Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

I'm still re-booting a couple of times a day waiting. The page says my town is complete. Most confusing thing for me is a mate (new customer, SACM) less than 2 miles away in the same town had his upgrade last week. I don't know if it's possible for two people in the same area to be on different servers (I'm on Baguley), but it looks as if it may be. Hope it's worth it when it happens. ;)

he'll be on a different uBr, otherwise you'd recieve the upgrade as well. It will be happening, just be patient. ;)

Ah, so it is possible then - cheers. He's literally in the same first three character postcode as me. Reassuring to know anyway that he's getting a good solid connection.

Hi guys,
must say I forgot about the upgrade till now. I live in the Stockport area SK7 [cpc5-stkp5-0-0-custxxx.manc.cable.ntl.com].

Despite reboot I'm still getting just under 4MB.

Is my area upgraded yet ?

Appreciate any advice.

Cheers

Graeme

Test 1: 1024K took 4579 ms = 223.6 KB/sec, approx 1842 Kbps, 1.8 Mbps
Test 2: 1024K took 4611 ms = 222.1 KB/sec, approx 1830 Kbps, 1.79 Mbps
Test 3: 1024K took 4085 ms = 250.7 KB/sec, approx 2066 Kbps, 2.02 Mbps
Test 4: 2048K took 9315 ms = 219.9 KB/sec, approx 1812 Kbps, 1.77 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 1888 Kbps, 1.84 Mbps

Smashing!! £25 for this pile of Poo - thought 10mb was too good to last

Hi eth01,

I'm paying £25/mth and on an L package according to my account details. I thought all L size accounts were being upgraded to 10MB?

Confused

This is true. Have you had a look at your modem config page?

go to 192.168.100.1 in your browser and login with user and pass "root"/"root"

click on Operation Config on the left and it should say what your downstream data rate is.

I.E: Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 4096000 (4Mb)

i know that some parts within Baguley have, so of course.. that would mean that some uBr's have been upgraded too ;)

NOTE: You won't recieve the upgrade if you don't reboot your modem. Rebooting your modem is the key to success.

I'm confused.
My daughters vista laptop (running the internal wireless adapter) is reporting the spped test as 10meg while my sons and my XP pc's (running belkin network adapters) are still reporting 4mb. Any suggestions as to why this would be happening, I've repaired the network adapter but with no joy

Hi,

I know all the posts are "do you know when...." but.... Does anyone know when the Warrington Server is to be upgraded. I ask because I signed up and was told that I would receive 10meg as its upgraded. I have since spoken a lot to 150 who say I am in the 10meg area, and i just need to reboot my modem in 24 hours... which I have done every 24 hours for the past week or so.

I have asked my nephew who is spoilt by my bro-in-law who is on the XL package and he lives about 8 miles away in warrington, and he gets the full 20meg?? Im confused to how to find out which server I should be under and when this should be upgraded. I just feel a bit cheated to be on 4096000 when i should be on over double, and everyone is confirming I shouldnt have a problem??

Your not on your own still on 4mb in Warrington, I don't know anyone who has been upgraded and I haven't seen anyone post on here that Warrington is done. Hopefully it wont be to long

Well I will keep checking back. I will probably ring tomorrow to confirm what is going on, as when I was initially signing up they checked the server and said "its upgraded so you will get the full 10meg". Then got the modem, got it checked and they said they have now activated the 10meg connection, but it never came through so they sent me a new modem claiming the old one must be duff.

But this is still doing the same. I have rang since, they said it is something to do with the modem registering on the server, and its probably just taking its time. Keep rebooting the modem and it should come through, but it just seems ironic that it is always set to 4096000 which is the speed the old large package was on, so I assume they have got their wires crossed somewhere?

I wish they would say on the website when they are planning this upgrade as at least you know if its going to be weeks or months?!

My nephew is in south warrington and he does have the 20meg connection and it does work at 20meg? Could he be on a different server to me??

Well, the Bracknell (RG12 postcode) area has been upgraded. I've checked for the last couple of days, since the upgrade, and I'm getting 9.8 or 9.9 Mb. Darn, that means I'll prbably keep it rather than downgrading to the now lower 4Mb speed and saving a bit of money!

There will be no 4MB speed after the upgrade though!

The 2MB will be the next speed down as this is not being upgraded.

