Media Boy HQ do know when they will launch but that date has been move back once in the last month.

Will reveal date sooner to launch.

I don't see how VM can 'insist'. These are Sky channels and the way things are, they can choose which channels to make available on which platforms. I am sure that VM have skilled negotiators - they need them dealing with the likes of Sky.

Of course you can insist on clauses in negotiations that's what it's all about, and given that VM had this done to them before with the sale of vmtv, you would have thought they would be wise to it, or maybe their negotiaters are not very skilled.

I think you will find, DaMac, that VM can insist all they like, but if Sky say 'no', there's not very much they can do about it.

Of course, you can extract more than is offered with a negotiation, but Sky know that they have VM over a barrel here. There is nothing VM can offer Sky in return for a channel they really want, so Sky have the upper hand.

This is why the rumour about VM and BT working together on a new channel is so encouraging, if true. VM and BT could keep the channel exclusive to their own platforms until Sky relented on the channels we want that they are currently hoarding for themselves.

Agreed and if the promo does say across 5 HD Sport Channels that could surely mean 1 2 3 4 and F1?!!! ;)

It was sent to an informer so this information isn't known at JustaBloke HQ.

Plus it's subject to an do not post order. :D

Oh all right then, July is all it said. But it said you could see their entire pre-season tour which starts on the 23rd, if that helps.

Can you really see any company agreeing to a request like "if you do anything new in the future, you must share it with us"?

Sky still show the odd La Liga match online only sometimes in the week and call it Sky sports extra.

It could be this being made available via Red Button and rebranded.

Yes.

-Sky Sports Extra was launch in 1998.
-Launch on NTL and Telewest in October 2003 same day as I got 'Media Dog' and hes over 10.
-Rebrand as Sky Sports 4 in 2013.

I see your point. That webpage is the same as the email I saw. Perhaps I spoke too soon. But I do think that if I signed up for MUtv on the basis of that page/email, and MUtv HD did not become available on VM in July, I'd have a very strong case for cancellation/complaint etc. So my guess is that it's a strong indication that it's coming. Mind you, I guessed that SS F1 HD was coming by the Monaco GP so I wouldn't set too much store by that. :D

Sorry though, if I've misled you.

I don't know, but I would be shocked if MUTV does launch in HD (unless I moves to solely broadcast in HD like NHK World). There simply won't be enough subscribers for the channel to make the upscale move.

I was thinking that they will go HD only, charge extra for the HD service or that (as both parties reached agreement in a matter of days) that the XL package will unlock the HD variant for SD subscribers.

How many subscribers are required to make it worthwhile?
Don't forget three things 1) MUTV is not just for the UK, it's a global channel. 2) All channels will have to move to HD at some stage. 3) MUTV can expect some subscription cancellations given the team's performance and lack of Champions League football next season so why not try to make the channel more attractive by launching in HD?

I've always wondered why BBC channels aren't on Skygo or TVanywhere considering technically we pay for them via the tv license and BBC are on about making BBCthree online only.
They are on Zattoo though.

I might be a bit paranoid lol but i think it has to do with tvl etc i wouldn't be surprised if they pass the ip address of people using the live iplayer to Capita.

Could you try and find out if Smallworld customers will regain access to the Disney channels? (they were all removed some time ago as Disney deemed Smallworld as too small an outfit to be worth bothering with).

Smallworld only has 6,000 TV customers so when technology permits, I'm sure its customers will be offered the standard VM offerings.
At the moment, VM does not seem to have an appetite to provide more channels to the Smallworld customers (eg BT Sport) so I'm sure any changes will happen when customers adopt VM packages. As stated in another thread, there is still quite a bit of engineering work to be done to facilitate this.
(Smallworld customer numbers on page 3: http://www.libertyglobal.com/pdf/pre...ease-FINAL.pdf)

Now we're on the subject of the Summer EPG shakeup, does anyone know the extent as to how many channels will be relocated? Will be like a major reshuffle like the 2006 reshuffle when we were still NTL:Telewest or is it just going to be a few channels or a couple of genres switching places (if you all know what I mean)?

Got a feeling it is mainly the sports channels that are being shuffled, to add room for the Sky Sports HD channels arriving, however could be more.

He's talking out of his arse to put it politely, the Skysports HD channels will be part of the HD premium pack which is £7p/m. That isn't going up.
SkysportsnewsHD may be part of the XL pack.

Any thoughts?

It`s high time the HD charge was stopped but unless there`s been an agreement between sky and virgin it just isn`t going to happen I`m sorry to say. In my opinion we pay more than enough already in subs to justify it being scrapped.

I can't understand why anyone would regularly come into a thread that they clearly have no time for, it's beginning to look like your sole purpose is to cause upset and disruption through the use of negativity and rudeness. There are many threads on this forum that I am not interested in, so I simply don't bother with them. I certainly don't go in and try to diminish the enjoyment of others that are interested in said threads.

Still, at least it's more articulate than your last post in the thread:

I don't think you know what the truth is. What I see is you latching on to anothers comment not long after it's posted, then say Richard is looking for a "War". What he posted wasn't inflammatory at all. You just want it to be. And I'll leave it there. If indeed these people work for Virgin & have boardroom level information do you REALLY think it would be passed on to the likes of MB

I think that H C A & the Brothers Grimm tell much better story's. I only wish that posters here would stick to facts. Not fairy tales.

