The TV channels were neglected for a while by VM but that is no longer the case.

What they do need to sort out are the essentials of:
- Network coverage: in hand
- New box: in hand
- 4G mobile: unknown
- wifi network via Superhub: status unknown, launched in some LGI countries

Then desirables would be:
- Remaining HD channels
- Amazon Prime
- Price freeze
- 4k carriage announcements

I have something to say but I'm gonna keep my mouth shut for now as nobody else has mentioned it on here....

More chance platting treacle than a price freeze.

It was a statement of fact, channels come and go all of the time. For example, Blaze will arrive shortly on Freeview. Again, it's not my opinion that Blaze will appear, it actually will appear.

Apologies for any confusion and I didn't mean to cause any offence. I intended to get across that it was your opinion that VM were not proactive and I suggested some ways in which they might be seen as proactive.

Agreed, but I can't see any other reason as to why E! would not be on VM except money eg it's not technological, it's not that the two companies haven't done other deals.

Incorrect| As I stated previously, the only way a channel can appear on Freeview is to negotiate a contract with one of the multiplex operators, generally Arqiva (for COM5-COM8) or to a lesser extent SDN, which is limited in that it only operates a single multiplex (COM4). There is no freedom of entry to Freeview, in your terms, Arqiva and SDN are the "gatekeepers" for their respective multiplexes and channels have to negotiate with one of these multiplex operators. The PSB multiplexes are totally closed platforms and don't make space available to independent broadcasters.

I think we just have different opinions of the definition of an open platform.

Thanks for an interesting debate. :)

Ha ha. Only because VM have blacklisted you from rejoining. :) But I do wonder how VM will tackle the roll-out based on some opinions of the current hardware.

It's not an opinion, it's fact. But I'm choosing not to say anything currently as I'm not sure it's public knowledge. But it will be shortly :)

Ok but that wasn't really an opinion either just an observation based on the difference between VM obtaining Universal HD and BT obtaining Universal HD PLUS E! HD. You did suggest ways in which VM might be seen as proactive, mentioning UKTV on-demand content. We would disagree here I'm afraid. For a long period of time VM didn't carry UKTV's on-demand content, now it is grabbing any content it can get after falling behind other providers. Again, more reactive than proactive, they could have obtained UKTV content at a much earlier stage.

I think we just have different opinions of the definition of an open platform.
Traditionally a closed platform operator exclusively sells its service to the end user and with an open platform, individual broadcasters can sell their content direct to the end user. Freeview doesn't sit well with either model, neither the platform operators nor the broadcasters are selling directly to the end user. The concept is better suited to pay-tv than to FTA services. When DTT carried broadcast pay-tv services it was either via OnDigital/ITV Digital or via TopUp TV, both of which were closed platforms.

As far as FTA services go, with Sky the broadcaster can arrange an independent upload to Astra and then simply pay Sky for an EPG slot. With Freeview, the broadcaster has to arrange a carriage contract with a multiplex operator, it can't independently load its service onto DTT. The Freeview scenario is closer to that of cable, where the broadcaster has to arrange a carriage contract with VM, than to the Sky/Astra situation.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016) Vol 2

Everything i have been reading i agree 100% with. Virgin claim they are serious about mobile then why have they not got 4G? They claim they want to offer the best on demand content yet they were miles ahead of Sky in that respect a few years ago, now look at the gap. They hugely disrespect their customers by giving the loyal customers price increases to fund better discounts for new subscribers. Don't get me started on the TIVO or the fact that 7 months after release they still have not got support for the Samsung Galaxy S7 or Edge with its Android app. Smaller 1 man operations can get this sorted so why can't a huge company like this? I sent them a tweet asking about it and all i got was we are working on it. Im sorry that is not good enough when my bill has gone up 40% in 2 years.

When i phoned to cancel, they did nothing to even try and persuade me to stay and i have had no contact since. They are quite happy to ring me every few weeks trying to sell me Sky Sports, or a mobile that i have told them many times im under contract elsewhere and would not take a Virgin mobile as they do not offer 4G.
