It lacks the flexibility of a pvr as well. I've only just recently finished watching a complete season of a show which I recorded January to March last year, 2012. That simply wouldn't be still available over a year later on a cloud based system.

Why do we need 4TB of space, I record everything in HD and have never gone above 50%, and I like to record HD films off Sky Movies and not delete afterwards so...

I live with 2 other adults. While only 2 of us really use the Tivo, it's normally 80-90% full. What I have found is that the convenience offered by the Tivo (remote setting and season links that work mainly) is that I do tend to record a lot of stuff I might otherwise have forgotten to record.

Of course, the downside is finding time to watch all the stuff recorded..

We hover around 60-70%

I tend to record movies and not watch them for maybe a year, but because you don't need to watch them to save space.

I also like to keep football matches such as city3-2qpr

Yes personally if there's one big failure by Virgin it has been the failure to develop a string of good apps which in turn would mark them out from the other platforms.

I must admit I'm beginning to get annoyed by my TiVO, I keep having to reset up recordings,

For example in 2 weeks time I have series links for North America (DiscHD), Russell Howard (BBC Three) and Lemon La Vida Loca (ITV2HD), now this week their are 2 episodes of North America, one at 9 & 10. So instead of recording the later 1am showing of Lemon La Vida Loca, it just clips the recording instead.

Now I can use the "upcoming" thing to find the repeat and it lists both as S2 Ep4, so why doesn't the intelligence of the Tivo record that instead?

If you turn of Overlap Protection i.e. clipping, this will force the box to re-schedule the lowest priority recording. My youngest is watching Iggle Piggle at the moment so I can't check but I'l sure the setting is in the "Recording" menu in settings.

Why clipping is the default is beyond me as one of the most powerful features of the box is its ability to reschedule. BTW as a general rule with TiVo it's best to replace the word "cancel" in any setting or message with "attempt to re-schedule"

not near a TiVo but does it not tell you if recordings overlap.? I am sure that I use to get this message & simply looked for that show at another time- or is that to "hands on"

The clash message basically gives you 3 options (although the wording of the message perhaps isn't clear)

- Give priority to new reording
- Give Priority to existing recording
- forget about new recording all together.

With overlap protection set to clip the recording NOT given priority will be clipped.

With overlap protection set to cancel (i.e. re-schedule) the recording NOT given priority will be re-scheduled if possible

Also keep in mind that not all clashes are detected at the time a recording is set as not all channels give a full 2 weeks worth of programmes in their EPG so a new recording could be set no problem 2 weeks in advance but the clash could be detected a week later. However the TiVo box will automatically re-schedule the lower priority in this case.

You can of course look for alternate recordings manually when you get a clash message but it would in my eyes be a waste of time when a re-schedule can be requested via one button press on the clash warning popup. Each to their own I guess.

The Weather Channel teams up with Virgin Media for TV app

Quote:

With claims of a "tropical heatwave" heading for the UK, telecoms group Virgin Media has picked a good time to launch a new weather service for its customers.

The group has partnered with US network The Weather Channel for the service, which will provide UK weather forecasts through its TiVO set-top box, as well as on its website and mobile website.

The new TV app provides 24-hour and five-day forecasts for up to 10 stored locations. The web and mobile versions, meanwhile, will provide three-day forecasts while encouraging people to click through to The Weather Channel's own website for hourly and 10-day forecasts.

That's not really a good idea though - otherwise you'll end up with every app having a placeholder, which ends up cluttering up the EPG with pointless 'channels'

Agree using placeholder channels for these niche (at best) apps is a ridiculous idea.

Apologies if this has been mentioned previously, it annoys me that when recording program start/end times Tivo only allows a combined variation of 5 mins, This isn't enough, some progs start early whilst others seem to end a little late. Missed the end of a program I had recorded .

Any reason this 5 min total cannot be increased?

MalteseFalcon 26-07-2013 20:23

If it is a series link, you can extend it more. I have mine set to 3 minutes before and 5 minutes after with no problems.

Because the people at VM/Tivo don't think their customers are intelligent enough to understand the implications of larger padding values. It's the same reason as to why KUID wasn't included in recording defaults.

If you're setting up a series link, you can go in after you've set it and it does it for each recording. For one off recordings, you can do the same.

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

Not sure if this has been asked but I have question about series linking. We tend to record a lot and watch things later. Sometimes there are more than 3 programs on at once. Sometimes one program gets repeated a day or so after. When we had the sky box, we could set it to record as a series link on the day after. Tivo wont do this, it tries to put at the first time it is shown, not when we wanted it to record. Is ther away round this

Tivo is desined that way. The good thing is that it will automatically pick up the repeat and record it if it couldn't record the first showing due to recording clashes.

