Mandriva 2009.0 (Cooker) RC1 with a hacked Superkaramba system monitoring theme.

That's clear then? ;)

It's the release candidate of Mandriva Linux for 2009. The panel on the right is a system monitor which you can customise via a configuration/script file to show all sorts of things...

I asked my son whether he thought I could conquer Linux and he just burst out laughing and patted me on the head.

My desktop at the moment reflects my attraction to bright shiny objects and an uncluttered workspace..

4.1.1 has just come out, it's getting a lot better. Quite stable, haven't had plasma crash yet with this one...

That's started me thinking about what I use to keep my desktop as clear as possible.

I don't know if this has been mentioned on here before but this is what I call a 'magic folder' which pops up from the side of your screen.

Create a new folder on your desktop. Now click on this and drag it to the side of your desktop hard up against the edge. Release it there and it will form a band down the side of the screen.

Now right-click inside that band and set auto-hide on. You should find it vanishes away and only reappears when you mouse to the edge of the screen.

Cut and paste any shortcuts from your desktop into that folder. They will vanish from the desktop but still be instantly available from the pop-out menu.

:)

I have found that Vista makes it easy to keep my desktop clear. The quick search option on the Start Menu only needs a couple of letters entering to locate any programme, hardware, file etc that I want to use and pinning the recycle bin to the start menu finishes the clean sweep.
