Now why doesn't that surprise me?

We had some fairly major road works nearby recently and the trenches dug byt the workmen were cobvered with heavy guage steel sheets to allow vehicles to pass over them. One of my elderly neighbours spotted a couple of guys trying to life one of these onto a pick-up for scrap probably but fortunately all they got for their trouble was back strain... :D

These people have no consideration for anyone and couldn't care less about creating a major hazard for everyone else!

Chris 10-01-2010 11:24

Re: [Merged] Snow!

Well, we had about an inch of snow yesterday, which froze solid overnight. So now we're snowed in. I just tried to get out and the spot where the beer lorry was stuck the other day is absolutely treacherous. Fortunately I was only doing 10mph max when I came across an Audi estate skidding all over the place, and was able to stop reasonably easily. But that was enough to suggest I probably shouldn't go any further, given that my journey wasn't essential.

Now I'm sitting at my desk, looking out the window and watching the occasional car whizz by. The sad thing is, they'll go home tonight and tell people that the road up here is 'ok', or 'passable' or 'not that bad'. In fact, it's none of those things. If two cars meet on the bend half-way up that slope today, there's going to be a nasty accident. They don't know the danger they're in, but what can I do about it? :erm:

Culpable and Reckless conduct.

One of these nice Scottish catch-all laws where basically if you act like a twonk and cause danger to others you can get done. The Canal isn't a road (obviously) so they can't be done for traffic offences.

Nope, but British Waterways has powers to make byelaws. I bet they broke the canal speed limit for starters. :D

Besides that, the canal byelaws have plenty to say about causing a nuisance. Although I don't imagine BW will bother to get involved if the police are already dealing with it.

Re: [Merged] Snow!

Well, I looked out the window last night at about 11pm and it was snowing, but I didn't think it would stick as the flakes were tiny. Got up this morning at 5am and we'd had about 3 inches of new snow on top of that left from last week. At 8am I logged on at work and told them I was working from home today.

Outside I could see people queued up on an ungritted road to get to work. This time last week on a gritted road it was empty. So, people have obviously thought, "Well, I had a couple of days off last week, I must get in this week." Reports from people at work say the roads are terrible this morning, hardly any gritted except motorways. What a state where we've run out of grit and salt except for motorways after less than a week.

It's still coming down now at a fair rate, although the flakes are still quite small, but if it carries on all day as it's forecast, we'll be back to where we were last week.

tried to go to work, roads fairly empty, but cars were slow. Get to East Croydon, little or no trains, and those that are running are jammed.
Come home - take 70 minutes to travel 2.5 miles. over 2 hours to try and get into work, only actually travelling 2 miles down the road.

working from home today.

Seems like the snow has caught the councils and rail companies by surprise. Maybe they should try watching the weather forecast in the evening - everyone else knew it was going to snow

I've never relied on the Met Office for the weather. they said it was going to be light snow here. right up until they changed it to heavy snow when me and them could see the heavy snow.

even Metcheck are saying it's sunny/fair. no mention of snow at all.

Osem 13-01-2010 10:55

Re: [Merged] Snow!

I think maybe we could do with a bit more of this snow. We've had 3-4 inches overnight and have just returned from a 6 mile walk taking our youngest to school. We were struck by the extreme consideration shown by motorists as we went on our way. Normally it'd routine for us to be stuck in a pedestrian refuge or junction whilst a stream of cars whizzed by seemingly oblvious to our presence but today all the drivers we came across were far more considerate and let us cross roads with no problem whatsoever. Perhaps the realisation that nobody in a vehicle is going anywhere fast accounts for this positive change of attitude but, whatever it is, I hope some of these people carry on the good work and show just a bit more consideration to pedestrians when the weather improves.

Re: [Merged] Snow!

My mother always used to say "it has to snow again to take it away"

Oddly there seems to be some logic in this "old wives tale". We have a cold spell initiated with snow fall. We then wait for a warmer air front to come through so a thaw can set in. As this warm front pushes it's way in their is often a further snow fall which doesn't last. Looking at the forecast for much of the South of England, temperatures are now set to rise as todays snow ebbs away.

Yes. I was one of those dancing pedestrians. Even with a pair of substantial boots on, my own street was the slippiest I've ever experienced. I was like Bambi (without the cuteness;)) for about 50 yards until I hit the bit of the road that has a suggestion of grit on it. Hopefully that's the end of it though since conditions seem to have improved greatly today.

I was given some of these to test a while back and had forgotten about them until this recent cold snap. Now I've been using them on the bottom of my Scarpa Mantas to try and get some grip on the snow and ice that lays about.