Not only that, if you go into planned recordings and delete the one due to show on say Sunday that will be shown on Monday, it will automatically pick up the Monday one to record.

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

This is one of TiVo's excellent features as mentioned above.

A tip for you is to click on Home > My shows & recordings > Manage my series links. I arrange my series links so the ones that aren't repeated are near the top eg. Soaps and the rest under that eg. anything on Sky 1, Living, Fox etc that is repeated to death through the week.

Trust me, you only make this mistake once. It was like WW3 with the Mrs when an episode of Corrie was missed. She was not impressed!

MalteseFalcon 27-07-2013 11:34

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

Soaps are repeated, but unfortunately not on the same channel as original broadcast. It's a matter of trial and error really to figure these things out. Now I have my series links in place according to the priority as I see it.

My TiVo has started rebooting daily at around teatime (6-6.30), it's one of the early Cisco boxes so I'm wondering if this is a fault that occurs over time with these early boxes as I've read on the Virgin Media support forums, or if it's something else (dust accumulated in the box maybe, or just overheated from being on 24/7).

If anyone can shed any light it'd be appreciated.

hoping it's good news on BTsport and I can upgrade to this, TIVO box is way better than my Sky+ HD box just cancelled after a year's custom. Had nothing but trouble with the Sky+HD box and the Sky+ box I had 6 or 7 years ago.

Any suggestions on why a TiVo would recently have stopped recording suggestions when the setting is on, and it always used to?

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

No idea. Mine doesn't if there are scheduled to be 3 things recording at the same time. Actually, most of the stuff suggestions used to record for me I now have on series link so think I might turn it off.

It's a bug. I don't know why it happens, but try giving it a reboot.

If your box is pretty full and you have other planned recordings that will take up space then suggestions will give way. That it?

neilo 28-07-2013 23:07

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

I shall give the box a reboot when she's finished watching that crap White Witch or White Queen or whatever it is called. Irony is TiVo will probably then start recording that as a suggestion.

Thanks for the tips!

Looks like the details that should be attached to this particular menu item is nowhere to be seen.
Just took a snapshot and tweeted to @VirginMedia :-)

VM should launch a new TiVo box to reflect from all the negative press over BT Sports :)

Still no suggestions being recorded. Faulty box maybe?

Did you check for enough free space? As Andy says, it won't record suggestions if it needs the space for planned recordings.

If it's not that, it's a software bug that crops up occasionally. You could try Help&Settings -> Clear or Reset TiVo box -> Clear Thiumb Ratings & Suggestions, but you'll have to set all your thumb ratings up again afterwards.

It's only on 16% at the moment so I'll try the resetting thing! Thanks.

I've just got my Tivo box and I am horrified to learn that the hard drive never powers down. Spinning 24/7. Probably the most eco-unfriendly device in my household. Surely it's not rocket science to get it to power up only at certain times?

Looks like it is pretty good as PVRs go on power consumption.

At least it doesn't light up the room when you switch it on standby, like previous VM boxes did!

Yes, with 10MB storage, 12 tuners, all internet services added, folders you can set up as you want them....oh, sorry, nodded off there. I had this dream....

Some of us don`t need to

http://ww2.cox.com/residential/great...=gntile_tv_dvr

This is one TV service that really can change your life. How can it do that? To start with, you'll never have to worry about when something's on again – because it's on whenever you want it to be. You don't have to miss something you want to see because the kids are watching one of their shows.

The best part is, you have the option to record up to 6 shows at once and store 1,000 with the Record 6 DVR. Store all of your favorites, watch recorded shows on any TV in the house, start watching a recorded show in one room and resume watching it in another. All with one DVR. :D

Safe to say not. American boxes are different in many ways.

I'd settle for the new HD menus being added to the current Tivo for a start; the ones the US have had for months which bring HD and the mini TV screen to Planned Recordings and other currently SD menu screens.

Well that rules that out!!

I don't think I need more tuners/space myself, streaming off the box would be great though!!

Agreed. The US have had these changes since October, I believe.

HD screens throughout would be good, yes, but top priority for me would be a different remote.

The current one is a pain to use, literally. Very uncomfortable to use the menu buttons located all the way at the top of the remote rather than in the centre where they should be.

I use Logitech Harmony remotes so not an issue for me.
