Re: Science Fiction, Fantasy, and other TV Snippets

yeah, the film is widely accepted as a travesty. They tried to squeeze a whole season of the tv series into one film and you cant do it. Even though it is a cartoon for children it was so rich in story and characters. They skipped so much in the film and the only reason I understand what was going on is because I had seen the series.

I strongly strongly recommend it for everyone regardless of how old you are. The story is amazing and there are plenty of lmao moments as well.

BBC America to make a TV series based on Terry Pratchett’s "City Watch" books.

https://deadline.com/2018/10/terry-p...ca-1202492604/
Quote:

The Watch, based on Sir Terry Pratchett’s Discworld novels, has landed a series order at BBC America. The Killing Eve broadcaster has greenlit an eight-part series from BBC Studios, after Deadline revealed the project was in development in March.

The U.S. cable network describes the show as a “punk rock thriller” inspired by the City Watch subset of Discworld novels. The character-driven series centers on Terry Pratchett’s misfit cops as they fight to save a ramshackle city of normalized wrongness, from both the past and future in a perilous quest.

The Watch features many Discworld creations including City Watch Captain Sam Vimes, the last scion of nobility Lady Sybil Ramkin, the naïve but heroic Carrot Ironfoundersson, the mysterious Angua and the ingenious forensics expert Cheri together with Terry Pratchett’s iconic characterization of Death.

The latest in line for a reboot is The 4400.

The series ran four seasons on USA Network, and is being rebooted on The CW. The reboot will be co-written and executive produced by Taylor Elmore and Craig Sweeny (a writer on the original series) with Elmore serving as showrunner.

BBC Four has announced a special live 90-minute edition of the iconic science and technology programme Tomorrows World.

Quote:

Tomorrow’s World Live: For One Night Only will be broadcast this November and will endeavour to find out where British ingenuity sits today, and to take a nostalgic and entertaining look at some of the most fondly remembered technologies from the original series.

Led by much-loved Tomorrow’s World presenters Maggie Philbin and Howard Stableford, alongside Dr Hannah Fry, this special edition of the programme will delve into the archive and will look forward to discover the science and technology that will shape our future.

Re: Science Fiction, Fantasy, and other TV Snippets

Sweet, I heard rumours about that a while ago but they were unconfirmed. I thought that might also be why (although they deny it) all the Netflix series are being cancelled. It makes sense that Disney would want to bring everything together in one house and oversee production. The series' have their merits but they aren't as engrossing as AoS or the MCU and hopefully brining it back to Disney will remedy that.

Michelle Yeoh is in talks to reprise her Star Trek Discovery role of Captain Emperor Georgiou for a stand-alone CBS All Access series.

Still in the early planning stages, the spinoff looks likely to focus on a continuation of her Discovery Season 2 adventures in Starfleet’s Section 31 division. Did you ever watch Mars from NatGeo? It's a docudrama about the mission to Mars. I've just binged season 1 (2016) but Season 2 starts today set a few years later.

Re: Science Fiction, Fantasy, and other TV Snippets

I haven't started this season yet. As we have been have discussions about different things this year and people were asking for recommendations for good series to watch I said two or three times that there are so many good "older" series which I would gladly go back and watch and drop all current stuff. I ploughed through Buffy over summer, I started watching SG1 by accident last month and couldn't stop so I am half way through that I have just started watching Smallville. I have seen SG1 many many times but I have never gone back and rewatched Smallville from the start since it finished. Seeing Lana is like falling in love all over again :romance:

Long story short is that I am way behind on all current series atm because imho I am watching better series. When I have finished Smallville I want to do BSG.

Chris 10-12-2018 21:11

Re: Science Fiction, Fantasy, and other TV Snippets

BSG has shown up on Amazon Prime. It has gone on my watchlist. :tu:

I followed SG1 right through from start to finish on Pick this year. It’s still brilliant.

