been a tough week with no footie :)

think the problem with England is that we actually thik we can win it. We aren't good enough yet and as soon as we realise that we can work towards building on the talent we do have.

Can't imagine players like Phil Neville, Butt, Heskey and Vassell getting in the teams of France, Spain, Portugal but we have them in our squad :Yikes: :Yikes:

well done to Simon Jordan the Palace chairman. he was trying to sign Tim Cahill from Millwall. They had gon straight to Millwall for the player and agreed terms without going from an agent. Then when they were about the sign the deal SFX Cahill's agents demanded a few of 125,000 for doing no work at all. Jordan refused to pay it and said that's an issue between you and the player get him to pay it.

if only all clubs and chairman did this.

Forest reject Tottenham's 3m bid for winger Reid

Are Spurs stupid?

Having had a 5m + Rohan Ricketts bid rejected in January, today they bid 3m for the most exciting talent outside the Premiership, Andy Reid (<-)

What makes them think that they will get him for that price, when they've had a higher bid rejected, for a player who is openly happy at the City Ground. Idiots.

nffc 27-07-2004 17:52

Re: [Merged] - Football talk

Spuds have even denied bidding now.

Much as I can be optimistic I can only see Viduka and Hasselbaink wasting our defence tonight though- apart from Morgan we have no fit defensive quality in the side with Dawson, Louis-Jean, Rogers all out, Tarka going to the Olympics, Doig suspect, Robertson too lightweight and Walker retired.

And it gets worse as the Major Oak is suspended for the first two games.

Come on Joe sign some ****ing defenders or we'll be winning 6-5 instead of 6-0!

yesman 27-07-2004 23:56

Re: [Merged] - Football talk

I can't help but think Eriksson is on his way out after reading this, his record however as England coach is not that bad, but he has now been accused of having an affair with a female employee of the FA.

The same female employee has had an affair with Mark Palios, but the FA has considered that to be OK :wtf:

Maybe Sven wasn't as good in bed or maybe his team wasn't good enough on the pitch during the recent tournament in Portugal, it just seems odd to me this has come out now, I wouldn't mind betting that if England had done better or even won the competition , this affair might have been covered up.

My conclusion: The FA want him out !!

nffc 28-07-2004 01:17

Re: [Merged] - Football talk

If Eriksson were female, he would be termed "slag". His private life shouldn't affect his job in an ideal world, but as usual real life is far from ideal and it's getting to the stage where it's getting so much media attention and this is the THIRD time. Coupled with an extremely poor showing it's time he were fired and replaced with Curbishley or McClaren.

Staying with McClaren I feel like crying. Forest 1-4 Middlesbrough. Outclassed, outplayed and outscored; the cracks in our defence evident for all to see. Good to see Big Jon back though and atm I have confidence in Kinnear's confidence to patch it especially with the players we are getting for Reidy.

this is why the prem is so full of foreigners.. every young \ good player from down the leagues costs about 5-10 million when the top clups can just go out and buy a cheap foreign inport for half the cost of less and know he is already proven in a top flight league abroad.. think some of the lower clubs should stop being so greedy.. what's better getting 3 million every 10 years for one player or letting them go to top clubs for cheaper and getting 10 lots of 500,000

if you had seen andy reid play you would realise on top form he is worth 5m at least.

as kinnear said he has the potential to be better than damien duff and he went for 17m.

As for Sven, it's the same old story. If he goes, he'll be replaced by someone hailed as the new messiah of English football, then in a few years he'll either be forced out by a scandal or improper behaviour (ie Hoddle, Venables) or by bad results after failing to win yet another tournament (ie Taylor, Robson and all the others).

That's inherent in the opinions of an overexpectent public. England will be second rate until they are managed properly- Sven is not the right man to do that.

We need a Clough character. But the FA will be too scared.

very true.. i think until we admit we can't win a tournament then we won't very improve on where we are.. Sven hasn't moved the team forwards and has no tactical knowledge whatsoever.. we have the basis of a good squad to build on but they aren't tournament winners yet..

Lets hope Sven goes then at least the next manager won't pick Phil Neville

nffc 29-07-2004 13:24

Re: [Merged] - Football talk

Not only that but his tactics are so un-English- as epitomised in the Euro games especially v France and Portugal: Go a goal up then defend it for the rest of the game.

