Re: The Xbox One Thread

I'm totally jealous of you all that have got one today, but I will have to say I'm slightly underwhelmed so far from everything I've heard so far. I know it's early days but I'm looking more forward to the PS4 launch. But I will be waiting till after Christmas to see how things go.

That said if there was a new PGR as a launch title I'd probably be playing it right now. But I've done Forza to death and find them way too easy to complete. At the mo there isn't anything out that stands out for me yet on the X1.

I also don't think I'd make use of all the multimedia side of the X1 which just might swing it for the PS4 if I had to choose right now.

I hope everyone is enjoying it though. :)

I have sorted the problem now, i found if i turned 'Film mode Auto 1' OFF to either Film Mode Auto 2 or OFF in the TV settings that fixed it, so panic over!!!

All set up and updated. Currently downloading Forza.

Tested the optical drive - works fine.

The console is very quiet, although I do hear a slight hum type noise. Still quieter than my 360 or my PS3.

I want to be able to arrange the Pins, though. It's a bit lame only being able to "send to front".

Also, how do you see who is Following you and not a full Friend?

The list of Followers includes *all* Followers - full Friends plus those who you don't Follow back.

I have no idea who is currently just a one-way Follow...

I have confirmed that while watching TV through the Xbox One if the camera pans to the left or right then the picture judders on my TV, if i go direct to my TV then there is no judder, tested this watching the intro of Marvels of Steel where it is a car wrecking yard and it pans across the screen, super smooth connected direct but judders alot more going through the Xbox!

So it looks like the Xbox processing is likely the issue!!! Not happy at all.

I'll have to watch and test... If it does that to me too I'll be plugging my Sky+HD box directly.

(then again, I may have to do that too if Mrs D is not keen on having the Xbox on just to watch TV :erm: )

Btw i sat the kinect on the shelf that the TV sits on and it looks and works fine there.

Your tv is outputting at 1080 but the game itself could be up scaled. Can't see why they'd lie about it though.

My free Forza is *still* downloading...

I've also just bought Battlefield 4 via the dash... Currently queued.

Decided on that rather than Ghosts because although the SP is meant to be iffy the MP is meant to be far superior. Didn't want to drop 50 quid on Ghosts and then ditch it after the SP. I may rent Ghosts later on some time though.

The flickering i am seeing on thin vertical objects is also present on the PS4 version, i still think it is something they need to patch up.

Btw the Xbox One has a rather good calibration tool built in and it helped me with my TV calibration.

You can't. There's never been a feature so long as I can remember. I had the ability though on my old JTAG 360.

I won't be able to check until I get a second Xbox one to open up and mod.

I think they do, when you setup the X1 you have 2 options to chose from and 1 of them will keep your downloads going.

---------- Post added at 23:00 ---------- Previous post was at 22:57 ----------

I have played a little more Battlefield now and i like it, i don't like those buggy flickering towers but i like how BF4 looks and plays.

Also i found in the calibration settings that i needed to resize my screen as i couldnt see the green box around the edge so was losing an inch or so, so i went into my TV settings and enabled something called full pixel and this instantly sorted the screen size out. :)

It has the same options as the 360 did. The continue downloading puts the Xbox in a low power state. It will then turn off completely when done.

Re: The Xbox One Thread

Just tried the calibration. My TV didn't have every option the Xbox suggested changing, but it does (so far) seem better.

Oh, and something for those who stream media:

I tested Skifta earlier this evening.

Rather than install the Skifta software on my iMac, I had a go at using PS3 Media Server instead, given that I already have it installed and it's what I always used for the PS3 and 360.

I installed the Skifta app on my iPhone, selected PS3 Media Server as the source and the Xbox One as the destination, picked a video, and... it worked. Mostly.

One video stuttered every few seconds (even though the iMac and Xbox One are using Gigabit Ethernet and the iPhone is using WiFi N), but a few others I tried streamed perfectly.

Forwarding/rewinding doesn't work well, though, but you can at least pause/play.

It's not a perfect solution, but it's certainly an option for those who have no other choice.

As for me, I'll probably stick with using the PS3 for now. It's easier.

I'm loving the Xbox One. The only issue I'm having is that sometimes the voice recognition doesn't recognise what I'm saying, but that seems to be a fairly common problem. Hopefully they will improve it over time. It would be good if you could record your own voice tags for games, so you could say "Forza" instead of having to say "Forza Motorsport 5".

