Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
I too have just had a SACM installed today instead of the STB broadband.
Engineers came and installed me modem in 5 minutes.. Took another 4 damn hours to get it working. No-one in the UK could help me, 3 calls later ,and some geeza in India sorted me out! No queues there either! Whats wrong with the world  Also: 2 engineers came, an NTL and an ex-telewest. They didn't know a THING about 10MB on NTL (fastest they thought was 1MB), only the telewest engineer said about the 10MB unlimited cap on telewest for £20 something. Oh dear! But then again, they did get taken over Speed test: Tue, 13 Dec 2005 18:38:47 GMT 1st 512K took 453 ms = 1130.2 KB/sec, approx 9313 Kbps, 9.09 Mbps 2nd 512K took 422 ms = 1213.3 KB/sec, approx 9998 Kbps, 9.76 Mbps 3rd 512K took 437 ms = 1171.6 KB/sec, approx 9654 Kbps, 9.43 Mbps 4th 512K took 438 ms = 1169 KB/sec, approx 9633 Kbps, 9.41 Mbps Overall Average Speed = approx 9650 Kbps, 9.42 Mbps |
Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
Has anyone at all actually paid the £50? My recollection from the last round of speed increases was that no-one actually got charged for the upgrade.

ntl guy (mate of mine) suggested this site to test your download and upload speed. Sorry if it's been posted before.
What does this do? it tests your line speed, both upload and download. The test servers are located in quality data centers for maximum accuracy. This test is a transfer of nearly uncompressable data (actually, mp3 files). The result shown is your data transfer speed. This should be close, but less, than your rated (purchased) line speed. If you can get close to 90% of your rated line speed, everything is perfect! http://www.dslreports.com/stest?loc=2 |
Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
Had a conversation with CS regarding the 10Mb upgrade for Settop Box owners.. attempting to get the upgraded cable modem and the chap on the phone made it quite clear there would be a £50 charge and that there was little point as broadband users with Set-top-boxes that can only handle 5Mb will be 'replaced' after the New Year.
Is this true, that boxes will be replaced or is this just hot-air coming from CS attempting to not give a SACM away for free? |
Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
hot air.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
There are so many conflicting stories coming out of CS that I often wonder if we're all speaking to the same company
I was told initially by CS that the Samsung STB was good for up to 30Mbps  The chap sounded so convincing too :erm: :td: However, apart from the upgrade, STB/SACM fiasco, CS in my experience have always been polite and very helpful, sorting out problems with the minimum of fuss. So generally, a big :tu: to them. The problem is, the operatives at the sharp end aren't being given the correct information, but that is no excuse to (seemingly) make up stories  |

Ok now I'm confused, just read that 1mb and 2mb users are going unlimited in Jan 2006, but I was under the impression that everyone was going 10Mb with different download limits... so as a 2Mb user am I going to get unlimited briefly then a speed upgrade and a cap applied ? Or should I just stop worrying about it and see what happens, not in desparate need of either so both would be a welcome change.
|
Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
I think you will be given the option - stay on a 1mb or 2mb unlimited tier or opt to go 'limited' but with 10mb.

I rang the tech/support last night, this 10 meg service is fine in daylight,(Ashford Kent) after 4pm it goes all over the place 2meg up to 4 ect,tech/support informed me 10 meg is still on trial,I thought it was released 5th december ?,any one else been told the same.
|
Re: 10 Meg still on trial ?
From what I have read until the 10Mb system is fully rolled out across the country it is looked upon as still under trial as some areas are still waiting for hardware upgrades etc and therefor the speed is not guaranteed to be stable.
|
Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)
Where did this rumour come from that from next year everyone will be on 10Mb with differing caps dependant on how much you pay?

A new broadband user will be able to enjoy the same 10Mb speed as an experienced surfer and as their online expertise grows, simply move up to a higher allowance. Tools will be provided to allow customers to track their usage..." |
Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)
I wonder if the change of plan is to do with finding out (a) their would be too much hardware to replace if the entire customer base was upgraded (b) less network capacity then originally anticipated to handle the speed.

|
Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)
NTL said that there would be some unlimited options as well as the 10 Mb tiers. It would appear that the unlimited options are:
2 Mb @ £24.99 1 Mb @ £17.99 512k @ £14.99 This all still fits in with what was promised. The 10 Mb options with lower usage allowances will probably follow at some time during 2006. I would presume that the unlimited tiers will have similar uploads to what they currently have. It is interesting to note that the 2 Mb and 1 Mb unlimited tiers are now shown as upto 2 Mb and upto 1 Mb instead of just being 2 Mb and 1 Mb. |

Just rebooted the Samsung, and got the new config file.

Are NTL going to upgrade the modems for those of us currently using a Terajet modem? I believe these only have a 10mbit ethernet port, that restricts us from achieving full use of the 10mbit service ? Thnx in advance. |