Which doesn't work if your defence is s**** does it?

sherer 29-07-2004 14:14

Re: [Merged] - Football talk

very true.. if we had gone for another goal we never would have lost those games.. also hoofing the ball up the field and giving it straight back to the other team isn't the sort of thing a potential tournament winning team should be doing..

sven just isn't good enough and not being english he never seems to get excited or make changes during a match when things aren't going well..

if we hadn't beaten germany 5-1 don't think he would still be in the job and why does he get 4 million a year when he just seems to read the sun to work out who to pick and what formation to play

Re: [Merged] - Football talk

as a Red it's good news to be that Scholes has retired but not that great for England. Think if Sven had played him in the middle behind two strikers then he would still be in the setup.. Playing on the left where you can't do anything was probably why he went..

Noticed the pitch last night as well and wasn't too impressed either.. we used to have the best pitch in the league and now it's abit rubbish. One of the problems is that high stadiums like ours mean certain parts don't get any sun at all

One thing I don't understand is SAF's desire to hold on to 'Donkey' Diego Forlan...I mean come on...in 3 years what has he done? Apart from scoring the 2 goals which beat Liverpool 2 years ago, he's hoofed more balls over the bar than he's put in the back of the net.

I thought I'd heard some rumblings this summer about him leaving Man U (at one point, there was a rumour that Villa were trying to sign him :Yikes: ). TBH, I'd be surprised if anybody in this country would want him - let's face it, he's pretty much a prime example of somebody who couldn't hit a barn door with a banjo!

sherer 04-08-2004 15:11

Re: [Merged] - Football talk

he's meant to be off to spain where i think he will play very well with more time on the ball.. he has plenty of skill just doesn't seem to be able to use it.. he got a great goal against Chelsea and Villa the other year and looked very good in Copa America.. just abit rubbish in a United shirt

sherer 06-08-2004 11:32

Re: [Merged] - Football talk

so Sven seems to have kept his job for now at least.

think the real question isn't anything to do with the affir though but why was he nearly sacked for something he's done away from football and why wasn'tthis hearing about what he has and hasn't done on the pitch

What does he actually do as a coach
He doesn't take any coaching sessions himself
He doesn't talk to the coaches after the training sessions
I get the impression he doesn't talk to the team tactically or mentally before or during a game
The players went on strike to get rid of the diamond system :Yikes: :Yikes: The manager should be deciding the tactics and formations he needs to have strength here
Loyalty to unfit ( Beckham ) or rubbish ( Heskey, Phil Neville ) players
Plays people out of position
Very little tactical knowledge
Barely even watches a game
Negative play
Lack of imagination
Reports claim Beckham picks half the team for him
Lets the papers dictate who should be picked ( Rooney and Alan Thompson )
Overpaid
Disloyal ( Chelsea and Man U jobs)

surely the above is enough to get rid of him

We could have had the sun reports picking the England team and had the same results as Sven, we almost did!!

If the 5-1 against Germany hadn't happened think he woulod have gone by now. He done very little in club management. he won the league with Benfica but there are only 2 teams in Portugal so not very hard.

he nearly bankrupted 2 clubs in Italy and only won 1 title with Lazio.

don't read too much into that game.. or even the one on wed's wait till the season starts.. need to get rif of Phil Neville though he gave the ball away for the second goal and was hus usual rubbish self.. plus he got 50,000 for that

Would rather play with 10 men than bring him on.. No wonder Scholes quit England when he was played with Phil Neville after 60 mins of a match..

Was a rough few weeks there with only friendlies to watch but at least the season is upon us. Just hope Viera goes to Real and then the Arsenal team starts to break up.. remember Ajay in 95 after they won the European Cup could be something similar to that.. eps if Wenger goes and then they have to start fielding English players instead of being the Monaco of London

Pronounced 'Champions', I think you'll find. Not much chance of Wenger going, he's got the best youth team in Europe and a new stadium to get opened the year after next, so United will have to put up with the occasional humiliation, at least until they stop buying nuggets like Bellion and Forlan.

I think the occasional humiliation is a price worth paying to watch us retain our premiership this year!

what i was eluding to was that the team is made up of loads of french players as is the youth team as well.

If Viera goes and Lunjberg follows suit then so could some of the other star players as well as I don't think you would retain the trophy without those two. You've never retained it yet when you have strengthened your team so when you lose players it will be ven harder. Wengers contract only has about a year to run and if alot of players have gone by then he could consider moving on as well. Something he himself has already stated.