Hey,

I'm in Nottingham NG7 and we got upgraded to 10MB over the weekend I think. Service has been a bit dodgy since then though - seem to be experiencing some mild packet loss. Frequently when navigating to a new page, it will time out and I have to refresh one or two times before it loads properly :( will this settle eventually, or should I investigate further?

Cheers,

Suman

I would expect a few problems during the upgrade but would definately raise the issue with Virgin now rather than wait and hope it goes away!

You've got something like 400 customers on that uBr.

300 have been upgraded from 4mb to 10mb. Of course you'll notice latency and slow speeds etc -- just wait for it stablize, VM will ensure that it's fixed -- if the problem were to persist for e.g.

Ok,

I have asked my nephew to send me his information. He is in Warrington WA4 and his modem info is:

Network Access : Allowed
Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 20480000
Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 768000
Maximum Upstream Channel Burst : 1600
Maximum Number of CPEs : 1
Modem Capability : Concatenation Enabled, Fragametation Enabled, PHS Disabled

Whereas im in warrington WA5 and mine is:

Network Access : Allowed
Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 4096000
Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 400000
Maximum Upstream Channel Burst : 1600
Maximum Number of CPEs : 1
Modem Capability : Concatenation Enabled, Fragametation Enabled, PHS Disabled

Anyone know why??

Except L is 10meg, not 4meg? I only signed up a week ago and was assured the server was upgraded so should reach 10meg, however the site says that its TBC for Warrington upgrade. If he is on 20meg then the server in Warrington must be upgraded? But I am also in Warrington but I am not receiving the promised speed so therefore it cant be updated, unless there is more than one server within Warrington? Im just confused as I had promises, which I went with, and now Im paying full price for a half of the broadband package?

I know there are a lot of people on 4meg waiting to upgrade, but when you come as a new customer and you are promised twice the speed and dont receive it is a bit diappointing?

No, I haven't had the upgrade - I just downgraded all my services today due to family (about to get bigger) and not being around/online to justify what I was paying for. All that bellyaching for nowt eh? ;) Cheers to eth and WDINAT and the other techs for the help - they should be on bonuses.

Yeah - sorry think I am wrong on this one.

M is 2MB and not being upgraded.
L is 4MB going to 10MB
XL is 10MB going to 20MB

So yes - one of you has the upgrade the other doesn't.

Try unplugging the cable modem for a few minutes. I know some people have had to do this multiple times in order for the upgrade to take effect.

If it does then it will not be for a very long time, as first the 10mb upgrade has to be finished.

Then next we have the 50mb rollout.

Then we have all the 20mb customers having to be transferred onto the Docsis 3 with every 20mb customer having to get their modem swapped out to enable this.

So you might get an upgrade but probably in 2010 or there abouts.

[QUOTE=TheBeerHunter;34615953]Except L is 10meg, not 4meg?

I was told the same thing that I would get 10 Mb I upgraded from 2mb but Im currently getting 4 Mb I'm also in the WA4 area. I honestly dont think this area has been upgraded yet cos everyone I know in the area has not been upgraded. Just a matter off time I hope :)

Would they do the 20meg upgrade before they do the 10meg upgrade then? I have seen my bro-in-law / nephews modem setup and did a speed test and they are hitting 20meg no problem in the WA4 region, but it seems to be only people wanting to go upto 10meg thats having the issues?

I rang Virgin today to speak to someone again, and this time they said "you are in a 4meg area and your upgrade is planned for the end of august beginning of sept". I asked about why I know someone on 20meg in the same area and they said "well thats because of the speed you are on, if you were on 20meg then you could reach that"... I dont trust them though due to the whole 10meg fiasco. Would be even more annoyed if I was paying a lot more and still getting 4meg?!?

The 20 Meg upgrade was performed nationwide a long time ago. They are hardly going to be charging some people £25 for 10MBit and others £37.

just phoned up VM and have reduced package from 20Mb to 10Mb - see if I can cope with that speed - saves £ 12 per month

my question is - if when I get home tonight I don't unplug the modem for 10 minutes and just carry on using the broadband, will I remain on 20Mb but paying only 10Mb prices?

simply put. CMTS will tell your modem to use a different config. rebooting your modem or not will not make a difference. it's done automatically. downgrades take up to 24 hrs :)

If your uBr is heavily utilized, then it'll take longer than uBr's which aren't for e.g.