NTL 10 meg Broadband
I have been an NTL customer for nearly 10 years and on the whole had excellent service. I was one of the first customers to go on NTL broadband service,
Up until this week December 15th 2005 I was on the 3mb broadband thru my set top box (Samsung) and even though I was sharing this thru a wireless router it never dropped below 2.85mb. When NTL announced the new 10 mb service for the same price that I was paying for the 3 mb service, and that the cost was coming down in the New Year I decided to go for the 10 mb. Only to be told that my set top box would only go up to 5mg and that I would have to change to a stand alone modem capable of taking the new 10mb broadband, at a cost of one off payment of £50. I complained about this extra cost because the way I see it why should I be penalised because the box they provided me was not capable of receiving the new 10mg service, and besides I was still expected to pay the same Price has some one who received 3mg, 5mg, or 10mg. Because of my long service with them, NTL customer service kindly agreed to waver the £50 charge, and on the 15th of December came and fitted the new modem, every thing went smoothly set up no problems I was up and running on the net within 1 hour I the decided to check my down load speed and upload speed And the average results were Download 3.43mbps, upload speed 505kbps no difference than my old set top box speed. I Contacted NTL customer service and asked them Iââ‚ ¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢ve I was on the 10 mb service †œYes you areââ‚Âà ‚¬Ãƒâ€šÃ‚ I told then that I was still only getting 3meg down load speed, They than passed me on to NTL Broadband technical support. This is the conversation I had with one of the support Team. †œWe donââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢t guarantee 10mb only up to 10mbââ‚ ¬Ã‚ I said I understand that but surly I should be getting faster down load speeds than 3mb, †œYou see sir it the system it is not been fully tested it will get better over the next few monthââ‚ƚ¬Ã‚ÂÂ. But you are advertising that you now have 10mb broadband and it says nothing about the system has you call it still being tested. †œWell thatââ‚ ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s the way it is at the moment Some days youââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢ll get 3mb, tomorrow you could get 5mb and some days you may get up to 10mb, but it will get betterââ‚Ãâ €šÂ¬Ãƒâ€šÃ‚ I then ended the call in disgust. Since then I have continued to check my down load speed with different software and the highest I got was 7.055 kbps but I must say the down load speed is up and down like a yoyo, yoyo, on average never getting above 3.65kbps. I think that this 10mb broadband from NTL is just a marketing ploy to say we are the first to over 10mb Broadband, I think they are stretching the truth a bit On the whole I have found I person from NTL Broadband support who has taken the time to rectify this problem, and to whom I am very grateful, has for customer service, they are the worst I have ever encounter, never do what they say they will. You will note that I said at the beginning that NTL had not charged me the £50 upgrade for the stand alone modem to get the 10mb broadband, if I have had to pay this then I would have been very disappointed, I would recommend donââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢t pay it, its not worth it. |

not all areas are able to get the full 10MB all the time or even some of the time. thats why it is advertised as upto 10MB.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)
Well, what is your upload,if it is 60k/s then you have the 10 mbps.If so it could be that you should connect using ethernet.
|
Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)
If you have 500kbit (62.5KB/Sec) Upload you are on the 10mbit service.
If the Speed is Slow, here is a few things to think about: 1. Grab a file from the UK Mirror Site - see how fast it goes. 2. Try Modem Direct into a PC via Network card 10/100 to Eliminate router 3. STB and some STB (CM) will have speed issues 4. Try different times of the Day, no good trying Peak times. My own experience so far: SB4100 Modem would not go over 5Mbit due to Firmware Issues, once new firmware in place speeds were from 30KB/Sec to 1.1MB/Sec. PLugged in via my old router (had 10mbit port) slowed my connection down to 5-6Mbit. Bought a Linksys Wireless router and speed got better fast. Speed still all over the place, once some work got done In my Area (I Imagine) the Speed now are pretty much 8-10mbit on 'normal' places, of course grabbing from certain sites etc is slow due to there pipe been slow (China for example). Outside Peak hours the speed is always 10mbit - pretty constant actually. No Issues with Pings / Lag in games at all now. Bottom line is I guess there is still work going on, depending on how busy your area is also has a bearing on speeds your going to get. If 10mbit is crap then there is always 2mbit unlimited or ADSL 8mbit. |

I think this is a bit shabby as I've been with Nynex/CWC/NTL since 1997. Why should new customers get this free ? Jon |
Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)
To save a tonne of ten of reading, basically 1-2mb users are not getting the 10mb service but are going to be uncapped? so if I want 10mb I have to pay the £37.99 but also get hit with a cap?

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)
Right I am looking at
http://www.ntlworld.com/toolsservices/tiermigration/ I am tempted to uggrade as I am on 2mb using a Ambit usb cable modem. 1) I would do this via pass/name ( gfs account so her permission needed ) 2) when would i be billed? 3) would i get hit by a £50 charge? 4) how long to the upgrade? 5) when will the increased bill come/and how much considering i am on 2mb right now |

2)You'd be billed at the same time as you usually would - but the bill would be partly on 2mb and partly on 10mb. 3)Only if you need a new modem. 4)It took about 30seconds on my dad's - It CAN take longer however. 5)The price is 37.99 NOW and going down to 34.99 shortly as you'd be upgrading to 10mb. |

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)
I read somewhere that one of the recent s/w upgrades has locked the Samsung Ethernet port down to 10MB. That alone will stop STB users getting the full 10MB download. Various reports indicate that the box will handle 7-8MB, so maybe NTL are being cautious advertising it as 'up to 5MB' (for the same price others are paying for 'up to 10MB', though).
My config file was ugraded automatically. However, at the moment I'm only getting 3MB download and 512 upload. This may well be because I'm going through a wireless 'b' router, though. |

It took 146 days for them to call me and the earliest install date was the 3 jan

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)
Well for the first time since I got the upgrade it looks like my ubr has saturated upstream, I have asked bbking to check for me. But I am unable to max my upload to anywhere including ntl and my downstream has plummeted to under 2megabit including from ntl. Pings have shot up.

I got the updated config file by pulling the power out of the box once a day, and checking the name of the config file in the 'up' 'down' 'blue' menu from the remote.
