Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2011) Vol. III.

I have just received this back after sending this a fair while ago?

Quote:

Hello ?, I just thought that I would drop you a email in regards to new channels that are coming to VM. There are rumours that Premier sports is meant to be launching on VM on the 10th August (but nothing concrete about it) Are you able to say anything in regards to this.
Also it has become stagnant in the launch of new channels on the platform, Since the SKY Arts HD channels. Are there going to be any new SD or HD channels going to be launching shortly? We know that you are busy with the launch and advertising of the TiVo platform.

Any Info about new channels would be welcome and grateful.
And this was the reply.

Quote:

Dear ?,
? forwarded your note on to me and thank you for highlighting your channel questions. The timing of your email is good as we are currently in discussions with Premier Sports regarding potential carriage on Virgin Media. At this time although I’m hopeful on the progress we’re making I can’t promise anything for certain. It's not always possible for us to carry every channel due to commercial issues however be assured we constantly review and evolve the channels we make available.
Similarly we’re looking at some new channel launches before the end of the year, and I will let you know the channel launches when we’re ready to announce.
Many thanks again for your feedback,
The names have been taken out for public safety.

To me Sky Atlantic's ratings are pretty much the same in comparison to other non-terrestrial channels, and take on board that Sky Atlantic is available to Sky punters only and not 4 million Virgin customers as well as Freeview the ratings might well show some improvement if they were.

No pay to watch channels are going to show multi-million ratings.

Trying not to criticise vm,but they decided to move out of the channel owning and content business.Meaning they have to rely on other companys(ie sky amongst others) to provide them with content and channels,Now there claiming sky atlantic to expensive. What`s there excuse regarding Universal Hd,You start to wonder if they are expecting channels on the cheap. If that`s the case were gonna struggle to see any new channels for the forseable future.

I asked Neil berkett about some HD channels

Quote:

Dear Neil

Is Sky Atlantic HD , Sky Sports News HD , Sky News HD, ITV2 HD, ITV3 HD, ITV4 HD , Nat Geo Wild HD, and Espn America HD launching on Virgin Media this year.
Quote:

Hi

My name is Kirsty, I am writing in regards to the email you sent Neil Berkett, the Chief Executive of Virgin Media.

I am going to contact another department today to enquire about some of the channels that you mentioned and will contact you tomorrow.

Thank you for your time in regards to this.

Kind regards

Kirsty

Kirsty Hughes | Chief Executives Office
Quote:

Hi
I have spoke to the relevant department and it has not been confirmed at the moment if we will be getting the channels that you mentioned in your email. As Sky own their channels they need to release the rights to give Virgin Media the ability to broadcast these channels. We are in talks with Sky about giving us the rights to some more Sky channels however no decision has been made over this as of yet.

We are always looking at ways to improve our service and add channels that are on demand so feedback about channels that customers want is very valuable to us and is fed back to the relevant department.

You can keep an eye on what Virgin Media are offering by looking on our website: http://my.virginmedia.com/home/index

Thank you for your time and I hope this clarifies the situation.

Kind regards

Kirsty

Well it comes back to that vexed question again and that is do Virgin want to pay the carriage fees in which they are quoted in discussions with parties and in most cases the answer to that is a resounding no as we would have had quite a few more channels by now l suspect.

The problem is were does the money come from for these extra HD channels as VM offer HD for free on XL were Sky charges 10.25 a month giving them more scope to launch new content.

And it comes back to Virgin's HD strategy being very inflexible in its model.

andrewstevenson 03-09-2011 15:58

Well they could look to offer a free hd package paid for like m hd free, x hd £2.50 and xl hd £4 and xl hd with sport £11 therefore freeing up revenue to purchase more hd, who agree and disagree

Yes something like these type of packages would enable customers to pick and choose what they wanted and if they did not want to pay for it they do not have to and vice versa as well to those who do want more HD channels.

Vm need to do something soon about adding HD channels or they will lose more TV customers than they did in the last set of results.

This has been discussed many times before; there must be several threads around.

Many people, myself included, like that VM has free HD and accept fewer channels.

Currently, there is a clear cut choice and if you want max HD channels, Sky is the best option. If you want fewer HD channels but no cost, VM is the best option.