They're made of rubber in a diamond pattern (like chains) with some springy metal wound round them. You just stretch them over the soles of your shoes / boots and then there's a velcro strap over the top to hold things tight. The spring bites into the snow and ice and the rubber on your soles.

Well, they seem to work excellently! There's loads of grip, even on the icy bits where the cars have compressed the snow, and they don't seem to get clogged up when I walk on snow. They also fold up quite small and weigh only 75g each so they'd be fine for popping in a sack when not required.

Other similar products are available ;)

Gotta love this:

Quote:

Supt Murray added: "I have spoken to the officers concerned and reminded them in no uncertain terms that tobogganing on duty, on police equipment and at taxpayers' expense is a very bad idea should they wish to progress under my command."
How refreshing to see these coppers getting a swift, appropriately pitched slap on the wrist and then sent straight back to work, especially in an age when we have become accustomed to seeing public sector managers suspending staff on full pay for weeks at a time while investigating incidents of momentary high-jinks that find their way onto Youtube.

The bin lorry came down our road today too, although it's pretty bad with rain on top of frozen ridges. Didn't stop though, which is fair enough since the council have told us to keep our rubbish safe till our due day next week. Not sure what I'll do when the safe's full.

Would have been better with the long shields IMO :D

I noticed the potholes were ridiculous on the roads when it was thawing on Monday. Council had already been out to fill them by Wednesday :tu:

Also the binmen have been every week even though our street is tight and very slippery. Postman missed a few days i think but i didn't really notice.

Snowed again last night but only a little bit, just want it all to go away now. I can't wait til i can take my dog out without her coming back through the house wet, stinky and muddy.

LOL! What an idiot. I notice the police only had a word with her and then gave her a free ice scraper. I wonder if they'd have done the same if it was a 20 year old male
She should have been done, there's no excuse for that at all :Yikes:
I spend ages clearing my car, it bugs me so much for any windows to be covered, even the back passenger ones. Also bugs me when people don't clear their lights but you can just about tell they've got them on. Might aswell have not bothered and saved the battery

Or the people who forget that if you don't clear the roof off, your windscreen will be covered in snow as soon as you brake. :dozey:

Hissing it down with rain here & still very icy & slippy.

Loads of potholes and cracks are now becoming visible round here. It was obvious 2 years or more ago that there was a lot of damaged road surface that would deteriorate catastrophically if not repaired. This was ignored by the local authorities and last winter the inevitable happened - potholes everywhere. In the spring our local repairers were told to give priority to patching the roads at the expense of everything else and managed to fill the major potholes. Most of the cracks were left and of course what happens this winter? Back to square one.

Come the warmer weather they'll be repairing the roads all through the year. there's loads of them. I've never seen so many.

They should employ me to cycle round the country. My front wheel is very adept at finding the very deep hidden ones. :(

Always seem to be the worst potholes just where cyclists ride. :fit:

Re: [Merged] Snow!

More tales of weather-related woe - only this time a bit more serious!

At ten past one this morning I heard an ominous scraping down the roof directly above me. It went quiet and I scrunched my eyes. Then, sure enough, tishhhhh... as 1/4 of a brick fell through the skylight into the room we use as an office. Tiny shards of toughened glass everywhere - including inside the printer. I've not been up to check yet but I assume it's been loosened from the chimney by freeze/thaw weathering.

Fortunately, there are some bits of wood about still left over from the kitchen renewal and I managed to wedge some of it in the gap. Spent an hour clearing up the worst of the mess and went back to bed. Perhaps another hour later there was another tishhh as some of the rest fell in.

Fortunately, there was very little rain in the night and there was just the smallest of puddles this morning. Spent all morning perched at the top of a ladder pulling out the rest of the glass and chipping out hardened putty. Still 1/3 to go. Looks like we're not going to get out this weekend after all. Still, the rain is holding off for now...

Good luck Altis. Hope you can get it sorted (or at least under control) before the next weather front comes through.

According to the met office there's more on the way for Wednesday and Thursday. Hopefully it'll be a case of them getting it very wrong again although they use the "moderate risk" disclaimer as their get out of jail free card.

We were out walking in Shropshire on Sunday and there were still remnants of some deep drifts and ice/slush on the roads above 300masl.

Grr, after a few days of not having to spend ages clearing the car, it was icy this morning.

I wouldn't mind but it was really thin ice and the scraper wasn't getting it off. And my car takes a decade to heat up, it's only a 15 min drive

Huge great lumps falling down now here in Runcorn with a big white carpet forming outside.

Typical, we're off to Pitlochry tomorrow. I hope we get there in one piece!

I'm sat watching my car going white. The snow is settling down onto damp ground, doesn't bode well as it's due to freeze again to-night.
