Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2015) Vol. 2

I've heard it suggested that this might be the start of a process to close the channel down and migrate the f1 coverage to some of the other channels in the Sky Sports "scuderia". They've so far refused to comment on this suggestion when it's been put to them by a couple of respected motor sport journalists. It would certainly fill some of the gaps that are appearing in their rights portfolio whilst allowing them to save a bit more face then if they were to shut down SS5.

Was thinking along the same lines myself. It has always puzzled me as to why they needed a `dedicated` F1 channel at all to be honest. Why not a `dedicated` football channel as there seems to be alot more of it than F1?

Us F1 fans are special and need our own dedicated channel, don't want to make a mistake and see a game with a ball instead :)

We have started to think that way too as we have seen an photo of ClublandAkaChilledNow testing and it sitting beside other Red Button Channels.

Even BBC Red Button 2 is listed on the photo and that close in July.

The tests for this new channel is making to look like an TiVo only channel everyday. Virgin has today started its EPG. With it saying just ClublandAkaChilledNow.

Maybe this is the new strategy going forward for VM to enhance the number of channels available?? Presumably, red button delivery is more cost effective??

I'm really surprised that VM haven't started trying to aggresively force/encourage customers onto TiVo at this stage.

I can see it all now. Netflix with a live TV option featuring zillions of channels from around the world for half of the price charged by Sky!

True however SKY are knocking 25% off customers TV bills for 10 months if they sign up to a new 12 month contract. Depending on what package you've got, that's a saving of around £17.50 per month. Not bad if you don't intend to switch TV provider anyway.

It's been a while since I took a close look at the latest Virgin Media prices and have to admit I'm a little shocked too. I used to have the VIP package plus an additional V+ box. My brother has the modern equivilant being Big Daddy with an extra TiVo box. Going forward that's going to cost him £136.98 per month or £1643.76 per year! That is serious money. Works out at £4.50 per day. Plus I reckon by this time next year, with SKY Sports and SKY Movies going up in price, the monthly installment will be around £140.00 per month.

Each to their own. I'm sure there's plenty of people who have these services, and think their great value for money, however I'm also sure there's bound to be plenty of wastage. 200mb broadband when all your household might need is actually 30mb. 260+ channels when you might only regularly watch about 50 of them. Phone features like unlimited weekend calls or talk international when 99% of your calls are made from your mobile.

LGI only use Horizon in 5 of the 14 countries that they operate in.
http://www.libertyglobal.com/horizon.html

And it isn't very widely used in some of those. For example, in Germany "only 6% of our total video base subscribed to our Horizon TV platform"
http://www.libertyglobal.com/pdf/pre...ease-FINAL.pdf

TiVo is here to stay. The VM/TiVo contract was extended earlier this year

LOL... I'd love to know what TIVO box they are talking about. You could never describe the TIVO boxes we have now as 'seamless'.

As others have said Virgin will cut their own throats if they continue to keep on increasing prices the way they are doing. Also they seem quite obsessed with broadband speed when the majority of customers just don`t care less. :td:

Yup, the current gf only gets about 9mb from Sky's BB - BT guarantee at least 31mb. Trying to convince her to change to BT, would be good to get some "free" sport again.:)

Yes I used to have Sky broadband and had far less trouble with it than I currently do with virgins. I only get 54mb with virgin, supposed to be `up to 150 mb`! I can`t remember what speed I got with Sky broadband but it was far less trouble that I can remember.

That is a physical limitation of the Openreach network in there area , there property is obviously some distance from the exchange with no fibre available. There speeds would be similar if they signed up with BT , Plusnet , Talk Talk etc.

In most places where BT Infinity is available Sky offers its own Sky Fibre service which should deliver the same speeds.

I moved from VM to Sky 6 months ago, I've had absolutely no issues and I'm completely satisfied with their service. I get 38Mbs download, never noticed it dropping. The upload is important to me and I get 7.8Mbs, the best I ever got with VM was 1.75Mb which constantly dropped to 512Kb (I assume throttling) typically I only ever uploaded a build DVD to work.

Years ago VM was the best in many respects, VOD was second to none. It isn't any more, Sky's VOD is really extensive and current. Now VM are putting up prices by 5.5% I think I've made the correct choice in moving to Sky:)

I'm now paying £20 a month less for a better service.

Have to agree i had nothing but buffering issues on VMs so called 100mb, i switched to a 38mb bt service and have no buffering at all and i'm paying a lot less.
VM really need to brush up.

Apart from the occasional blip it still beats the vast majority of the opposition hands down in my humble unbiased opinion.

I'm not knocking the TIVO, Den. It's brilliant, just a big sluggish sometimes.

Just seen this to confirm everyone's fears/expectations

http://www.engadget.com/2015/11/11/v...rice-increase/

Virgin Media customers who are signed up to one of the company's "Big Bundles" will soon see their monthly bill get an inflation-busting price increase. The cable provider says "the vast majority" of subscribers will see their packages rise by up to 5.4 percent (between £3.49 and £3.99 a month), which will include a £1 line rental increase. The changes won't happen right away -- they'll come into effect next February.

It's a rental fee, not usage fee. Providing the line and associated exchange equipment costs the same whether or not you use it.

PLEASE. SOMEONE tell me how VM can justify a further increase. Its totally wrong.
What new channels have they brought onto the system.

Only recently we found out that they are losing a large amount of customers, who are going to BT or Sky.

I am trying to persuade my wife to join Sky. The thing that will annoy my wife is if they take off the History channel - like they have done before, with various channels.
Or they move channels

Too much now. I'm seriously debating leaving vm. I don't want to but they seem hell bent on forcing people out. Desperately trying to increase profit for a quick sell.

We"re not getting anything new so I don't know how they can justify this? Other than greed

"How can we justify a price increase?"
"Line rental?"
"Ha do we dare do that? People hate line rental and it doesn't cost us anything!"
"Ha yeah let's do it."
"Ya mad you"

I wonder if there's a required amount of time for channels to test off the EPG (like Sky)?

If there is, it's not looking promising.

Not sure if this might be relevant considering the proposed VM price rise. Sky are being honest with regards pricing, but are at least making a point about the price rises being worthwhile. As much as I still dislike Sky, I have had a faultless TV service from them - considerably better than my last experience with them.

I wonder how much potential future content will be made available for other providers.

When was the last channel launch media boy? Since Virgin media are so determined to increase prices and speed up our broadband (I don't need more than 120mb stop increasing my broadband and putting my bills up) imagine if they offered us Netflix for free. I'd be instantly purring like a cat.

Bottom of that article states they have 'all time low levels of customer turnover', hardly surprising when all you have to do is cancel TV and almost immediately there's a 50% discount on offer in 'My Sky'.

Still, if it works for them who am i to complain about a great deal.

My 12 month contract is up with them in June and i'm quite happy to cancel payTV again if i don't get a good offer.

That TVPlayer Plus offering looks a cracking deal IMO.

No change on the V+ EPG, but the broadcast channel logos have now been standardised to Eurosport 1 & Eurosport 2, dropping the differentiation between the British & International versions of the channels.

Seems to be the way Den . Government preaches austerity yet Virgin see fit to have about 3 price hikes a year. They ain't alone in this of course. Baffles me, the country has less disposable income, yet we are continually asked to pay more for a service that ain't improving . AMC and Atlantic are pretty much the only channels worth adding and sadly that ain't gonna happen