If you have the best youth team in Europe why didn't you win the FA Youth Cup last year ??

Ljungberg isn't going anywhere, Vieira well might, but there's so much media lunacy I really can't tell.

Quote:

I'm talking about players under 21 already fit for first team football, not kids prizes. We did win it back to back in 2000/1 and lots of the players from that era are still at the club including Bentley, Stack, Hoyte, Svard, Pennant and Aliadiere. You'll note that three of them are English, one Irish (but London born) and only one French. Four played United at the weekend, one's on loan to a Premiership club, one's on loan to a club that's in the UEFA cup this season.

So don't look at who won it last year, look who won it about 3 years ago. I seem to recall a certain United side won it in 1992.

we have both won it twice.. no details on full sides though.. Wenger does seem to have a knack of signing young french players.. don't forget he used to work in the french youth school and managed Henry when he was at Monoca. If he hadn't worked with some of these players before and knew what he could do not sure if he would be as good if he didn't already have this inside knowledge..

Bellion is rubbish i'm afraid and not worth the 2 million we payed for him.. Don't think he will ever fit in and we have better players in our youth team..

As for Forlan he should go. The thing is he does have the ability look at his volley against Chelsea the other year.. Think if he went to Spain where he had more time on the ball and a less physical game then he could get 20 goals a season... mind you he should go for that haircut alone..

Re: [Merged] - Football talk

have been thinking about this the past few days.

When clubs get a foreign manager in the prem they go the country they are from as they know the players better and sign loads of players from there. When you get English or Scottish managers they go abroad and buy loads of players from there as well. That's why there are very few English players comming through at the moment. Even at youth level the clubs can now sign foreigners. Both United and Arsenal have youth teams that are littered with foreigners. I remember reading a few months ago that either UEFA or FIFA were going to try and bring in a law that limited the amount of foreigners but don't see anything happening.

One of the reasons I hate the EU and Jean-Marc Bossman. It was that case that got rid of the foreigners rule and ruined the national leagues in all the European states. I remember the Lison Lions of 67.. 11 players all from Glasgow who took on the best Europe had to offer and one the European Cup for Celtic. Don't think that will ever happen again until the authorities step in and do something about the rules.

I'd like to see something whereby clubs could have a squad of up to 25 or 30 players of which 70% had to be the clubs home nationality. That way you could still sign foreigners but would have to have a home grown core of English players.

Best result of the night by far, the Irish League side Shelbourne holding Deportivo to a 0-0 draw.:tu:

Wouldn't it be great if they could sneak a goal in the next game and get a 1-1 draw or something

Re: [Merged] - Football talk

Here we go again, Man Utd, nearly but not quite.
Losing today to Chelsea 1-0, a good performance, but lacking in the final third of the pitch.

United need another proven striker to be of any threat to Arsenal this season.
I think that striker needs to be a certain Wayne Rooney.
I can't imagine many premiership defences being able to handle Giggs, Nistelrooy, Rooney, Ronaldo up front, followed by Smith, Scholes, Keane in the middle of the park, with Neville, Ferdinand and Silvestre at the back, with Howard or Carroll in goal, with Fortune, Fletcher, Saha and Miller on the bench.
Ole is out for another year so we are lead to believe, so alas, I think his Man Utd career is over.

Diego can go to Spurs or whoever wants him

I think Rooney or a similar proven striker would make all the difference.

Arsenal look like they have carried on where they left off last season, looking quite invincible, so if we are to stand a chance in winning the premiership crown this season, we need to buy.

I know it's early days, but they are my thoughts anyway.

It's really annoying when we definately play better than the opposition yet still lose. Word has it that Defoe might be a target soon. I don't see Rooney joining though, not until at least next year.

the problem we had was we had Fortune in the team. he can't even play well on the left wing which is meant to be his position let alone at left back. How Fergie keeps him in the team i'll never know.. We were better in parts of the match but their keeper never had to make a save all match. We were abit lacking in the final third and a draw was prob a fair result.

Our bench was terrible though who did we have to bring on to change a game ? Giggs was poor as well.. he has, or had, so much quality but you just never see it any more..

Need another striker but thought Miller played well. JOS was poor in midfield even though i thought he done well midweek,

Nice to see another team roll over when they play arsenal.

Roll on sat when I got tickets for the Norwich game.. hopefully we will give them a good thumping.