Could the launch of the Sky Sports HD channels on Virgin Media coincide with the launch of Sky Sports 5? Could VM and Sky be doing a joint venture on this one?

All seems a bit too preplanned.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2014) Vol. 2

Possibly, but if that was the case I would of expected it announce at the time of when they announce deal for renewal of contract and remaining HD sport variants in the same manner sky and ITV pre announce the launch of ITV encore

I hope sky can justify the launch of a new sports channel an not use it to move "premium" sports content just to make sure BT and VM can't see them. I seem to think the US Open golf is solely on skysports 4 which means BT any view this(?)

I think I agree with someone before; start of tailored channels for sport

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2014) Vol. 2

Well maybe if VM staff, directors etc pulled their finger out and gave customers what they are asking for. And not treating us like pieces of meat, then maybe we will respect them.

Each time l contact VM, its either 'oh sorry we can't give you an answer' or we will repair as soon as possible'

VM are such a big company taking on giants like Sky or BT Sports. And yet always seem to be the underdog.

We are after certain channels like Atlantic or we have an agreement with Sky regarding HD channels etc - when is that going to happen.

MalteseFalcon 07-06-2014 22:50

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2014) Vol. 2

Either when SKY ask a reasonable price for it, or if customers are prepared to pay more for Atlantic. It's logic really, how many of the subscribers want Atlantic versus how many of those who would be willing for a one or two pound a month increase if Virgin paid the price SKY want. I'm sure that you Arthur and many more would be posting on here along the lines of 'another price increase, I already pay enough for my services why should I pay more'.

Curzon Home Cinema coming to Tivo in 2014

Curzon's independent on-demand film service which is currently on BT's YouView service mentioned as launching later this year on VM. This is in line with the guidance given on this thread by theone2k10 who said VM's focus would be on on-demand.
"Later this year Curzon’s potential home audience is expected to expand massively when it launches on Virgin Media’s Tivo set-top boxes, which are in more than 2m homes."

That's my thinking because for a while now Virgin and Sky have had a entente cordiale relationship and one of the reasons for that is to combat the threat of BT.

Some really good films on the Curzon site. Great news if this is coming to TiVo later this year IMO depending on price.

You can see the prices on their website which are quite competitive eg:

In Cinemas Now:
Cheap Thrills £5.99 (member price £5.09) Sky Store £8.99, Virgin £5.99

Older films:
Amour (2012) £1 (member price 85p), Sky Store £2.99, Blinkbox 99p

Some films in cinemas now are pricier but it certainly seems a competitive service overall. For heavy users, if you are able to sign up as a member it is even cheaper per film but that costs £50 per year but does include two free cinema tickets reducing the effective cost to about £25.

I think this service complements its other film offerings very well but won't have mass appeal.

I think this service is better categorised as fitting into the battle of TV between pay-tv companies and TV manufacturers for consumers' preferred living room device.
TV manufacturers like Samsung already offer a great range on-demand services including Curzon. If VM does not respond, it stands a chance of being bypassed by the consumer who will just use the apps on the TV. It will be interesting to see how Sky responds; does it want a company on its own platform undercutting it on some films?

In what way is VM the underdog? It has the second-best line up of channels, the fastest broadband and the most popular mobile service compared to its peers. (BT, TT, Sky).

You know the answer to the Atlantic situation which is no time soon on any platform except Sky's. I agree that VM should have given a date for the launch of all Sky Sports channels in HD but I'm sure they have their reasons for it. Afterall, there are good reasons why Tom Mockridge runs VM and not you and me.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2014) Vol. 2

Arthur sky would have to do something it never ever done for VM to get SA and that's to lower it price on a channel can you honestly see that happening no chance and if VM paid over the top price sky want it will do that with the rest of channels too that's for certain and you and everyone else will complain when the prices go up

No, I haven't noticed that at all.

Channels added since the takeover:
BBC 3 HD
BBC 4 HD
BBC News HD
BTSport1
BTSport1HD
BTSport2
BTSport2HD
CBBC HD
CBeebiesHD
Food Network
FOX+
GINX
horror +1
Lamhe
London Live
More 4 HD
MTV HD
MTV MUSIC
Nick HD
Notts TV
Premier Sport

STV Glasgow
Travel Channel

I make that one premium channel (which was free for months), plus BT Sports if you don't take XL

I think Howard is meaning you have to pay extra for all these On Demand services such as Netflix , rumours of Amazon etc rather than improving the inclusive On Demand content part of XL which was once a market leader.

I look at it this way. Customers cannot have there cake and eat it for nothing.

IF, There are to be more channels added, then surely VM have the right to put up prices.

I have said before, i would not mind an extra quid or two for extra channels, if needed.

OK, that makes sense but I think Virgin needs to do both. To compete with smart TVs it needs to add more PPV services. To compete with Sky it needs to add more catch-up content.

There's no doubt that where with the delivery technology Virgin should be ahead in terms of on demand, Sky have been particularly clever when negotiating rights. Coupled with improvements in home broadband, Sky's on demand and catch up offering is arguably the better product. It simply isn't enough for Virgin to add ott pay apps to TiVo and think they're doing a good job in this area.
