It will be for the best, but their are HUGE changes afoot!!!!

Don't really care about the +1 channels as they aren't in HD and with 3 recordable tuners on Tivo, +1s are only occasionally required. Not saying they shouldn't be added though, just not a priority for me.

News in HD would be nice but not essential in my viewl; most news reports are worse than SD quality.

Before the new crew arrived, VM had already said that the aim was to go towards shows stored in the cloud. I seem to recall reading that rights issues were one of the major hold ups in implementing that in places that have tried it. Given VM's track record with the rights issues with MRS, I think it could be a while.

It has nothing to do with how you view your programs i.e. cloud or streaming etc. but there are big big changes heading this way. Not just for VM customers but ALL subscription tv packages. Remember both Sky and BT have both said either game changer or our biggest season yet. It is not only about Sports subscriptions either but the whole subscription TV market.

Can't say nothing more though.

What I said here isn't actually true. But if you look at what I said in another post about big changes afoot a part of this will see all HD channels that are on Sky available to VM. So where you have the Sky channels if there is a HD channel you will also get the HD channel to go with it. This will start to be implemented and should be complete within the next 2 years. Ambiguous I know but watch this space.

Strange as it may sound but if I let the cat out of the bag then it wouldn't happen. These changes are not until over 3 years +, so you wont notice anything straight away but in say 10 years time the way we subscribe to TV will be very different.

are you alluding that sky will be split in to production and distribution, with a set price for all distributors wanting to pick up the shows? thus virgin and sky will pay the same for the rights?

I can only assume that if this is correct, a deal for Atlantic must already be done. Because if I were Sky, knowing the deal VM have just done with BT, I would want to keep Atlantic exclusive even more so. Because VM with free BT sports and Atlantic surely makes VM the undisputed best provider of choice.

As easy as opening Sony Vegas / Final Cut Pro and getting the VO guy to say his line.

Gents (and ladies though i've never met you)

my friend is going to upgrade to BT sports as he's only 30 meg broadband, M+ TV, M phone. His latest bill was £43 odd quid.

How much more will it be for XL tv? You may say "check the website" but i honestly can't make sense of it and i'm sure its not because of all the wine i've drank today. if anyone can tell me based on my friends package how much more he'd need to pay a month for XL i would appreciate it!

This link gives the different TV package prices:

http://store.virginmedia.com/digital...-tv/index.html

It's £16.50 difference between M+ and XL (without any offers).

The website has his package priced at £40.99, adding XL makes it £60.99. Or for £62.99 he could get the Premier Collection and have 60mb BB and an extra V HD box too.

Looking at the website, L Broadband, M phone and XL TV is £56.99 a month (with a VHD box rather than Tivo). Always best to phone up and get a deal though

Seems Virgin have known for a while, Brand Republic has released their new advert for BT Sport featuring Peter Crouch!

If Virgin get Atlantic, Sky and Virgin are pretty much equal and it will literally rely on whether Virgin is available/being able to have a Sat dish

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 4.

So, free in xl, only platform to offer multi room options, and it's on TV Anywhere but not Sky Go. I don't think anyone can argue that Virgin have done well here. When you consider that Bt can't offer Sky Sports on their youview box, and it lags behind talk talk in terms of channels, I think this deal has effectively killed off Bt as a triple play provider.

I think Virgin have essentially said, having now made deals with each of the the junior Premier League broadcasters, that there will always be this type of offering on Virgin Media. I think this weakens their negotiating hand for three years time, and I almost wondered if now was the right time to stop doing it. It'll be expected now in three years time.

But that's for then. For now this is a good deal for Virgin customers.

When's the price rise due?

Didn't realise it wasn't available on SkyGo, are VM in the ascendancy now?
Is this BT payback for not having Sky Sports on YouView?

I need to phone up and try and blag a Tivo box for nothing, although it isn't a pressing need until they sort an Android app out, anyone know if that's coming any quicker than 'soon'?

ocav 15-08-2013 18:21

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 4.

It's not on Sky Go cause Sky don't retail the channels, those who have it on Sky have a log in for the Official BT Sport App

Virgin Media will pay around £75m a year for three years to carry BT Sport, it is understood.

How does that compare to the old ESPN deal?
Anyone care to calculate how much that works out per customer?

It's not on Sky Go because technically it's not on Sky, but provided directly by Bt who also have their own streaming app. In my opinion, Virgin is the best platform for Bt Sport.

And yes, they need to pull their finger out and get the android app released.

Pleased that people are pleased at getting BT Sport, but the gloating is going a bit overboard, IMHO.

People may feel they are repaying 'in kind', but, again IMHO, mirroring inappropriate behaviours reflect in a sub-optimal manner on those posting....;)

So for all those complaining that Virgin no longer has any of its own content, for £75m they are able to provide their customers with exactly what Bt can, except they paid 10 times that amount to do so. Who's the fool?

l cannot remember what they paid for the ESPN deal but l like many other Virgin customers are just happy that both sides came to a deal and one that makes the XL pack great value for money in the process and yes l know a price rise will be coming for this pack but its still excellent value in my humble opinion..

Or around £3 per XL subscriber per month working on 2 million XL subscribers.

I get it as £1.04

75,000,000 / 36 / 2,000,000 = £1.04.

It's £75m per year so it's £6.25m per month Virgin are paying. I've read that there are 3m TV XL customers so that would be £2 each per customer (or £3 each if it's actually 2m customers).

Think the price is about £3.10. 75,000.000 / 12 / 2,000,000 = £3.125.

If it wasn't on XL and only available as a stand alone sub, BT would have needed to get 500,000 HD subscribers every year, taking the channels for the full 12 months, in order to match what they are getting in this deal.

I would expect BT to be happy with this deal.

Whilst I cannot quote a source or a posting i do remember something on the line of £3 wholesale before to espn so it would be in line with current calculation people are suggesting here and we gained two additional HD (espn sd+hd, America and classic for bt 1 & 2 hd+sd and espn hd +sd)

I feel like a denphone song coming :)

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 4.

My understanding is Virgin have around 1.8 million XL customers.

Whilst Virgin are paying £75 million per year, some of that will be covered by M, M+ and L customers who take BT Sports for £15.00 per month.

It's impossible to work out exactly how much this will cost, per head, to people on the XL package.

It's another 6 month until the next price increase anyway. Enjoy BT Sports at no extra cost for now. Those with XL who don't enjoy sport, don't get too upset. You've had plenty of new HD and SD channels added in recent months too.

The XL TV package is probably the best value package in the UK at the moment.

Think yourselves lucky. All I've got too look forward too is a price increase in September :(

Even those who have XL and don't enjoy sport should take time to bask in the glory of Virgin getting one over on SKY and BT. Sure BT have Virgins money, but Virgin is the only place in the UK to get all SKY and BT Sports channels from the same provider under 1 subscription.
