yeah, fair point expecting the premiums for free was maybe a bit..shall we say over confident, but I did expect virgin to maybe stagger the cost depending on what package you are on.

But the price you'd pay for a "HD premium package" would be more than you pay for the SD channels anyway. You're not going to get it cheaper than you'd get the SD channels for so I don't really see the argument of "just give me the HD!" because you'll still be paying more than the basic SD price.

From the 1st of May this year Virgin ran a series of adverts:

“Virgin Media. Amazing HD. No extra monthly fee.”

What do you expect 2 months later when rumours are rife that you'll be charged £7.00 per box to receive SKY Sports and Movies.

I won't mind the £7 charge so much if it was for both my boxes. (Multiroom)

Just seems a slap in the face becuase we've been waiting so long for them. Plus no discount different prices for different packages of TV m, l, xl etc. You get a discount for sky sports and sky movies with the different tv packages.

It kinda blows and sucks.

Because that is Sky's pricing model. If you are a Sky customer and want HD on two boxes you pay £20 per month.

thats what i think going to swap my vbox upstairs for a v hd box later in the year now i have to pay £14 for the same tv line up as down stairs

If you're seeing test channels on the FIVE channels, give your box a reboot, it seems like a bit of a glitch.
However there are test channels in the late 800s

I was just reading over the channel 5 announcement again:

"HD channels from the BBC, ITV, STV (in Scotland), Channel 4 and now Five are all included in every Virgin Media TV tier and so are available to any Virgin TV customer who can receive High Definition programming. All other basic HD channels are added to the largest TV tier (‘XL’) for no additional monthly subscription."

Is this the first time Virgin have referred to channels such as E4HD, Eurosport HD and SYFY HD as "basic HD channels"?

Yeah I'm finally convinced that SKY Sports and SKY Movies are coming as "Premium" channels and XL customers will be billed just like everyone else. I know it's already been mentioned but I'm trying to live in denial:(

I have been told by two insiders that Viewers who want Sky Sports or Sky Movies HD Channel can pre-order them from next Monday (July 19th) but the channels will not launch until later (I hear its August 2nd).

The flagging on the audio for FiveHD is really weird. It looks like the archaic Dolby Surround format i.e. front left and right with a mono rear surround.

I normally run my AVR with the display off so didn't notice this til earlier this evening. Anyone else getting this?

I pay for $ky $ports alone at £20.50 (steep already) and whats this I may have to pay an extra £20.00 on top of that to add $ky $ports HD to my boxes (2 boxes).

In total for $ky $ports package alone I will have to pay £40.50 per MONTH!!!!!!

WOW WOW WOW YOU REALLY DO KNOW HOW TO TREAT YOUR CUSTOMERS WELL.

And with the $ky HD £10 fee being dropped in October the only thing stopping me from moving to $ky is the call out fees etc.

Yeah its still all speculation Won't be so bad if it's £7 for both boxes. I'd pay that cause I've been waiting so long for Sky Sports and Movies in HD. But if it's true i'll just have it on one box. :(

I'll pay £14 for both a month when It's in full 1080p HD and True HD 7.1, DTS hd 7.1. :handshake

I agree that the VIP package does need a total overhaul, its become outdated and bad value. The vip pack I think should consist of what it does now but with

A super VIP package would be great. I'd pay £105.00 per month for 50mb broadband instead of 20mb plus all HD channels and Picture box too.

We don't have ANY official price guide, ALL we actually have at the moment is rumour and conjecture...and 2 different prices being banded about at that, one that says £7 per box and one that says £10 per box. Nothing clear about if this across the board, if its just for new subs to the SS and SM packages, those just taking the SS HD or just the SM HD. There is nothing clear at the moment and ranting on and on as if these are official guide lines from Virgin achieves nothing.

After the announcement....easy option...if you don't like the pricing, then as you would with anything else. you don't buy.

Yes it's all speculation however people post on here as they know staff from Virgin visit the site. People are making their feelings clear as to what they would and wouldn't be prepared to pay. Will it change anything, unlikely, but at least people from Virgin know what their customers are prepared to accept.

It is time for VM to come clean on this issue and let customers know exactly where they stand, then it is up to the individual what they do. Unfortunately, all these rumours serve no good purpose except to upset people!

Virgin: yes, but how?
Sky: let them announce their pricing, then we'll up the wholesale cost
Virgin: great, as long as we get a good deal with the HD
Sky: about that. You have to stop saying HD is free with you lot
Virgin: we need to try and get more subscribers for our phone and broadband, so we bum up the TV side to make it look good
SKY: all we get from our subscribers is moans that you lot dont charge for HD, so why do we
Virgin: why dont you just get rid of the HD sub?
Sky: f**k off! its a sodding goldmine. We will never get rid of it.
Virgin: right, gives us a good deal for the premium HD stuff, and we'll charge for that, but you will have to buy our VMTV channels for a good price.
Sky: OK, we'll buy your channels and you start charging for HD. everyones a winner.
Sky: better still, make the charge "per box", that would be the ultimate mindf**k. Do that, and we'll throw in SS news HD when it launches

A few Eufa cup games and now and again a documentary about a kid with 5 arms and 2 heads, apart from that its a steaming pile of turd :P

I don't really see the logic in bundling the movies and hd sports channels together tbh, i wouldn't want the hd movie channels, i'd want the sports only, seems pointless to have to pay for movies if you don't want them.