Re: [Merged] - Football talk

Don't need him at the Arsenal, he wouldn't get in the team. Possibly he could clean Fabregas' boots, I'm not sure there's anyone else worthy.

What's the time on the Clock End clock? Five past anybody. Chelsea should try giving the opposition a few goals start sometime, would liven up their dull matches no end.

10 players on two goals this season, 4 of them from the Arsenal. None, funnily enough, from Man Utd or Chelsea. Then again, those two have scored five goals fewer than Arsenal between them.

Don't worry, nffc, you can say you support a side that has a joint record with Arsenal. And you lent us your kit back in the day, which is why we wear red, so ta for that too :)

You'll have it outright on Weds though, you lot were superb today.

Rather it went to you lot than manUre though, and it's taken such an excellent football team a long time (and a lot of £s) to break it.

Our side was assembled on a shoestring, yet immediately after promotion we won the league, league cup twice, charity shield (5-0, still a record) and the european cup twice.

Re: [Merged] - Football talk

All of which is a hell of a lot of effort and skill in order to have enough money to relieve us of Kevin Campbell. Cheers for that!

Pointless fact - Forest are the only side Ian Wright ever get sent off against playing for Arsenal. He tried hard against everybody else, mind you...

Superb today apart from Cygan who deserves to bend down and have his baldy head slapped by every Gooner in Highbury. Roll on Campbell (S) and perhaps the odd clean sheet might turn up. Won't be as exciting.

Boro look to have bought better than United in the summer - five goals in two games and Hasselbaink looking as bad as ever (until he scores, the git). Top six I reckon.

Two games in to the new season and less goals than the Arse - absolutely unforgiveable  :D

Mind you, I guess the fact that United started the season without 8 key players (and more importantly, only one 1 senior striker - Alan Smith - I refuse to acknowledge 'Donkey' Diego Forlan as anything other than the world's most expensive doorstop) is wasted on most Arse fans....

1- Kev Campbell: give the guy credit, he was OK when he wasn't injured. When he got good Irving S*holar decided to flog him to Trabzonspor for 3m (incidentally a 0.5m profit on the 2.5m we paid) against the wishes of both the player and harry bassett... the money from that was from the sale of Collymore to Liverpool (record 8.5m) of which the other money went on Chris Bart-Williams (2.5m from Sheff Weds) and Andrea Silenzi (1.5m from Torino) - the latter despite being Maradona's strike partner in Napoli couldn't "hit a back door with a banjo".

2- Ian Wright: remember it well, we were last in the league having not won since opening day (ironically a Campbell hat-trick 3-0 win v Coventry), Arsenal were top. And we're talking December as well. Arsenal take the lead and we think "oh here we go again" before an Alfie Haaland double overturns it for a 2-1 win to the Reds. Not bad, considering it was Psycho's first game as manager and the night before when picking the team with his wife he forgot to pick a keeper (and had 11 outfielders) We did OK for the first 6 weeks of Pearce's tenure until S*holar brought in hoofer Bassett and then we didn't win until the end of the season and went down :( only for van Hooijdonk and Campbell to tear the first division apart the season after. And the rest is history.

This record is scaring the hell outta me. We have proved ourselfs now, won the title without being beaten and on wednesday i hope to beat the record but it keeps getting talked about. We play great football, we have equalled the longest unbeten record, but now i want to win the title without this bloody record

Let's not forget that the day this 'unbelievable' record was equalled was also the day that the Arse conceded 3 goals at home....not something that I'd consider should happen to a team as unbeatable as the Arse think they are. They're certainly a good side, but saturday proved that a team with a good enough defence to close their frontline down and a strong strikeforce can end the Arse's run, and best of all, at Highbury :D

whilst i admit the record equalling run is a superb acheivment and i think it will be broken on Wednesday night i don't think the team is as good as the Forest one. They won 2 European Cups as well during that spell and didn't buy in players with loads of money as they didn't have any. They were also all British or Irish as well.

Still well done to Arsenal but as a United fan hope you get beat soon :D

wasn't Henry bought for something like £12 million and Viera bought for about £6 million.

Also they soent a couple of million on Pires, Ljunberg, and Reyes although he only played a few games in the run.

Forrest didn't have that type of money to spend. Nor had Clough workde in the FA youth setup and so knew which young players to buy cheap.

They had also only just been promoted rather than being title challengers fir the past few seasons. That is why what Forrest did is better than what Arsenal did.

It's the same as say Palace who have just come up winning the league and European Cup twice