---------- Post added at 21:11 ---------- Previous post was at 21:08 ----------

Anyone got a clue how much Supergirl is likely to be allowed FTA on Pick? I’m enjoying watching it with my daughter but I’ve a sneaking suspicion they’ll stop at the end of season 2 at Christmas. I can’t quite believe they’ll show anything really recent on their freebie channel.

General Maximus 13-12-2018 22:09

Re: Science Fiction, Fantasy, and other TV Snippets

this is what does my nut in though. They wasted time making a BBC 3 and BBC 4 so why can't we basically have a US tv channel showing all the different current US series. I am not being bias because I am not just talking about the series we like and are discussing. I appreciate there needs to be something for everyone so you could put the daytime chat shows in there like Ellen and stuff but I honestly believe if you had a channel dedicated to the current prime time series like the DC series, Greys Anatomy, Homeland, etc and the rest of the stuff on the list in my tv series thread like NCIS and the cop procedurals it would probably be the most popular channel out there. Between mums, dads and kids, it would always be watched because there would always be something on somebody wants to watch.

This is where I think BBC shirk their responsibilities. They legally steal money from everybody in the country yet they do not provide content for everybody in the country.

Dodging a cancellation pink slip is typically a TV series’ biggest hurdle but that’s apparently not the case with Wynonna Earp. The series was renewed for a fourth season last July and work on the new episodes was presumably underway. According to reports, however, production has now been delayed due to financial challenges.

IDW Entertainment owns the rights to Wynonna Earp and pays the production costs. Like Space in Canada, Syfy pays a license to air the series. Deadline reports that Syfy had quietly renewed the series for seasons four and five last year and IDW is contractually obligated to deliver both.

“IDW is committed to continuing to tell the Wynonna Earp story,” IDW said in a statement. “Much like the fans, we are passionate about not only the series, but the comics, the characters and the overall message that the Wynonna Earp franchise carries. We are in the process of working out the details for how the Wynonna story will continue and will share new details very soon.”

Though a production start date has not been set, Syfy remains committed to the series. A statement from the cable channel reads “Syfy ordered season four of Wynonna Earp from IDW and is completely committed to the series. This has not changed.”

Yeah it is a bit of a slap in the face really when you have done them a favour and something which is pretty much unheard of and renewed it for 2 seasons.

Luke Perry passed away today. I know he was famous for quite a few roles such as Beverly Hills 90201 but the first time I saw him was in Jeremiah and that is what I remember him for even though I have seen him in a few minor roles since.

What’s going on with Wynonna Earp? According to The Hollywood Reporter, funding is not available for a fourth season of the Syfy TV show despite a renewal and plans for a fifth season.
Although Syfy has already renewed Wynonna Earp, it’s unclear if the series will ever produce a fourth season. According to THR, the show’s producer, IDW Entertainment, does not have enough funding to justify another season let alone two more seasons of Wynonna Earp.
How strange, I don't know how it all works but if the production company didn't have enough money to make another season you would think it would just close down. I don't understand how a company can exist on paper but not make anything. Syfy obviously thinks it is worth it financially so surely they could lend them the money knowing they'll get it back?

Just watching "Love, Death, & Robots" on Netflix - a series of short (10-20 minutes each) animations (of varying styles) of short stories by some of my favourite SF writers (Scalzi, Hamilton, Morgan, Reynolds, Kloos, amongst others).

Enjoyed the first 6, with 12 to go.

I think they’re waking up to the fact that a small number of headline grabbing original commissions doesn’t entitle them to be seen as equals with Netflix. When you go on Netflix everything you see is free to view. When you go on Amazon Prime the opening view looks great until you realise that most of it costs extra. Browsing for ‘included with Prime’ can become a bit of a chore and when you get to it, there isn’t nearly as much there.

But with BSG, Agents of SHIELD, Lost and now Farscape (and, slightly off topic, Glee, which I’m quite partial to) they’re beginning to take the whole box set thing seriously. All we need now is an equally serious approach to original commissions.