I'm also loving the xbox one , i think for a launch microsoft did extremely well. The new pad is extremely responsive and comfortable and imo better than the 360 pad which can only be a good thing. I've tended to avoid the BF games but am really enjoying it , one issue though i have been booted to the dashboard a few times on multiplayer , annoying but its so damn quick to restart the game it didn't get me too annoyed. Kinect seems very responsive but still does miss the odd command , "xbox record that" works very well especially when one of your mates is on the opposite side and you walk up behind and stab him ;). I was really worried that i wouldn't be able to use my astro headset for chat seeing as the cable has changed but the kinect microphone is very good , just as good as wearing a boom mic imo but will still buy the adapter when it is released (only problem being when your wife walks in the room and tells you to get off your ....... xbox you've been on it all day)

Ok so just got up and Xbox One did download over night but it seems to change the queue order. I had set reset of Fifa 14, Forza 5 Kinect Sports Rivals and CoD:Chosts to download in that order. When i got up it has done Fifa and Kinect Sports Rivals and then after that has paused Forza and start Ghosts. Forza hasnt fone anymore since last night. Even thou it was downloading when i turned it off. I cant understand why it changes the order, it did this yesterday durning the day as well

Just ordered capture card no.4 for Xbox One. just need a 4th monitor now and probably a bigger desk. :(

Next-Gen cost so far @ £2940. It's a good job I'm running 80 hour work weeks! Pretty much blown my entire month's worth though. I had a capture card ready but it's in use with PS3... which for whatever reason doesn't believe HDMI capture should be an option... Sony eh. I hope that won't be a problem on PS4.

For anyone interested in game capturing and whatnot I use http://www.amazon.co.uk/Blackmagic-D...c+capture+card

and http://www.amazon.co.uk/Elgato-Captu...c+capture+card

Top for PC and 3 Elgato's for consoles. You can then stream using OBS or Xsplit which both have plugin support.

---------- Post added at 09:30 ---------- Previous post was at 09:13 ----------

Do you have the ability to upload to youtube using the inbuilt recording? If anyone can or has, please drop a link. I'm looking for output quality over length to compare to capture hardware and software. I believe the Xbox One recording is actually a Beta and over the next year can be updated to stream indefinitely and record for as much as your HDD can hold at a solid 720p+ quality. Then you'd either have the option to upload directly to Youtube or move them to your PC to edit via USB drive.

(I know the recordings are limited times)

Im guessing from what i can see on the front of my AMP that the Xbox decodes Blu Ray films and games and then sends to the audio to the AMP instead of the AMP decording it. This is the same as the PS3 Phat. Do its bitstreaming it IIRC

Yeah, I think so. IIRC, the HDMI audio options are:

Uncompressed stereo, uncompressed 5.1, uncompressed 7.1, DTS

Dolby should get added to that (and to optical) with an update.

I would assume (or hope!) it can decode DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD bitstreams from the Blu-ray and then output them as uncompressed Linear PCM.

The DTS option does suggest that it can at least output a DTS bitstream too. Again, hopefully it can handle HD audio.

I have put in a Blu Ray film and when you bring up info on the Xbox to shows resolution, audio details, bit rate, etc, it shows the film was using DTS-HD codec. When i changed the audio in the film settings in then changed to DTS so from that i assume it is decoding it but the AMP still shows as LPCM which it did this with my old PS3 Phat as the PS£ did the decoding and then sent it to them AMP instead of sending the codec to the AMP for the AMP to decode. Means i dont get to see the pretty lights on the AMP that says DTS-HD, DTS-MA etc

Hopefully it will get full bitstream output support added, as not every HDMI AV receiver can handle uncompressed multichannel LPCM, AFAIK.

Of course, I'm still using optical myself anyway... really should get a new receiver at some point so I can have HD audio.

Yep, although Mrs D was not happy with needing to have the Xbox on every time she watched Sky so I swapped it out and am just passing the Apple TV through the HDMI in instead.

It's limited in the UK because we don't have the One Guide with full guide integration and STB control.

But as a straight passthrough it works well, and the ability to have notifications pop up when watching TV, or to use another app and have TV snapped to the side, is quite cool.

It's just a pity that it is not a passive passthrough. Great if you live on your own or have the Xbox and Sky box hooked up to your own personal TV and not a family/household TV. But if you don't...Needing to have the Xbox turned on every time you want to watch TV is obviously annoying for anyone who does not give a crap about using the Xbox, does not want to waste energy on another device, does not want to talk to the Xbox, and does not want to use yet another controller in addition to the TV and Sky remotes.

You still have full control of your Sky box using its remote, you just watch it through the X1s HDMI port, so yes you can everything you currently do now. :)

Have you not connected your Sky box up through the X1 to test it? :)

We can only hope so and i have Virgin with V+, it could be a year or so before i would be able to say 'Xbox Watch Sfy HD' and for it to work, at the end of the day though all that command would need to do to make that work would be for it to be linked to the remote code for channel 165 so hopefully it'll happen sooner rather than later.

