I wouldn't be surprised if you are served from a Baguley UBR. (Baguley area = Birkenhead, Macclesfield, Runcorn, Stoke, Warrington, Brombrough, Stretford, Wilmslow, Withington). Any of these areas close to you?

I got ithe upgrade today as well. I'm incredibly happy with the performance boost too, I've been getting speeds not too far off the theoretical maximum all day (even at peak hours). This is a typical result I've been getting all day:

https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2008/08/16.png

Plus I downloaded two large files simultaneously from gamerfiles and together they came in at bang on what you'd expect from the full 10MB speed....and that's a real world performance test, unlike speedtest.net which has many variables. I am a happy camper indeed...well worth the [seemingly never-ending] wait :)

I've just got the 10mb upgrade last night, but it just doesn't seem that much faster than 4mb, speed testing topping out at 5mb, and when I take a look at the modem configuration pages it says

Software Upgrade File Name : ntlhm120_ntl0004.cpr
Software Upgrade AdminStatus : allowProvisioningUpgrade
Software Upgrade OperStatus : failed

Is this some indication the the new firmware/speed has failed or is my modem on the way out?, which it could be as I've probably had it for over 9 years.

Call in and see about getting a new modem as that NTL120 will struggle with 10meg especially as it is 9 years old.

You actually don't need a modem upgrade.
We've looked at your current modem specification and it'll deliver the new speed perfectly.

Still waiting in Sheffield. In Telewest days it was one of the latter areas to be upgraded to broadband and their estimates were months out so not too hopeful of them making end of summer. As soon as it's upgraded I'll be able to ring up and get rid of this 7 year old motorola surfboard modem :).

There's some serious carbon footprinting involved in a lot of such recycling, it probably makes sense to just bin it. Not that this will be VM's reasoning, it's just convenient for them this way. :)

Mine is running great now, got my router set up again. it seemed to just come on by itself. I had to tinker a little bit so couldn't explain what i done to get it working. Tec bloke that come out to fit the modem didn't help much but he did offer to call round if i needed him. getting 9mb on the hard wired desktop and only 5-6 on the wireless laptop. My question is.. with the laptop being wireless, is that why it only gets 5-6mb. i use a USB dongle which came with my router, i read that usb can only reach certain speeds so would a pccard be better than the usb? In all honesty 5-6 is fine but i am just curious.

Like others here I waited in line for my 4 meg connection to be upgraded to 10 meg. When it happened, I had a cracking 9860 kb/s download for a week or so. Now I consistently get 1900 kb/s or thereabouts. The max downstream data rate in op config is 2048000 which looks like 2 meg to me? Shouldn't this be 10240000 after the upgrade? Thanks.

tools.virginmedia.com say im on the cable.ubr10.haye.blueyonder.co.uk and on the Where's my upgrade page Hayes has been Complete for some time now, but im still only getting 4MB download

Im on a SB4100 Modem but when i go to 192.168.100.1 i don’t have a operation config... i have Status, Signal, Addresses, Configuration, Logs, Help, but none of them tell me the Maximum Downstream or Maximum Upstream Data Rate

The VM website say the SB4100 Modem will be ok for the upgrade so i don’t know whats up, the only thing i can think of is the modem or the fact im half way from the Croydon, Mortlake, New Malden,Twickenham upgrade that is still TBC and Hayes upgrade that is Complete. Can anyone help, or let me know what’s going on. Should i phone VM and upgrade my modem or just keep waiting and rebooting my modem till i get 10MB?

Check the log file again on 192.168.100.1, it should be there

it should read for 4mb: SW Download INIT - Via Config file cm-4096-384

I'd also try switching the modem off.

Hi thanks for the reply, i looked in the log again but nothing in there with 4mb, but it did have "080229164933 6-Notice E102.0 SW Download INIT - Via Config file cm-4096-384"

Aren't there a few areas (like Glasgow) still to be completed?

Well I just joined and connected for the first time last night and I only get 4Mb. I have the Ambit 256 CM into my router and it all works fine but speedtest.net wasn't very good - uploads are below 300kbps. I am in SW London under Croyden area.

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

I am still waiting here too, and am not even getting my 4mb service anymore since this area has a "high TX load" or something...

MisterP 20-08-2008 13:47

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

I haven't been checking things lately. The last update on Virgin's "Even Faster" page was that Reading area was still "TBC".

This morning with the post I got a flyer advertising VM's M/L/XL services - 2MB/10MB/20MB - no 4MB listed!

(My main PC died onme last Thursday, so I've been going through the process of data recovery/transfer and reionstallation of programs, etc)

I did a Cable Forum Sp[eed Test on the replacement machine - 9.5MB!!! ;-)

I was beginning to think they'd forgotten about RG21 postcode

Yep, still waiting - along with several other TBCs, apparently.