Introducing a pay HD version of VM, will muddy the waters and channels that would eventually be added for free will get added to the pay bit IMHO.

But losing 36,000 customers in the last quarter suggest to me that their HD TV channel strategy is not working.

What proof do you have that it was lack of HD that lost those customers?

Whether it was the lack of HD channels or something else the fact remains that they lost 36,000 tv customers so that in itself tell you that their TV strategy regarding HD or SD channels is not working.

Very very true and if you want more HD go to Sky and stop moaning about the lack of HD on VM. At least we do not have to pay extra for the HD that we get:confused:

Yes also very true and I have to say that you have hit the nail on the head here:)

We are all consumers and we will vote with our feet if we are not happy with the service that we get? (Or fingers in the case of TV channels):erm:

Q2 is always a poor one for VM. Sure they lost customers, but they make more money now from those they have. I wouldn't draw a conclusion from one quarter's results that a strategy is "failing", just as I wouldn't suggest it was succeeding after a few good months.

VM said it was down to keeping higher spending customers (basically not fighting when lower spenders want to leave) and students leaving.

Quality not quantity, it's easier to retain the higher spenders and not throwing discounts at the lower ones.

But if they had more flexibility with their HD offerings they could make even more money thus increasing the monthly ARPU they make from customers DF.

You have to remember that often the HD (and other) channels are offered to VM in groups/packs, so it isn't as simple as it seems.

ARPU is one factor, EBITDA is another, but profit is the important one - turnover is vanity, profit is sanity......

If they paid more for the HD channels, they would have to charge their customers more, and that would lead to unhappy customers (for instance, you have repeatedly stated you would not be happy with any VM price increases).

l would not be happy to pay for increases in our phone and broadband packages as they are dear enough but if they added certain extra SD and HD channels l would be willing now to pay a little extra for them thus l believe there should be a little extra flexibility in their TV packages to allow this.

I personally agree with you Den , the current pricing structure leaves little room for adding new pay TV HD channels, in fact there is currently only 13 included in XL the rest are FTA HD channels. Many on here have already said they prefer the HD for free structure currently adopted by VM and I respect their opinions, I guess its a subject that many will have differing views on.

I would also have to agree, VM need to offer more choice for those of us who would like more HD content. If they change the packages around as suggested then those that dont want to pay for more HD would not be affectected.

Yes they would. New HD channels will be added to the pay bit. I'd rather wait longer for HD channels and get them free.

As you are prepared to pay more for HD, why not split your services and get internet/phone from VM and TV from Sky? (I know that not everyone can get Sky.)

Not if they change the packages it would not, they could easily add an extra HD package for those of us who want it.
I am happy with the service from VM, but I am entitled to request extra channels as a paying customer. As they say "if you don't ask you don't get!"

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2011) Vol. III.

People are already paying £7.00 for extra hd,To add on another charge would be suicide for vm.Sky customers are only paying a extra £3.25 for a far more HD Channels and more coming,VM Decided to move out of the channel owing buisness and just aquire channels from providers.I contacted universal tv regarding why we are still awaiting universal hd and was told the channel is available to them,Clearly its another they want on the cheap.Thats sky(atlantic)Disney and now universal,They cant all be lying.VM need to wake up and sort this pronto before more tv customers head for the exit !!!!!!!!!!
And please no one say at least we got tivo(great product) its like having a ferrari with a robin reliant engine at the minute

OK, badly phrased by me. But HD should be part of the general price structure, as it is now and not a separate charge, .

We've got a fair number of HD channels using the current method. I wouldn't pay an extra 10 pounds per month for the extra HD channels Sky have over VM.

But some Virgin customers by their own choice are paying a seperate HD charge for Sports and Movies and are happy to do so another little charge for further HD channels if people want it should be available as well.

That's because they're premium channels and Sky impose that charge.

What if the HD and SD channels (the additional ones people want) are sold as a bundle to VM (supplier says to VM "if you want xxxxxxxHD, it must be bundled in with xxxxxxxxSD, at this price") - if only some subscribers took up the chargeable HD option, VM (and the rest of the customers, as they provide the revenue) would be paying for something that a lot of people wouldn't subscribe to (and if they upped the price to balance this, imagine the screams and moans.....).
