Maybe this should be in another thread, but what I'm getting at is not a case in which there's little or no doubt about guilt. I suppose I'm just wondering what would happen if a jury decided, at the end of a really complex trial which would normally be expected to result in days or even weeks of deliberation, decided to save themselves the bother by just immediately agreeing on a verdict. Who, if anyone's, job would it be to determine if the jury has taken their job seriously?

That's because he is in solitary or guarded most of the day. You can bet that if the others get hold of him he would be a dead man

Nobody's. What goes on jury, stays on jury, so to speak. A properly directed jury can do no wrong. That is an ancient principle. As the jury can do no wrong, there is no need for oversight.

Apparently this sort of thing is common in cases where prisoners realise they'll likely/definitely never be released. Something of a "I have nothing to lose attitude" supposedly.

So the sign is in the same town as where it happened.

so the 'joke' is "if you buy and eat loads of my cake. kidnappers won't want to kidnap you like they did to that womans little girl over there. because you'll be too fat to carry away!"
and then you laugh and order 2 big pieces and say "I'll get fat then. don't want to be picked up and carried away like your daughter was, do I!" and then everyone laughs again.

I don't see much evidence that they intend to invoke the April Jones case. Seems like it was meant to be a harmless joke and the context in which it would be perceived didn't occur to them?

Well they know better now..personally I think it would have been in bad taste anywhere in the UK.
