I know, the linky you kindly fettled started off well, but after further use it started to regularly lock up and needed rebooting to get it going again, the wireless throuput dropped off a cliff.

Wired performance was perfect but most of our devices are wireless and I just couldnt live with the constant nagging from her indoors so I had to shelve it for now.

---------- Post added at 22:49 ---------- Previous post was at 22:20 ----------

forgot to mention i will be using the linky as a switch so its not a dead loss

The BT & Sky checkers said we could get up to 50something, so we could have gone for Sky Fibre Pro but I don't think it would have been worth the extra £10 for just another 10Mbps.

You should have asked the engineer to show you the line stats from her JDSU. Quite often the BT estimates are conservative. My line was estimated at 53/10 when they introduced 80/20, but I could see from my hacked modem and engineer tests the line was actually capable of 90/30, so I decided to upgrade on informed basis.

Even without a hacked modem your engineer should have been able to give you the same information so you could make a more informed decision.

If I had known I could ask that, I would have. Oh well.

I just tried the BT checker again (using the postcode and house number this time, as the phone number no longer works on it due to being with Sky) and it claims 57/20. I guess it's an estimate based upon distance from the cabinet?

Tbh I'm more than happy with what we have, but we may go for Pro at a later date (after our discount expires) as my wife does like the idea of a higher upload, even if the download isn't much higher relatively.

Congrats! That's pretty good considering how far you are from the cabinet.

How has your service been with Sky? Any complaints?

Yup, I was pleasantly surprised by the router's sync speed and the speed tests. The Sky estimate was only 56Mbps.

No complaints at all - it's been rock solid this past year :)

Nice to hear. :)

My own service has not missed a beat in what must be going on a couple of years by now. Long may it continue.

It certainly is nice when everything 'just works'. Stress free internet :)

Yep you can sure say that again.

Although something was going on early this morning. I was AFK and didn't notice the first blip which reconnected itself. The second blip discoed me from World Of Tanks. A reboot of the sky hub got it going again.

A friend of mine ordered sky fibre to switch from his Sky ADSL a week ago and has heard nothing more from Sky. How long does it usually take for the setup procedure and to receive the modem?

I ordered via webchat and got confirmation via email immediatly. It's been a couple of years ago now but IIRC install and delivery of the modem took about 10 days.

Tell your friend to check in his "My Sky" for a status report on his order. If there is nothing there he will have to get back to Sky as something may have gone wrong with the order process.

Re: Just had sky fibre installed

I have had some capacity issues, and after initially connecting at the full rate have lost nearly 10Mb due to crosstalk so not all perfect but largely pretty reliable.

My only annoyance is that I'm stuck on VDSL. People on the middle tier on VM have faster downloads than either of my lines will ever be capable of, people on the top tier faster than both put together, and BT's allergy to investment makes Virgin Media look downright frivolous which is saying something.
