are these boxes subsidised much? as it seems a trend within virgin, of no free boxes.
i also take it these new boxes will be compatible with the new tivo software that will be comming in to use in the future

By stand alone HD boxs are you reffering to V+ boxes or V boxes? if its Vbox whats the point of Tivo?

The Tivo software UI will run on the boxes and the advanced features that NGTV will bring in the future.

AFAIK if it's a 2nd stb then the normal extra box price stands, if it's replacement for an existing box then there would be no extra monthly cost.

Install prices have yet to be released, but I'd expect them to be around £35.

I'm glad someone else has finally said it. I don't find the jump to HD all that monumental. f you have a 100 hz tv or better it makes ALL the difference. Mines a Sony Bravia too.

100hz makes no difference to broadcast tv.

Broadcast TV is 50hz, all 100hz is doing is frame doubling, or interpolating between frames, which rather than increasing the picture quality actually just adds noise.

I got called off the person who elevated my case for lack of on-demand access and he was saying that the stand alone hd boxes can be ordered from the 15th with self install for £49.99 & £15 postage

£50 for self install - bizarre. Would love to see how the VM rep describes to me what the £50 is for If I'm plugging in the box myself. I guess VM are not going to say it is the customer who subsides the bulk of the cost of the boxes yet does not own them. I guess it's better than the £150 "install" charge for V+s. How they got away with that, I never know.

Actually the £15 is for self install (compared with £35 to have an engineer do it)

Anything else charged is for the activation of the equipment and the service on the account.

Also as the box hasn't launched yet any prices are still not 100% confirmed

you have GOT to be joking. The difference is majorly noticable on digital anyway - might not be as good on analogue - still better I believe.

Thanks, I'm looking to replace my additional V Box I get with the VIP Pack. I'm happy to pay an up front fee but don't want to pay anything extra per month. Which from the sounds of it should be fine.

The "install" charge was applied when they stopped charging for the V+ monthly (if on XL tv)... previously it was £10 a month, so 15 months later you started saving.

VM have to make some money and the customer is getting more of a service with V+HD, including any future replacement.. and service improvements (free HD?)

:)

No, I'm not joking.

Please tell me how taking something that is broadcast at 50hz (50 fields per second giving 25fps) and either doubling each field, or adding in guessed data between fields can EVER increase quality?

The only thing it can do is add a perception of smoothness, but that smoothness is at the EXPENSE of quality, not in addition to it.

Ok Don,

I'm no technocrat But I have had 100hz for the past 10 years and the qualityn is amazing. The flicker rate I believe.

Years ago I was in the TV department of Alders (remember them?) and they had two tv's next to one another - one 50hz, one 100hz. The difference was astonishing.

More than what I see I cannot comment on.

Still showing here in Telford
V+ Samsung (Wolverhampton Headend)

However I've noticed the information box on screen looks rather bigger but there is not more info such as cast and actors described (on movies) and also on power up, it does not say powering up, just a moment (or whatever it said), instead it just showed the Virgin Media logo?

Is this normal?

EDIT: The bit at the bottom advertising on demand has now changed to Need help with on-demand? press red for our simple guide.

Ah anyway im laughing I got free hd box and free hd for a year off sky and now a free one off virgin and I am probably the worse person to get it since I can stand the crap they have in HD except some of mtv hd.

100Hz was useful for reducing flicker on CRTs, it's true. On digital displays (LCD/plasma) which don't refresh in the same way, it's much less useful. Many 100Hz TVs are now better than many 50Hz TVs but it's not because of the 100Hz, it's because of all the other componentry etc.

(The best thing about modern 100Hz TVs is that most of them also do 96Hz and so can play 24fps material without pulldown judder.)

Media Boy thinks: I think I know why Virgin Central is being removed from Channel 118 for.

From Thursday the Virgin TV lineup will look like this (Channels 113 - 119)

113. (For ITV1 +1? - Not in Scotland or Ireland)
114. ITV2
115. (For ITV2 +1?)
116. ITV3
117. ITV4
118. (For ITV1 HD?)

The BBC wouldn't have any benefit for launching +1 channels, as they have no adverts. Channels with +1 versions receive extra revenue from adverts, which is the main reason why they exist. It would just cost the BBC more money.

i have seen on ds this Some channel number changes happening tomorrow:

ITV2 on 115
ITV3 on 117
ITV4 on 118
C4 HD on 142
C4+1 on 143
E4 back to 144
E4+1 on 146
More4 on 147

So that suggests 145 will be where E4HD would be located and the spacing between the ITV channels makes me think ITV1 HD might be announced soon. Virgin Central will be available through the On Demand menus from tomorrow.

which is correct?

What about channel 4? their on demand service doesn't show any adverts, they purposely cut them.

I live in the BN1 area of Brighton and received my new viewing cards last Tuesday, it maybe that VM are sending them out alphabetically by region as my surname begins with B, my neighbour whose name begins with S hasn't received he's yet either.

No. (Can anyone spot a pattern here?)

And why would you care anyway? The new cards don't give you anything you haven't already got.

We're talking about +1 channels, not on demand content. And 4od certainly has adverts.

They might have dodgy boxes and are a bit worried that their free tv will be coming to an end sooner than they thought

Or they could just want the new cards for erm just to have them?

Will This new Cisco Non PVR V HD Box be easy to install? I mean our house it cabled up so I dont see the need to call out an engineer, is it as easy as screw in plug in and play?

yes but it all depends if it is made as quickstart if so then no engineer is required

Although self installs are avaliable for the main box only i.e if you are swapping it for the only one you have or it's your first one.

All additional boxes are tech install only

How much do they charge for this Ben for a V+HD box replacement?

Even if it's a swap out on an additional box? Makes no sense really.

Which leads me onto another question, if they're all tech install only, are there any issues with relocating the additional box to another room whilst getting it swapped?

As you are paying for the install I can't see there being a problem

The Sky press release says that ITV HD will only be available in England and Wales, so you may have a well founded concern there.