Does anyone else occasionally have their TV picture freeze for a second or 2 with their X1?

It would be great if they could add it.

I'm doubtful, though, as the way it's intended to work means the signal can't just go straight through - the Xbox One has to process it in some way because of the overlays etc. You can tell it isn't simply going straight through unmolested by the way it looks... darker... than if connected directly.

I think that's how it is in the US, where the One Guide allows full channel control by using the Kinect to mimic the STB remote. I don't know though if they also have planner control, or if it's only any use for live TV.

Theoretically, though, MS could go far further than that in the UK... if they had the full support of Sky and Virgin Media.

Sky and Virgin both have mobile apps available that allow you to use your phone or tablet to control a Sky+HD box / VM TiVo, and access the EPG to view listings / change channels / set recordings, and access the planner to see what has been recorded and choose to playback something...

Now imagine if Sky and VM made similar apps for the Xbox One? You could view the Sky+HD/TiVo output through the passthrough, and then use the app on the Xbox One (with voice control of course) to *fully* control the STB...

If you press start on the last thing you ran which is in the big tile then you can quit it fully. Do that then just play it again.

It just happened again and this time it put up a message saying it had lost my TV signal for a split second.

They also need to sort out the ability to be able to play my movies off a network drive before i am happy and do it quickly.

Does your network drive have its own media server of some sort?

If so, then try this:

http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/35...-post1423.html

It's not ideal, and tbh I think it *really* sucks that the X1 has worse media capabilities than the 360, but it's better than nothing.

It must have some sort of server then if the 360 could see it.

Give it a try... Stick the Skifta app on your phone, and see if it can see the network drive as a source. You wouldn't need the PC turned on.

It happened loads of times with Doctor Who last night for me, it never happens when i just game, so it is a TV signal issue, glad there is atleast 3 people other than myself experiencing this issue though, so it may get fixed eventually unless it is a hardware issue.

Ok so i have moved my Kinect to a new place and it is working so much better than it was on Friday and yesterday morning. When i set it up my HTK centre speaker was below the TV so it was sitting on the top TV shelf and the Kinect was above the TV sat on top of the TV. Now i have put the speaker above the TV and the Kinect to the top TV shelf right at the front and works about 90% of the time. I didnt want it there as i dont want it near the front of the shelf. I cant have it at the back because the Kinect wont see the living room floor

Well i have a well and truly broken console. I have lost audio on the dashbaord, keeps signing me out, keeps loosing internet connection, dash keeps crashing, apps are crashing, it now wont load apps and now wont turn off. I have just had to turn it off at the wall. Im getting so %^$&$%(*% OFF

It does seem to me that the software is very much still a work in progress, rushed out to meet a deadline.

Lack of feature parity with the 360 regarding media playback, lack of Dolby Digital, focus on the US / general shortsightedness causing MS to forget that not everywhere has 60Hz TV...

Still, despite that I am enjoying mine.

Question regarding noise: How are people finding the noise (if any) of their console?

Mine does have a background buzz/hum (although I'm not sure if it's the console or the PSU brick). It's noticeable when there is no other noise, but not annoying. It's still quieter than my PS3 Slim and 360 S, although I'd have preferred dead silence.

I started playing BF 4 this evening. Going through the campaign first before the MP, to get a feel for the controller and the guns etc. Despite BF being known for weak campaigns, I am actually enjoying it so far.

How did you buy it?

I've been trying to buy MS Complete since Friday, and the myservice.xbox.com website always times out when trying to move from step one (address) to step two (billing and review).

I'm also concerned that the page at support.xbox.com clearly states you get three years of coverage in total (1 year manufacturer's warranty + 2 year extended warranty), yet the page where you buy the cover says "2 years from date of device purchase".

Hopefully MS will fix it somehow (the 360 had a similar issue with DVDs, IIRC).

MS could change it so that when TV is watched in a 50Hz region, the console switches to 50Hz. All fine and good.

But there would be a problem with snapping... You could not have the main dash / games / apps running full screen at 60Hz as normal but have TV snapped to the side running at 50Hz.

So I think it would have to be 50Hz only when full screen.

Unless you use the connection for something else already, I recommend getting hold of an official VGA cable for the 360 and using that to connect to the VGA/PC connection on the TV.

While not quite as good as HDMI, the VGA connection still gives an excellent picture and supports 1080p.

I've had my 360 on VGA for ages due to not having enough HDMI sockets (and have tried HDMI, VGA, and component).

I love it, but it is a qualified and conditional love.

As I said before, I think it's quite clearly been rushed to market. There are various issues with it that IMO should have been sorted out before rather than "meh, we'll fix that later".

