Astaire leads home Ryan one-two.

Astaire put up an ultra-game performance when making all the running to land the Vision.ae Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket.

Winner of the Gimcrack Stakes on his previous start, the Kevin Ryan-trained colt gained a couple of lengths on his rivals when accelerating two furlongs out, but the 8-1 shot was pushed hard in the final furlong by his stablemate Hot Streak.

He was still half a length ahead at the line, however, with Justice Day a length and a half further away in third, while Aidan O'Brien's 2-1 favourite Great White Eagle never threatened and was a big disappointment.

Thak takes Rockfel title.

Al Thakhira stepped up on her Yarmouth debut success to run out a convincing winner of the Group Two Vision.ae Rockfel Stakes at Newmarket.

The 5-1 shot, trained by Marco Botti, was always travelling well for Martin Harley as Thewandaofu set the pace.

Once Harley pressed the button, Al Thakhira went clear to score by three and a quarter lengths from Blockade, with Valonia third and the odds-on favourite Lightning Thunder only fourth.

Soft ground expected at Ascot.

http://www.attheraces.info/article.a...e&sub=&day=Mon

Ground conditions are expected to be on the soft side for Qipco British Champions Day at Ascot on Saturday.

Clerk of the course Chris Stickels described the going as good to soft, soft in places after he walked the track on Sunday.

The course has already absorbed 16 millimetres of rain since Thursday and the forecast for the week is an unsettled one.

"It's a mixture of good to soft and soft today. We've had eight millimetres so far and it's still raining at the minute. We've had 16mm since Thursday after a dry week before that. The wet weather we've had has turned it on the soft side," said Stickels.

Camelot bows out.

Last year's 2000 Guineas and dual Derby winner Camelot has been retired, owners Coolmore have announced.

Trained by Aidan O'Brien, the four-year-old fell short of his best form this season, winning just one of his three starts.

Camelot was being trained for the Breeders' Cup Turf next month but was found to be lame this morning.

O'Brien outlines Champion options

Aidan O'Brien could rely on either Kingsbarns or Ruler Of The World in Saturday's Qipco Champion Stakes at Ascot after admitting to fears about ground conditions for both Declaration Of War and Magician.

The Ballydoyle handler left the quartet of runners in this weekend's 10-furlong Group One at Monday's confirmation stage, with Kingsbarns, Declaration Of War and Magician also among the entries for the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on the same card.

Quote:

The Queen's Gold Cup winner Estimate remains in contention for a return to Ascot on Saturday in the QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup.

Trained by Sir Michael Stoute, the filly has not been seen since her battling victory in front of Her Majesty at the Royal meeting and she also started her season at Ascot in May when coming clear in the Sagaro Stakes.

Sirius shoots for Sprint glory

http://www.attheraces.info/article.a...e&sub=&day=Tue

Quote:

Dean Ivory feels Sirius Prospect has plenty in his favour as the five-year-old bids to improve on last year's third in the Qipco British Champions Sprint Stakes at Ascot on Saturday.

The Gone West gelding tends to be at his peak in the autumn, relishes cut in the ground and has shown he acts on the Berkshire track. One of his career-best performances came in this Group Two prize over six furlongs 12 months ago when he was third to Maarek, and Ivory reports his charge to be in the form of his life.

Jim Bolger's 2000 Guineas hero has been successful at the Berkshire track in the Coventry Stakes and the St James's Palace Stakes, and bids to make it three in Europe's richest mile race, sponsored by Qipco.

Jim Bolger has strong reservations about the rain-softened ground for Trading Leather ahead of the Qipco Champion Stakes at Ascot on Saturday.

The County Carlow trainer reports the Irish Derby hero to be in good health, but would prefer conditions to be drier.
