it's available in Baguley as far as I know - if not automatic you should be able to order it via customer services.

I rang NTL, I'm only going to get 5MB on my Samsung Box unless I pay £50 for a modem..see:
http:\\www.ntlworld.com\stb
I said put me through to disconections, they told me they would waive the £50 fee, they put me back through to customer services and I have arranged a date to add a cable modem for free.

This is only two days worth of Data on my testing, but the trend is quite clear to see, cannot test during the day as I am at work :(

Got to say it is def getting better since last week even at peak time, notice ADSL Guide is always low compared to the others..

my ambit 120 modem suffered a data blackout again today at about 10pm.. had to do a hard reset.

Anyone else with this modem having these probs since the upgrade??

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

You could say that....

I've had their 1mb and 3mb service and always had full speeds.

When the upgrade happened, during the day my speed is from 3mb to 8mb up and down.

From about 7 in the evening the connection get worse, 5mb then as the night goes on down to 1mb and lower.

I'm currently getting 1mb speeds right now from usenet, and usnet always maxed out my connection.

Wish i never got the upgrade now, as i use my connection at night mostly, xbox live is a nightmare.

Just to clear up some stuff:

I called ntl today and asked them to upgrade me from 2Mb to 10Mb they said "Okay" and i hung up.. i rebooted my cable modem (the blue one i got when i first got the net) and changed from USB to ETHERNET and tested my downlosd speed:
result:

As you can see its running rather quickly, i have had no problems at all. it was so easy. if your having problems just take a look at your setup at home, something will be causing them (DONT use USB!!!)

EDIT: I have just download stuff via usenet at 1235KBps, damn this kicks bottom!

Here is my story...
Monday Rang CS they said since i have a stb i will only get around 5mb unless i spend £50 on a new modem. So after a wing they said they would sell me one for £25 but until i get one they will enable me to get 5mb.

Wensday still no 5mb pulling my usual 3mb max from Ftp/speed test sites.
Rang CS again Indian women told me to go to www.ntlworld.com/stb then put phone down. That link is rubbish just tells you all about it and a form to fill in for the new modem.
Rang CS again said i didnt want a new box as cant be botherd messing around with my router and xbox again 5mb will be fine. But i havent still got it. Placed me on hold for 5mins then said i need to fill the form in for the new modem i said i dont want the new modem,.In the end was advised to fill the form in when they come to fit a new modem tell them u dont want it but ask the enginer to enable 5mb on my stb,,
I have and CS seem to have no idea what is going on,,,:td:

I just got off the phone from NTL an hour back, they pointed me to the web page that says £50 if i want upgrade now etc... The polite lady at CS didn't mention the charge at all when she showed me, she was just showing me that my STB is capable of 5mbps only. Anyway they are coming round on Saturday to install my upgrade for free lol :)

Not good sign it is removed then. It suggests it is no longer valid and if it was raised it wouldnt be a good idea to publish the new number. Just my thought.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

This forum has been a great help since I received my £50 letter from NTL yesterday. I've been reading with interest the various ways you guys have been trying to get NTL to supply the 10Mbs they promised for free.

Here's my experience:
This morning I 'phoned NTL CS and explained that I wasn't happy. First the woman on the other end didn't know about a £50 charge, then when she asked someone else she said that was true. I complained that it wasn't acceptable. She agreed but there was nothing she could do.

I waited until this afternoon and tried again. I asked about a SACM instead and was told that they can't authorise that and I would have to speak to Sales. I asked to be put through to Disconnections and she said that she really couldn't authorise this and recommended I to speak to Sales. So I agreed. When I got through to Sales I explained the situation to the guy and said how ridiculous it was and asked for either a STB upgrade for free or a SACM for free. He instantly arranged for a SACM to be installed (he said next Wednesday, but I wanted the Friday) at no charge. He gave me my PIN and I confirmed there would be no charge for the SACM or for installation. He said there was no charge.

Bingo! :)

It pays to try this approach (as others have) and it's all thanks to you guys. Cheers.