Lack of Dolby Digital, 50Hz issue with TV, lack of 360-style media capabilities, etc.

The dash seems a bit buggy at times too.

I also really miss the Guide. I loved being able to pause a game with the Guide button so I could directly check my Friends, messages, and Achievements, before going back to the game. Now, though, the equivalent of the Guide button takes you back to the dashboard, where you then select your profile and then select Friends or messages or Achievements etc. The in-game shortcut you had on the 360 has gone.

Still, it is a lovely bit of kit, despite all that, and I don't regret buying it. Back when I got my 360, I was let down after the initial rush of hooking it up... probably because PDZ was such a terrible game.

Here's some thoughts on it: -

Controller - Great. Pretty much perfect in fact.

Console hardware - I like the look of it, but looks aren't massively important to me. It is really quiet, which is something I value much more than looks. One downside is that the PSU has a fan in it and if you set the console to use sleep mode, rather than powering it totally off, the PSU stays on 24/7 which obviously means the PSU fan does too.

Kinect - I didn't own the first Kinect, but I did use it and I wasn't very impressed with it. The voice controls are working for me about 95% of the time now that I am used to how they work. The redeem code feature is great and I like the auto-sign in via Kinect. I've only tried the Kinect Sports Rivals demo as far as motion control games go, but it seemed to work fine even though I was only standing about 5 feet from the Kinect. It's too early to say how good Kinect will be for gaming, but my early impressions are good.

Dashboard - I really like it. It has some missing features - for example, you can't see how much hard drive space is left and there's not even a way to see how much charge is left in the controller - but I prefer it over the 360's dashboard and it offers a lot of functionality that, for the most part, works great. I love that I can instantly switch between games and apps. The snap feature is cool too.

Apps - There's a bunch of apps available to download, but there are some noticeable omissions such as iPlayer (coming next year I believe). The apps I've tried work fine. The YouTube app is particularly good and you can use a phone/tablet to beam videos to the TV through the Xbox One, kinda like the Chromecast.

Disc-based playback - It works fine. The first time I played a Blu-Ray disc, the Blu-Ray playback app took a fairly long time to load, but after the first time it was faster.

Games - Games look great, given the specs of the hardware. Loading times can be quite long though. Also, while you can start playing a game while it's still installing/downloading, that's not much use with digital games because you'll often reach a dead end where it needs to download more of the game before you continue. Obviously, there's no way around that as it's dependent on how fast your connection can download the games, and some of them are 30GB+ in size.

Multiplayer - I've only played a couple of multiplayer matches in Ryse: Son of Rome. It worked fine, with no lag or drop-outs. I don't know if Ryse is using dedicated servers or P2P, but either way, it worked really well. That said, I was only playing a team based mode with 1 other player, so I can't comment on what multiplayer games are like when you have a bunch of folks playing. I haven't tried using Xbox Live parties yet, so I can't comment on those either.

TV - I haven't tested this at all yet.

All in all, I'm impressed with what I've tried. It seems to be the makings of a really solid all round machine. Updates will hopefully bring improvements, fixes and more features and apps. The hardware is great, although I wish the power brick fan wasn't active all the time when you use sleep mode. If you use the "fully off" mode, the power brick fan turns off, but it takes much longer to cold boot the console, you can't use "Xbox on" to turn it on, and it can't download games/updates in the background while it's sleeping. If you could buy a high quality, third party silent PSU for the Xbox One, I would definitely get one, but it's a shame that MS can't provide a silent one in the box.

Yeah, one of the reasons I changed from "instant on" to "energy saving" was the noise from the PSU (in addition to the actual energy saving!). I have no problem turning it on 360-style, and don't mind the increased boot time.

How noisy is your PSU? Mine is not audible over games/media, but is noticeable when everything else is quiet.

Looked at trading in my PS3 and 360 will all games and accessories to see if I could get a One soon but prices are rotten.

Game will only give me £10 for a launch PS3 60GB and £63 for a 250Gb 360 Slim, £3 for Kinect and about £10 each for my extra Dual Shock 3 and 360 controller. Would get £93 for my Wii U as well. Not really worth it TBH.

Not worth trading in at that price, you're still going to have to buy games for the X1 and they're really expensive, £47-£55.

Exactly, I do have a lot of PS3 and 360 games to trade in too but the prices are poor on them too.

Even if I took the hardware to CEX the prices for cash in there are much better. £36 for the 360 and £65 for the PS3.

i would wait a few months and then there will hopefully be software updates to make it all better. :)

BF4 must of had a silent update while I was at work as it started up different when I loaded it tonight and there was a screen resize task to do and also the server browser now works correctly. So it is nice to know silent updates can work, although I would have preferred a message telling me it had been and a change log.