Not fair for people with just $ky $ports - XL & VIP should get it included in the premium pack. Up to £40.50 is too much to pay for just $ky $ports with 2 HD channels :(

I'm curious, but would any Sky Premium HD charge include the forthcoming SSN HD?

I think on Sky, you would have to subscribe to the Sky Sports pack to get that channel, so I'm not sure if it would be defined as a 'basic' HD channel, on either Sky or Virgin.

Sorry, I don't get it... Are Sky charging you or Virgin Media..? If Virgin Media then surely they have agreed the price and so are to blame if you feel you may be charged too much ?

I just don't understand how Sky can be blamed for Virgin Media agreeing a deal..? If the deal wasn't good enough to VM then they shouldn't have signed it.

Am I alone in thinking Sky Sports News HD (when launched) is the biggest waste of an EPG slot going?!?

I admit to enjoying watching Soccer Saturday during the footy season but do I really want to see Stelling, Kammy, Le Tiss, Merson and worst of all Phil Thompson in glorious HD... I think not

On the flip side, there's always Georgie Thompson during the week :rolleyes:

My one complaint is that XL TV used to get a discount on the sky premiums, now all tiers pay the same (except for M), so not only have we lost out relative to the other tiers, we're also going to be expected to pay the same as them for HD variants? If what's being said is true then XL TV has been devalued by this deal.

Virgin have backed themselves into a corner with the advertising about free hd. They are going to look silly over it. I have a feeling there will be a shuffle in there services i.e. new packs and we should wait for the official word. Everyone is going off half cocked here without official information.

PS we all know Media Boy is usually spot on the money but I think we should wait.

I totally agree. I would understand if their advertising campaign was 2 years ago, but it only launched in May. It's far too soon after boasting about free HD to start charging for content. Sure Virgin didn't say HD will be free forever, but they didn't state they would start charing us either.

Amazing HD TV for no extra monthly fee was only 11 weeks ago. People aren't going to be happy.

If £7.00 is true, this is going to be terrible PR for Virgin.

At the moment, the whole outcome of OFCOM's pay tv investigation doesn't appear to benefit TV customers on VM's top 2 tiers: VIP and XL.

  • Price decrease for Sky Sports? Nope.
  • Price decrease for Sky Movies? Nope.
  • Sky Premium HD content? Yes, yours for £7. What? You only want SS1 and SS2 in HD? Yeah, that's still £7. Per box. For 2 HD channels.
  • Sky Red Button? Sure, coming soon in 2011.

But, on the bright side, we did launch Five HD today. :D:erm:

I know, I know, free ESPN on XL; TV Choice; Sky Basics HD content free on XL (I hope :erm:) etc etc.

But, the take up of Sky Premium content on Virgin wasn't great before the investigation and I doubt, post-OFCOM ruling, that will be great now for XL/VIP customers.

If anything, won't customers consider downgrading to take advantage of the cheaper prices for Sky Sports/Movies? I know I am, especially with ESPN only showing 23 EPL games for the next 3 seasons.

Was that Virgin's intention? To encourage VIP/XL customers to downgrade? If so, their mission may almost be accomplished.

Isn't speculation fun? ;)

So everything is now ready to go.

Great start to the day with Five HD, but what an entirely dissapointing end. I really hope this £7 per box is wrong, and there's some sort of deal for VIP customers we don't know about yet. After waiting over 4 years for this I really felt it would be so much more a happier experience than this!! I really don't know if I will even sign up at this price, and that's something I NEVER thought that I'd be saying :-(

I've just went back through the releases in the Virgin Media Press Office.

"IF" Virgin are planning to charge customers on all packages £7.00 how on Earth are Virgin going to explain away the following statements that appeared in the editors notes for their announcements of Discovery HD, E4HD, Film4 HD, ITV HD, SYFY HD and the V HD box?

"Unlike other providers, Virgin Media does not charge for HD channels, with all XL TV customers able to receive HD versions of their favourite channels at no extra cost."

"There are no on-going monthly HD subscription charges for customers whose sole set-top box is the V HD Box."

Nothing is confirmed as of yet, and sure we're all jumping the gun, however you can understand why people are not happy with the rumoured subscription charges for HD. People will argue you shouldn't expect anything for free but why not? It's clearly the message Virgin have been putting out for sometime. We expect it for free as Virgin have been continually telling us HD with them is free.

"All XL TV customers able to receive HD versions of their favourite channels at no extra cost". I'm an XL customer and my favourite channels are SKY Sports 1 and 2, I expect them at no extra cost because Virgin told me I'd get them at no extra cost.

I didn't see anything anywhere that would suggest to a customer that one day HD wouldn't be free with Virgin.

To be fair to Virgin......they have to make a profit. Sure, they could attempt to absorb the cost, but then a year from now, they may go bust.

There's no way that Sky will allow a competitor (even one who only operates in 50% of the UK) to undercut them for their own HD content.

And this is Premium HD content we are talking about here.

Virgin couldn't say 6 months ago: "All XL TV customers able to receive HD versions of their favourite channels at no extra cost (apart from Sky HD Premium content if and when we manage to do a deal for Sky Sports & Movies in HD whenever that is, god willing oh please god please)", because the deal wasn't done back then.