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

Well if it's any consolation to those of you still waiting my upgrade has resulted in a fairly stable service. I am receiving a steady 9.5+Mb downstream and 470+Kb upstream...( well unless I hit the stm :( ) so maybe you will find it's worth the wait.

Keep checking back to this thread and if you do get your upgrade don't forget to let everyone know. Oh and feel free to have a moan if it helps, we know what it's like to wait in the dark. :D

I've had a steady 10MB for a couple of weeks here in Grimsby and it's worth the wait. You'll notice the difference when streaming videos (much faster) and downloading patches and files.

Apart from the first few days after the upgrade, when my connection was a bit spotty, I've been quietly impressed. Plus the upgrade was free. The only downside was Virgin announcing it in February, then only upgrading me in August (although some are still waiting). It's the waiting that was the worst part, but remember, once you've got it, you've got it.

In SW London too. Still nothing. In my modem log, it shows SW Download INIT - Via Config file cm-4096-384, then SW upgrade Failed after download - Incompatible SW file. Is this the modem rejecting the speed upgrade? Should I call Tech Support? Or am I clutching at straws....

TIA

I got the same thing more or less a few days back, don't know whether it means anything at all. I'm on the old Surfboard 3100

SW Download INIT - Via Config file cm-4096-384
Attempting Unit Update
Motorola CM certificate required
Missing CM Cert Upgrade TLVs.
CM Cert Upgrade Enabled. Initiate via SNMP
4-Error X501.28 Unit Update - Not updating. This image is not for this platform.
4-Error E107.0 SW Upgrade Failed after download - Incompatible SW file

Nah, it's just a firmware update for a different modem being sent to it. Means nothing.

That modem is rather old and tired, and not truly capable of keeping up with the faster speeds now available, they had 512kb when that was issued, ring Tech Support on the number below and get it swapped.

Motorola 3100
From October 2000 Customers could also use the Motorola 3100. It is Docsis only (so will not work reliably if at all, on the parts of the network that use Eurodocsis). The 3100 models was Ethernet only, and Motorola soon introduced a model with USB as well, the 4100 (see below).

The Motorola 3100 does not support 10 or 20Mbps Tiers of Service

Tech Support is open 24/7 on the numbers below.

For help with your TV or Phone and for Broadband Technical Support:

Call Product Support/Faults on 151 option 3 from your Virgin Media Phone. It's absolutely free.

Or call 0845 454 1111 from any other phone line.

Thanks for your concern. I am very aware that it won't support the higher speeds and was originally signed up for VIP but due to a mix up was put on XL + and was still promised a new modem. When it didn't turn up after the second time of ringing I just thought screw it and took them up on the offer of sorting everything out and on some weird hybrid package. If anyone else out there is in the same position and has an ancient modem dating back to (Jan 2001 in my case) try and get a new modem. I've been waiting for the upgrade before ringing up, you've persuaded me to get off my arse and do something about it sooner :Yikes:.

Nothing here in South Yorkshire, the internet has been unusually unstable around here, so maybe they are up to something.

Yeah, unstable speeds here in Solihull. The CF speedtest sometimes jumps between 380kB/s and ~550kB/s.

Impatient is OK, but we're not allowed to be miffed until midnight on 30 September (only if we haven't been done by then).

Connection speeds here (Telford) have been a bit sporadic of late. I am hoping this is a GOOD thing?

Technically as far as I could see (monitoring it daily) the page didn't actually change at all on the 12 Aug - it's still showing what it was as of the 31 Jul update

Still no signs here in St Helens - all Virgin are saying is if you've not got it by October, call them - it would be nice to know that they are still working on stuff now

Get rid of the TBC's Virgin!

I can't say anything to make your wait any less frustrating but with luck your wait will be worth while.

I was upgraded on 14th August and have had a remarkably steady connection giving 9.5Mb/470Kb(unless I push the boat out and then it's STM time. :D). This is on the Baguley server which has, in the past, had something of a reputation for having high contention and supplying at times a very poor service.

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

Nothing here yet. Strangely enough I like there is an update page, it tells both crudely what areas have bits that are cabled and actually tells us something.

Still a few days till the end of august, perhaps they'll be a manic update :).

The London site on www.speedtest.net is actually www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk which is a bona fida site in its own right.

Yeah, not sure it's ever gone this long without being updated - you'd think VM would be keen to let us know how well progress is being made.

Anyway, the rollout is due to be all done & dusted sometime this month, and I have no reason to doubt this will be the case. I mean, have they ever let us down?
