No need to apologise Bill I think I know you well enough now to know you would only want to help the customers for the best. Must admit I do like my SACM. Small neat leaves me more space on the desk for college books. Might not be able to monitor it through the router but still working on that front to get it working.

I'm in Warrington, which means, I believe, from reading through this thread, that I go through Baguely, which does have proxy servers enabled currently. Is that right?

I've done a traceroute on my own IP - I used the one at mailbox.net.uk, which gives this as the last 3 steps:

Can someone tell me what core and cam mean? I've noticed these mentioned before in the thread.

Also, how do I do the traceroute to http://www.ntlworld.com ? And would people recommend a certain website to do it from?

Also, I could do with educating myself a bit more - I know all these terms and what they indicate but I don't think I actually know exactly what traceroute means, for example. Is there a good introduction site somewhere by any chance?

Er... yeah, so there's the thick newbie post out of the way. Someone's going to point me to a really obvious FAQ I missed now, I can tell...

Core has its normal meaning: the central core router for the Baguley region. CAM = Cable Access Module (and DAM = Dialup Access Module, LAM = Leased-line Access Module).See http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d...raceroute.html

Of course I can comment ;) I never said they don't make a difference - I said they arn't vital and they make less of a difference now that many sites are not static. I don't think many people use streaming media yet.

Do you have some bandwidth stats you can share with us to show one way or the other ?

Said stats would be commercially confidential - what sort of returns do you see from webcaches at Experian (if any exist?!).

Thats a bit unfair not sharing stats then asking for other peoples stats, would have thought you would have some form of Benchmark.

If you look at the IEE website and search you might be able to find out some information.

PEM of course is correct and as said before the cost of maintainance contracts and intial provisioning of the equipment will be drivers in assessing the use of proxies.

Would have thought any company would have looked at this in the ISP field

Yes we do use them (but not for the same reasons - mainly for access control and content checking). However they are not run by my division and I am not aware of any stats from them.

Methinks I'm going to leave this thread alone now, popular opinion seems to be that I'm either a) A liar, or b) An idiot, and members here seem to know more about ntl's operations than I do, and won't believe what I say without me breaking NDA and posting stats, which are right now none of your business. As you illustrated pem caches hit rate won't be public knowledge among your company, and you are IT meister - why should your ISP be any different? While complaining about your ISP it seems to be a common thing the demands for information - do you ask your electricity supplier where your electricity comes from, what power station generated it, do you ask your gas supplier where the gas was drawn from, where it was refined, or a petrol station where the oil was drilled and refined, and how? Anyone going to move to Sky and BT and phone up Sky and ask about the transponders on the Astra satellite network, or phone BT and ask about the finer points of ATM backhauls to their exchanges, or what LAC and LNS is being used, the specifications of said devices, ask your ISP what transit they use? Is it really any of your business so long as a reasonable service is provided?

That's not a popular viewpoint, but it's true. When we mess up, fair enough expect us to fix it. When things work, what's the problem?

Th'Eng - anti-ntl drivel, and very short sighted. Think about the Broadband Plus content for a start, various streaming sites on there, think about the future as well. Of course it's easier to sit there smug and santimonious now - if you really are all that why aren't you extremely loaded running your own super-efficient ISP, rather than staying with ntl for the sake of a few quid a month in retention offers? Back to the original point I'm still yet to receive a PM complaining about Baguley's caches and asking for assistance with them, a day later.

Perhaps you could clarify here - if you are directing this at me then you are well out of order, I have not called nor implied you are either of those things, not have I specifically mentioned NTL, just commented on proxies in general. You bought up the subject of stats, not me.

Do you mean do ADSL customers have to rely on proxys like the NTL cache proxys.. no i dont

I dont have an isp mask as i'm aware of just a static ip address which is part of the ADSL package.

I've replied to this in private, not specifically mentioning you by the way, however what you said could be taken as referring to ntl rather than web caches in general. There are good reasons why they are there. Apologies if I have given you the wrong impression or offended, wasn't my intention.
