Freeview itself is free but people now want more and it is a nice option to be able to get channels such as History, Nickleodeon for £6.99p/m if you like or the notv channels such as sky1, disney ect for £4.99. The option is there if people want it. Technically Freeview is not free anyway as you have to pay for a tv license in order to watch Freeview.
A good thing about OD services is no tv license needed aslong as you do not watch or record live tv channels.

I get the impression that you don't fully understand YouView. No one is asking you to pay for Freeview channels. You pay for the extra IPTV channels (which are also on other pay TV services like VM) and you pay directly or indirectly for the YouView PVR.

Long story, explained here, basically YouView boxes can only currently decode IPTV signals sent by multicast. Third party channels independent of a customer's ISP are sent by unicast which the boxes can't decode. Hopefully the boxes will be enabled in the future, the link included a response from YouView in 2012 stating that this functionality was planned for the future.

VUTV is available on none youview boxes too, you do not need Youview, talktalk or bt to get VUTV i know this as my cousin has a freeviewHD tv with internet connection and she can get VUTV, her provider is EE also WUTV offer a 14 day free trial.
Aslong as the freeviewHD box is compatable then it will recieve VUTV no problem (aslong as your bb is over 2mbs). Wether or not bt or talktalk provide the unicast service to Vutv i do not know but you certainly do not need BT or Talktalk to get it.

Also @muppetman i'm glad i'm not the only one who has a phone that seems to do what it wants :p:

What I meant to clarify is that YouView cannot receive live channels from companies like VuTV, Motors TV and Sky's Now TV as these are sent by unicast.
It can only decipher channels sent by multicast. The only two companies that can send this are BT and TalkTalk via fibre to their respective subscribers.

They're not better or worse, they're different products.

As for the posters who claim to know the channels coming, why not post the channel names?

Some years back I was told that History HD was set to launch by my source and posted the info just for that not to happen.

The new channels list is just the list of channels that MAY launch in 2014.

No info on when or Package news was given.

i think this time last year we had got onto about 3 different threads and so far we're still on the first!

it is a ridiculously large amount of potential channels. i'm having trouble even guessing them!

We was just on Vol. 2 this time last year.

'We' referred to the Virgin Media viewers to whom this site is dedicated. Do you really have to pick over words so meticulously? I'm afraid you are getting it spectacularly wrong.

But we like you ;)

;)Shopping channels! is that as good as it's getting lately, I'd be glad to see the back of all of them, waste of space.

Media news:

The Arrow relaunch on Sky.

Global Radio has given The Arrow it arrow back on Sky replacing the soon to axe Real Radio.

Channel no longer broadcasting - you don't say Virgin!.

The EPG on both Bid and Price Drop has been updated to say 'Channel no longer broadcasting' but that "Come on Virgin" song is still broadcasting on Bid.

Virgin Media viewers are trying to compare themselves directly to a company? I know you're an idiot on many levels but surely even you aren't this dim.
