The story originates in the News of the Screws by the way, so take it with a pinch of salt for now.

Has it been confirmed that she is to be the new assistant, or is it one of the many rumours like there were with the new Doctor?

It's a rumour for now, although when I have time I'm going to trawl the Dr Who forum a bit and try to establish how credible it really is. when it's official it will be all over the BBC news website as well as the BBC's Dr Who site.
