Re: Starmer’s chronicles

We let a property out in Wokingham. We placed everything with a respected letting agent without knowing any of the ins and outs. We assumed everything was in order without giving it further thought. And so it was/is.

Much as the professional Reeves is to my utter distaste, this little pickle she's got into shouldn't bring the flogging that she is getting.

Well said, OB.

to quote kier Starmer "you can't be a law maker and a law breaker"

she knows all about this law she has campaigned for it

if she can break the law with no consequences then we all can do it

Looks like she is probably in the clear unless something else comes up. The letting agency explicitly told her they were applying the licence, only for the person making the promise to resign before they did. Leaving both Reeves thinking it was done, and the agency unaware of this.

The agency has apologised:

Quote:

"We alert all our clients to the need for a licence. In an effort to be helpful our previous property manager offered to apply for a licence on these clients' behalf, as shown in the correspondence.

"That property manager suddenly resigned on the Friday before the tenancy began on the following Monday.

"Unfortunately, the lack of application was not picked up by us as we do not normally apply for licences on behalf of our clients; the onus is on them to apply.

"We have apologised to the owners for this oversight.

"At the time the tenancy began, all the relevant certificates were in place and if the licence had been applied for, we have no doubt it would have been granted.

"Our clients would have been under the impression that a licence had been applied for. Although it is not our responsibility to apply, we did offer to help with this.

"We deeply regret the issue caused to our clients as they would have been under the impression that a licence had been applied for."

i've done a rough calculation on that and the answer is Bullshit, sounds like a bent lawyer is advising on this, any one know one?

It seems pretty simple to me.

The issue now is whether you think she should have double-checked that they actually did it.

it's her responsibility she's the land lord, i'm surprised she didn't blame Brexit

it's a good story worthy of a gold star in junior school story writing

Probably not, but maybe Hugh (as an admin on this forum) is just trying to clarify things, as your comment, and I quote “...sounds like a bent lawyer is advising on this....", could possibly be construed as being libellous.

In a letter to Sir Keir Starmer on Wednesday evening, she said "we were not aware that a licence was necessary".
"As soon as it was brought to my attention, we took immediate action and have applied for the licence," she wrote.

However, in a second letter to the PM on Thursday, Reeves said she had found correspondence confirming that the letting agent had told her husband a licence would be required and that the agency would apply for this on their behalf.
