Re: The iPhone thread
I suppose 125 for a phone with only slightly damaged casing is always good for spares. And I thought they did the same with the 3Gs as they did with the 3GS, when it's not the main phone, bring one out with a smaller flash drive (which probably is not soldered anyway). Like when I got mine, you could get 3GS in 16 and 32 and 3G in 8, now you can only get the 3GS in 8.

Re: The iPhone thread
Did anyone see the Apple conference?
Looks like Apple announced a few things: As expected, the iPod touch gets an iPhone 4 makeover, including FaceTime. They announced not one, but *two* iOS upgrades. iOS iOS 4.1 (due next week) works on iPhones and iPod touches, and adds the following
Also, they have apparently fixed bugs involving the Proximity sensor, Bluetooth and they've improved the speed on the 3G. iOS 4.2 works on iPad, iPhone and iPod touch and will be available in November. It adds[List][*]Airplay. An app that enables you to stream music and video to your iPad from your computer, or from your iPad to your Apple TV (the version announced today).[*]Printing via WiFi or your computer. It also brings the facilities on the iPad into line with the facilities on the iPhone 4 (folders for apps etc). Apple TV Apple also announced a new Apple TV. This media player also runs iOS, but has no onboard storage, so has to stream content from a PC, from the iTunes store or from an iPad running Airplay. It costs $99 (or £99 in the UK). It is a quarter of the size of the 1st Gen Apple TV. It supports HD (up to 720p only sadly). It supports Rentals from the iTunes store but does not support purchasing. iPod Nano This is more like an iPod touch nano now, as it has lost the scroll wheel and has a tiny multi touch screen. It has also lost the Video camera the previous nano had (which I could never see the point of), as well as video playback. It's the same size as the 1st Gen Nano. iPod Shuffle Actually looks like the 1st gen nano now, but adds Voice Over support iTunes They've up the version number to 10, but it looks like the major change is a new social networking system called "Ping". More at http://www.tuaw.com ---------- Post added 02-09-2010 at 01:28 ---------- Previous post was 01-09-2010 at 23:45 ---------- This looks beautiful. Epic have released a technology demo running on the Unreal Engine 3 for iOS. It runs on iPad, iPhone or iPod touch, but needs at least a 3GS or 3rd Gen iPod Touch. http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/epic-...388888815?mt=8 |

Re: The iPhone thread
I have to admit, I got lucky. They were getting rid of a few old Shuttle boxes from work. I was able to nab one, get a Geforce 6 graphics card (I needed a half-height AGP card for the machine, and this was the most powerful I could find) and install Xbox Media Centre on it.
Does a lovely job of streaming pretty much any media from my NAS. It's physically bigger than the Apple TV, but considerably smaller than the v+ it sits next to. It doesn't do HDMI, but that's not a problem as I only have an SD TV set. It does have a 160 gig HDD, so I can store a fair bit of media on it even without the NAS, and I did get it for next to nothing (the machine was free, the GFX card was £40). |

Re: The iPhone thread
If using iOS4.0.1 or lower, simply visit http://jailbreakme.com on the iPhone's browser & follow the instructions.
There are also other methods for earlier iOS versions & other devices. iOS4.0.2 & above cannot be Jailbroken using http://jailbreakme.com, as iOS4.0.2 patched the PDF exploit used by the site to perform the JB. Other holes still exist, however, & there should soon be a programme for Jailbreaking iOS devices running iOS4.1 (current version) via connecting it to your PC/Mac (like previous Jailbreaks, prior to the http://jailbreakme.com method). The iPhone Dev Team are the main Jailbreaking guys, & have a lot of info at their site: http://blog.iphone-dev.org/ Wikipedia entry all about Jailbreaking: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IOS_jailbreaking EDIT: Oh, & although not illegal, it *does* void your warranty (if Apple find out). It can be removed easily enough though simply by restoring the firmware via iTunes. |
Re: The iPhone thread
It all sounds a bit dodgy to me Matt.
|
Re: The iPhone thread
Not at all :)
This page has posts & links about the legality of it, from the recent ruling in the US which moved it from being a "grey area" to being 100% legal: http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/26...d-page-96.html I Jailbroke my iPhone 3GS last year, using "Redsn0w", & later did it again using "Blackra1n" after Apple updated the firmware. I Jailbroke my iPhone 4 this year using "JailBreakMe.com". Very quick & easy each time, & easy to remove if you don't want it anymore. There are a lot of Apps out there which, for one reason or another, are not on the App Store & can only be obtained via Jailbreaking. A couple of my favourites are SBSettings (process manager, & swipe toggles for various settings) and IntelliScreen (Lockscreen widgets for Mail, SMS, News, Weather). |
Re: The iPhone thread
We are looking at using Growl on our Macs at work for various notifications (software installs completing etc), and I just found in interesting plugin. It's called Prowl. It enables you to send growl notifications to the web, and also, if you install the iPhone app (which costs £1.79), send push notifications to your iPhone.
You can register at http://prowl.weks.net/ |

This is important for me as the computers I am running growl on are at work, and generally running from 9am to 11:45pm so could send me notifications when I am not at work (which I may not want). I also like the fact you don't actually have to run anything on the phone unless you want to reconfigure the notifications, and you don't need to be on the same network. Oh, and you can log into their website and check the last few notifications. |

Well, after a lot of drama in the Jailbreaking community, there are now two tools to Jailbreak devices running iOS 4.1. Both use the same bootrom exploit, & would require a hardware change to block (as such it's apparently a "pwned for life" Jailbreak).

