Im running sky fibre with a linksys e4200 - you can use any router as long as it runs DDWRT. Theres a guide how to swap it over on sky user

good news so in interim could use the dir615 and later a dir655 or 825 for gigabit.

Are you saying Sky's encryption has now been cracked to allow any 3rd party router as long as DDWRT can be used.

Well I wouldnt say cracked

but yeah any router you want, but it has to run DDWRT (I think tomato would also work, but im not sure)

But yeah... any router

Dont know how clued up you are, theres not really a step by step guide over there, I can make one with screenshots etc, if it would benefit you?

Hi Craig, if it's what I think it is then, you have to make alterations each time your IP addy changes, so I dont want to be messing around frequently or get ear ache of Mrs Pabs saying it's not working again, so for now I will wait till a full belt and braces fix has been tried and tested.

I appreciate the offer but I wouldnt want you to waste your time just yet :), regarding just how clued up am I, the answer is "not very much at all", apart from being able to make minor tweaks, set up qos, port forwarding etc that kind of stuff, thats about my limit of actual experience, all self taught :erm:.

I'm not a techy person really, In know just enough to be dangerous :D

Nope, you just add a line of code to your startup commands in DDWRT and it will do the work for you each time the router reboots. And in terms of IPs changing, sky is pretty much static based on MAC address very similar to Virgin

btw there isnt going to be a "a full belt and braces fix" - routers dont natively support MAC Encapsulated Routing

I just wish I could bin their crappy router as it's absolute bobbins and a real weak point in an otherwise strong chain.

This sounds oddly familiar in relation to a certain other ISP... :D

It's not encryption, it's just a new(er) standard that not many people are using yet.

You make it sound strait forward but you lost me at "nope", I don't want to derail this thread too much but would you be ok to take this to PM at some point in the future.

qas,,,,,,, it does sound somewhat familiar :D, and in all honesty it's not as bad as it could be, the sagemcom wireless range is OK, and it doesnt reboot or lock up, but I have had the odd corrupt download and when I start hosting large multiplayer matches on line with my buddies you can sense the router going into meltdown.

I get selected as host a lot these days (MW3 via xbox/PS3) but when this happens the router gets bogged down and the game plays like tripe for me, any other time it's fine so I'm being a tad harsh on it tbh.
