It's because most people don't have a clue how to drive in the snow. So they wheel spin, and turn it to ice. Then the roads turn into a death trap.

This morning was ok, because there was very little traffic on the road. So the snow had time to melt rather than being packed down hard.

I gave myself an hour and a half to get to work this morning, but it only took half an hour, including a stop at the garage.

I kind of enjoy driving in the snow and once had to drive back from Ammanford South Wales to Liverpool on the A483 during blizzard, if you know the road then you will know that it is a fantastic road up the backbone of Wales.

Grit doesn't really start to work until it gets ground into the snow by the traffic

Only very fine snow but with the wind it soon piled up mate. ;)

I had an early night, so I didn't see any of it coming down, the amount was a bit of a surprise this morning though. If it was the wind I will take your word for it. I knew I shouldn't have had baked beans for tea :)

Well I'm only 30 miles from you. And to start with it was fine snow that was drifting. Then later on the wind dropped, and it came down very heavy.

Knowing Lewisham, that probably makes a nice change from drunks and grafitti artists peeing on them.... :D

and just for those who think gritting our road networks is straight-forward:

I'm sure it isn't straight forward. But neither is trying to drive an 18 tonne truck as fast as possible on untreated roads. In fact it really can be time to change your pants when you get there