Think I will be doing a similar thing as I don't get 20MB speeds anymore and my deal for 20MB has run out so will try and get another one or will reduce and save money that way

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

If you go upto 20meg, how long do you have to stay on 20meg before you can drop down if you choose that you would like to? The reason being is I considered going to 20meg but wanted to see how 10meg was first. If 10meg (when I get it), is impressive, then I may consider upgrading. But if I then decide I dont want 20, and would like to reduce, am I stuck with 20meg for 12 months or can this be done at any point?

HSp8 07-08-2008 18:06

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

I think you can switch between the different packages as much as you like

the lady at VM today said if I wanted, I could go back up to 20Mb again, if I didn't like 10Mb

but downloading from newsgroups now - and getting a solid 10Mb (until STM kicks in anyway)

TheBeerHunter 07-08-2008 18:36

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

Well I read on the site when I was upgrading you must stick with it for 2 months before downgrading (it makes sense to let you go back up straight away as its more money for them).

But I was told the server upgrade isnt for 2 months in my area, so will trial 20meg then drop to 10 if I dont find use for 20meg...although it is rapid...

Havant, Hampshire, PO9 here.

Went from 4Mb up to 10Mb a week or so back, but its been sluggish today - speedtest.net shows it running about 3.4Mb at the moment.

Anyone in the Cosham area with similar slowdown?

Im in portsmouth, (on cosham ubr) on 10meg, gettin speeds of ~280KB/s from virgin gamefiles so i guess theres something up in the area. Pings to gameservers are fine tho.

*edit* Just realised i may be stm'ed up is at 12KB/s and down is around 75% of 10meg :td::dunce:

Hmmm, same area myself, Baguley area, was on the 4mb, which has APPARENTLY just been upgraded to 10. Just unplugged and rebooted the modem and my router to be sure. Got a speed increase, but I could only achieve 6.5mbits p/s despite using ethernet. This was just before 18:00, now the whole thing has ground to a halt (internet access has been semi-intermittent for the past few days) The modem config page reports it has the speed increase.

I downloaded a few hundred megs on rapidshare to test the speeds - averaged just under 7mb/s,but now its going slow again (I thought VM removed the lower download speed nonsense after you've downloaded a certain amount, which I don't think I've hit yet but it hasn't affected me for a while.)

Current speeds (after 18:00) are around 4600kb/s according to speedtest.net, but its fluctuating quite a bit. Gonna give it a few days to settle down, and if things don't improve I'll give VM a call.

as of 19:00 things are looking a little better in the Macc area, still fluctuating a bit, but I'm hopeful for tomorrow morning.

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

eth01 - Please can you try and find out what is going on, Baguley is now listed as 'complete' and yet it is evidently *not*. I am in Withington/Fallowfield border (M20/M14), which is covered by the Baguley UBR's (Client Host Name: cpc3-with2-0-0-custxxx.bagu.cable.ntl.com) and yet I have rebooted several times (modem powered off for up to five minutes at a time) and I am still clearly on 4MB. I do not use a router, I connect via Ethernet directly to my NTL Home 200 Ambit Eth/USB combi cable modem.

Here's my config:
Network Access : Allowed
Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 4096000
Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 400000
Maximum Upstream Channel Burst : 1600
Modem Capability : Concatenation Enabled, Fragmentation Disabled, PHS Disabled
Maximum Number of CPEs : 1

This is now getting a little silly, I understand it is a free upgrade and for that I am truly grateful....but this doesn't negate the fact that the Virgin update page has now taken to lying to me. :td: ;)

So I would greatly appreciate any information or assistance you may offer me as regards why I haven't yet got 10MB, and/or when I can *truly* expect it. Thank you.

Hi Slitheen,
I just had a chat with support re this (I'm Withington too). First line guy said it should be working at 10Mb, he got on to the second line guys who said that some of the cabinets hadn't been updated yet and should be within the next 2-3 days. Fear not, it's on its way.

After reading all the horror stories of lower speeds than before the upgrade, I'm please to say that even during the day I'm getting 9885kbps on speedtest.net, and even though such sites are only a guideline at best, the results tally with my actual download speeds when leeching large files. I can't wait to see how it runs at 2:00am-3:00am or so - when I do most of my downloading.

Very pleased! Well worth the wait!
