Exactly ,i think it shows why this country is in such a mess ,people cannot think for themselves and to have their hand held all the time |

However we the car drivers will end up paying even more to cover for there reductions and incentives. Then factor in any pay raises the Unite union will get for the tanker drivers via a back door deal. Seems like fantasy at the moment but lets see in a few weeks time. |

Yes I agree that people have petrol for use in garden equipmet etc.. and that is a risk in itself. It isn'really going to help matters much if you just have one jerry can of fuel is it? And as Maude didn't elaborate and warn people to only store a maximum of 10 litres, then he is responsible for the likes of the woman seen at a local Tesco garage a couple of days ago. She filled her car up, and then opened her boot, and proceeded to fill 5 jerry cans whilst they were still in the boot of her car. Now you can't seriously tell me that you think this was regular practice for her, and that she wasn't doing it because of advice given by the government. ---------- Post added at 18:54 ---------- Previous post was at 18:51 ---------- Quote:

The more HMG tries to 'think' for people the less people think for themselves. If all official comment on everything potentially dangerous (or otherwise important) is going to have to be simplified to suit the lowest common denominator in the intelligence stakes then I'm afraid many of us are in for a very boring and frustrating time. I simply don't buy this guff that what was said encouraged people to be stupid. Stupid people don't need encouragement to practice their craft and don't tend to listen to ministers too avidly. The last time we had petrol shortages people did exactly the same thing and started filling up jerry cans and all sorts of other things (without any persuasion from the likes of Francis Maude) and every year people get burned throwing petrol and other stuff on BBQs, bonfires etc. without advice from anyone else. Sorry but some people are just stupid and no amount of learned advice will change them because they're too stupid to listen to it in the first place. |

note the word BIT meaning small amount and CAN singular to cans meaning 1 only ,of course if a person only has the intelligence of bean sprout then they wouldn't understand that . Quote:

The majority of people are adults and should be treated as such ,we don't need or want the government or the fire service holding our hands throughout life .Some people do though and maybe it would be better for the gene pool if they didn't breed |
Re: [Update] Fuel tanker drivers vote to strike
The woman is a complete idiot who reaped the entirely forseeable consequences of handling a highly flammable liquid next to a naked flame. Despite not qualifying for a Darwin I think she still deserves a dishonourable mention for plumbing such depths of stupidity.
I am absolutely sick and tired of the elf'n'safety set banging on about how we all need to be treated like children, or morons, or both. Official advice aimed at adults should be pitched at sensible adults who are in control of their faculties and who have a reasonably developed level of common sense. Tim, I have no doubt you've seen some horrendous stuff when dealing with the consequences of flammable liquids not being kept properly, but the thing is, all you're seeing is the aftermath of occasions when it went wrong. Many, many more people manage to keep petrol at home without setting fire to themselves in their own kitchens. I've been storing it for the best part of the last decade since getting myself a petrol mower. I've never so much as singed an eyebrow with it. The woman in this case has no doubt stood next to a sign reading PETROLEUM SPIRIT, HIGHLY INFLAMMABLE, NO SMOKING, SWITCH OFF ENGINE and other assorted warnings against naked flames and use of mobile phones, just about every week of her adult life while filling the tank of her own car. If she has somehow not absorbed the safety message over all that time then frankly there is nothing that Francis Maude could have said or done, or failed to say or do, that would have prevented her doing herself an injury, if not now then at some point in the future. Some people simply do not have the sense they were born with and I don't see why I should be spoken to like an idiot on their account. |

'Too much' is a bit vague though and what if someone confuses litres with gallons or a jerrycan with a milk bottle or jam jar? What about those who don't know what a naked flame or source of ignition is?? Perhaps we'd better make everything absolutely 'crystal clear' so everyone can understand.... This whole thing is quite bizarre but I dare say there are people out there who'd like us all to have to do a health & safety risk assessment and obtain certification every time we step out of the front door..... |
