The BBC explains it below, although it has been explained here before too.

GREEN?!

Must be Caroline Lucas in Brighton.

EDIT: Ah, no. Checking the BBC site, the green coloured "1" is a Sinn Fein win in N. Ireland.

Governments need an overall majority of seats (that is the as many seats as all the other parties + 1) to form a government immediately. A hung parliament is when no party as achieved that. So a government has be formed via a collation, team up with others to get a majority, or govern as a minority government but here they can have serious difficulties passing laws and a new election would be likely with a year or two.

With the exit polls giving Labour a poorer result than in two thousand and five, did they shoot themselves in the foot when they selected Gordon Brown?:D

If there are challenges in constituencies where the doors were closed with queues outside, will they be supported by a minority Conservative government?

:D

Let's be clear that the Lib Dems have not necessarily got a poorer showing yet. We need to see the share of the popular vote and key marginals could go their way. We have no clear idea of the swing across the country at the moment and there may be no clear swing with seats going all over the place.

If Lib dems have significantly increased their vote and get less seats then that might cause some trouble.

The rules state that the polls shut at 10pm, and no papers can be issued after 10pm - as explained on the BBC.

The fact that people left it late (and it is only a couple of hundred max at each constituency affected) surely has some bearing.

btw, sounds like your lining up your excuses/law case in advance, like Baron M....;)

David Mitchell is quite good on this Alternative Election Coverage. Good mix of humor and geniune ability to talk about the politics.

Which one? ;)

The one that could not be arsed to queue or the one that wanted 15 minuted of fame or both?

Hear hear. If the daft old bat had stood in a queue at 6pm instead of wandering off (by her own admission) no fewer than 3 times, she'd have got her vote in no problem. Yet it didn't seem to occur to her that she might actually have to wait in line until 45 minutes before the polls closed.

Of course, in Brown's Britain, everything is someone else's fault. Oh, how I hope it's all about to change.