My daughter has a 3gs and someone jailbroke it for her. It worked ok for a week then it started having random apps opening & closing with random phone turn offs. She was told the only way to un-jailbreak the phone was to do a factory reset which she done and now the phone wont turn on. I'm from the darkside so phones born of fruit I have no idea about. Any thoughts or idea's as to what may have gone wrong.

Re: The iPhone thread
Yup, had the same problem. you need to download the firmware from here 4.0.1 (no newer than 4.0.1)
Launch itunes on your PC or Mac follow the instructions here to put the iphone into DFU mode (Device Firmware Update) and use the instructions in the first link to load the firmware onto the device. You now have a non-jailbroken iphone running a jailbreakable firmware. Jailbreak it as normal using jailbreakme.com. Once you have Cydia on it, install ultrasn0w from the list of cydia apps and you have an unlocked, jailbroken iphone which is hacktivated (no need to connect to itunes to change sims) |

Right, I'm late to join this thread but I'm looking at getting an Iphone4.
Can anyone who knows a bit about it all tell me if there is anything I need to know before I go for it. I'm on Virgin but have just found out they don't do it so I guess that is ruled out. Anyone know any good offers? So far O2 looks good. I don't want to spend more than £25 to £30 a month maximum. Thankyou. |
Re: The iPhone thread
Depends on what you want, what you're willing to pay each month, what you're willing to pay up-front, & of course who gives you the best reception.
Unless the tariffs have changed significantly since the launch... Tesco: Excellent deals. Higher up-front cost, but the lowest total cost of ownership over the length of the contract. Uses O2's network. O2: Pretty good. Better IMO than Orange's prices. Vodafone: Almost identical to O2's prices, but with 1GB data instead of 500MB. 3: Good deals, but you can only get a 24 month contract. Orange: Nothing special. T-Mobile: Crappy tariffs & prices. IMO, of course. Have a look at this: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/deals/cheap-iphone |

Re: The iPhone thread
Thanks.
I am fine with about 100 minutes as that is about 3 minutes a day so not bad. I tend to use it more for texts and so would like an unlimited texts deal. I also want Internet access at no extra charge. The guy in the O2 shop said 500mb is fine for facebook, twitter, emails and the odd download. Would you agree? I'm not going to download music or videos. Maybe the odd photo here and there. The package from O2 is £25 if you take a 24 month contract or £30 if you go for 18 months. I'd like it to be cheapest as possible so the £25 is attractive though I dont want to go for something I regret later. Initial cost of IPhone on the £25 24month is £299 but I could save £10 overall if I go for the £30 18 month contract and pay £229 for the Iphone. Both are 100 minutes and 500mb Internet, unlimited texts. I will check out the Tesco deals. Thankyou for your help. |
Re: The iPhone thread
500MB is fine for that IMO.
Even when I still had "unlimited" data on my old iPhone contract, I don't think I ever went over 100MB in one month. I have WiFi at home, & WiFi at work, so I only really use the 3G data connection if I'm out & about, or have gone somewhere without WiFi. One thing to consider with O2, unless they have changed the Terms, is that you can downgrade your tariff to the next one down once you have been in contract for 9 months. It means you can take a slightly higher tariff to start with to reduce the phone cost, & then drop down after 9 months. I did that for my first iPhone: Started on O2 £45, then dropped to O2 £35. The overall cost of ownership was the same, but it meant I was able to spread the phone cost out more by paying less upfront & more per month. I'd definitely have a good look at the Tesco deals, too. |
Re: The iPhone thread
500mb is fine, I average 300-400 a month browsing, emails, facebook and even a dollop of ebay, and this is for about 2-3hrs a day.
There are plenty of apps available for data monitoring, but as I use Android I couldn't recommend any for the iPhone. |
Re: The iPhone thread
I've just looked at the Tesco deals.
One of them comes to exactly the same price as O2 (Cost of phone and cost (per month x 12) but offers 150 more minutes. I guess it is who is better, Tesco or O2. Are Iphones bound to their provider you buy from like other mobiles? So if I buy on O2 and finish my contract I cant move to another provider? Thanks for your help. |
Re: The iPhone thread
Yes, unless you buy a "SIM free unlocked" iPhone from Apple (or some 3rd party retailers) all iPhones are locked to a network.
I'm not sure about the other networks, but if you have an iPhone on an O2 contract, O2 will unlock it for you for free, on request. If it's PAYG, they will unlock it, but charge you £10 (IIRC). I'd assume the other networks would also unlock it for you once your contract is over. Tesco Mobile is a virtual network, like Virgin Mobile. It uses O2's network. |

You should click in the space to the left of the send button to type your message.
There is no sent folder as texts are displayed as conversations. A much better idea IMO. |

My iTouch is running 3.1.3 firmware and it's jailbroken using Spirit. I know I can update the firmware to 4(something), but what will happen to the apps etc that are on it now that only works when it's jailbroken? Will the update cause any other problems? Is there anything I need to do prior to the update? Can I jailbreak it with the latest firmware, is there one out? Or is it best to just leave it as it is? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks |
