BSkyB's football rights battle with BT is pushing it in new direction.

Quote:

Compared to the £900m BT paid to take Champions League rights away from BSkyB, the satellite broadcaster's $8m (£5m) investment last week in Luminari Capital, a venture-capital fund which focuses on US technology and media startup companies centred on video, is small beer.
But it suggests that Sky, a business built on outbidding the competition for TV sports rights, is quietly looking in new directions.
BSkyB said the investment will "increase its exposure to relevant startup companies that it may choose to partner with in the future". In short, BSkyB realises that it will have to play the long game and diversify beyond bidding for ballooning football rights if it is to emerge a winner in the TV/web convergence race.

Sky to open movie rental service to non-subscribers.

Sky is to open its movie rental service to non-subscribers for the first time, looking to compete more directly with video-on-demand services including Netflix, Amazon's LoveFilm and Tesco's Blinkbox.

The pay-TV broadcaster intends to make an initial 1,200 titles, including Man of Steel and The Hangover 3, available via an app on Youview and Roku set-top boxes.

Do you research, dear; there are no late fees with Lovefilm (and there postal turnaround time was brilliant when I used them).

And I'm sure at some point they will , 5.1 audio is already down as 'Under Consideration' on the Now TV community so I'm pretty sure at some stage we'll see it likewise I'm sure they'll be looking to improve picture quality.

I find PQ pretty good if I'm honest on my Now TV devices not as good as Netflix but perfectly acceptable the only device I've been dissapointed with using Now TV on is YouView as they only provide SD.

Remember video killed the radio star? Well the internet killed the video shop.

As a consumer times haven't been better. Most of us live in homes where we can get some of the latest movie releases piped straight to our TV at the touch of a button, at a cheaper rate than it would be to rent from a video rental store.

Sadly it has had a terrible effect on some local businesses. My local video store, which opened in 1980, shut up shot for good about 2 years ago. They tried to move with the times, renting DVD's, Blu-ray and console games but they simply couldn't compete. The same guy ran the store for just over 30 years. I remember back in the 80's, when times where good, he had a really nice house and drove a flash car. The guy had a year round tan from going on holiday all the time. I saw him last week coming out of the betting shop looking like a tramp.

Boardwalk Empire has been a great show I'm glad to see they've made the decision and we'll get a great ending in Season 5.
