Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade

The 2-10Mbit change if done through the website it not a new contract.

STB to SACM swaps done correctly are not a new contract

Depending on your services, if you speak to Customer Services and they upgrade you to BB L (instead of registering through the website) then it may be a new contract

ANY new minimum term has to be told on the phone and will be confirmed in writing

Yes, 5 minutes to plug it in (replacing STB), then a quick call with the MAC, a few reboots and then all was OK

Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade

I phoned CSC to see wen I am going to be upgraded to the Free 10 Mb upgrade, and I was told that I am on it!

The lad from CSC put me through to Technical Support who sent me to: http://www.virginmedia.com/myvirginmedia/gofaster/

and got the message:

Size: M speed increase - 2Mb to 10Mb
Oops, we're sorry but we can't recognize which broadband package you are on.
If you are a size: M customer ring 0845 4541111* and select option 4 to speak to one of our advisors.

The lad from Technical Support said that a New Cable Modem would be with me by next wednesday, plus he said "your area will be upgraded in the next couple of months"

Both CSC and Technical Support were from England, Both of them were friendly, 2 nise lads I was pleasantly surprised.

Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade

I appear to be upgraded to the 10meg, however this must be a throttle period as you will see by my results.

One thing though, when I click on a download link I appear to be downloading at what I was on before, the upload seems to be working as per upgraded speed, any ideas?

I got that message, but when I called customer services I was told I would be upgraded within 24 hours, no mention of modem. I'm using an ambit 250 (ntl: ). :D

Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade

OK spoke to VM again today and was told that I did not need to get my service upgraded as I had already been put on to the 10meg 'M' service. Then the man I spoke to said that he would never book a self install for an upgrade as it could be very difficult (he later said he know nothing about cable as he lived in a non cable area) and so would need an engineer install at £30.00. I said is there no way I could do myself and in the end he agreed to send out a modem self install kit but could not confirm if it would contain a splitter etc.

I wish I could understand the end piece of this message, you say there is no way you could install yourself, then you end by saying they are sending a self install kit.

Was it that you couldn't do it without the kit, or not at all?

And I wonder why the guy said it would be difficult, as most folks say it's no problem as long as you have the plastic spanner, then again he knew nothing about cable so that perhaps explains it.

Can someone please explain to me why I am not seeing my file downloads any faster having been upgraded today?

My uploads seem to be faster but not the downloads.

I know I have been upgraded due to the speed test below.

Sorry I was in a rush.

To start with he told me that there was no way to do a self install from a STB to a cable modem as it was too difficault, but in the end agreed to send out a self install cable modem. But he said I would most likely have to call back to book an engineer install.

Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade

Ok, I thought it was the cable modem only, yeah, anything involving the STB will require an engineer I would have thought.

Will there be a charge for this call? I would think there shouldn't be because you are not an engineer, and that is what these guys get paid for is it not.

No need for an engineer, I did the install in under 5 mins with the self install kit (switching from a STB) and then just went through the telephone process to activate - simple!

If you were to download a file from a hosting service, do you see the transfer speed faster than before?

I use Firefox, and I expected to see faster speeds for download than 200kbps that I had previously.

Or is it the processor power speed that determines this, or is it that I need the newer modem?