Not to mention my immensely ****e fluctuant pings to my gateway ... so much for 10mbit :/

Well tonight is the absolute worse it has ever been here speed tests indicate
that i am on 300k, pings are timing out and packet loss all over the place. just rung tech support and to be honest it was a waste of time and was politely told that it is going to be like this a lot more due to the 10mb upgrades.

Well, i'm in Darlington, County Durham, and i am getting 10mb through my NTL:Home 100 no problem, except between the ours of 19:00 and 22:00, where it drops of to around 6mb :(
I contacted CS, and they said that their engineers are carrying out tests etc and everything should be sorted by the end of the year.
Lets hope so

It's called contention I'm afraid, as the max speeds go higher the difference between them and the minimum speeds get bigger and bigger.

Unless you are paying for 10Mbit 100% of the time you can't really complain too much.

Well i hope its sorted out in the end i'm not usually one to complain about NTL in all the time i have been with them all my probs have been sorted quick and efficently. I more or less expected this to happen as soon as the upgrades kicked in, this was the part i was not looking forward to

Lets hope things improve soon. Not sure if they will replace the Terrayon modem, though i might try them and see what happens :)

Why is Tech Support Quoting then the LOWEST you should go is 2mbit speed, I am guessing that the max number per UBR divided into number of users =2mbit if everybody is using there connection. What is the point of paying for 10mbit if most of the time it comes in at 1mbit or slows (like mine used to be) - like I said earlier - still waiting for somebody from Inisde NTL to quote me some figures :)

But contrary to some remarks on this forum, I would point you to the registration link to make an appointment to upgrade your STB/Modem where you can arrange the change over. I have 3M/bits STB, and they say the later Samsung box which was changed from Pace quite some time ago only supports up to 5M/bits.

Speeds seem to definitly be varying around the country. However, i have only got my max speed so far on usenet, with about 4 threads at once, then i can get 1250kb/s, most other places aren't dishing stuff out to me that fast, so you should post where you're trying to download from so others can compare.

If you know how, try to start a few downloads on a newsgroup, then you know for sure what the max your connection can go.

Other FTP, Speed Tests, etc can be unaccurate, it's known for sure that newsgroups go your Max Conn speed so try that out.

I know this is the 10MB thread, but, in fact, there are now 4 tiers - up to 1MB, up to 2MB, up to 5MB (stb customers only) and up to 10MB. Two things which are strange about this:-

1) The cost of the 5MB tier is the same as that of the 10MB tier.
2) All upgrades from one tier to another are free of charge EXCEPT 5MB to 10MB, which is subject to a £50 upgrade fee.

Anyone else think this is strange?

Some of us have been quoted a free upgrade from STB to SACM by talking to sales, before the letter arrived.

As I see it, I'm paying for the top tier and have been since BB with NTL began (as a home user). I would expect to remain on the top tier because that's what I want and that's what I'm paying for.

My Pace box was swopped out for a Samsung when I requested the (free) upgrade to 3Mbps (from 1.5Mbps), free of charge - I was/am paying the premium price for a fast connection.

I have requested the upgade to 10Mbps so I really expect a free upgrade again. The fact that the delivery service is different shouldn't be my problem. I'm still paying the premium price - I want the premium service.

That all sounds a bit bolshy when I read it back, it isn't meant to be like that, just calm, firm and polite.

JohnHorb 10-12-2005 09:07

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

Just to add to that. NTL personnel have repeatedly made the point on here that we are paying for a service. How NTL deliver that service (e.g. whether through a tatty old refurbished Pace box or a brand new Sammy) is up to them. This argument cuts both ways.

Well just had the blue NTL 250 installed and now on 10mb. Woohoo. Spoke to customer services and confirmed that they had now cancelled my stb connection as I do not want to be charged for both. Probably because that's what they were given as a figure.

I can 100% guarantee you that if everyone were maxing their connection at the same time you wouldn't get 2Mbit, however everyone is never maxing their connection.

Unless of course ntl make so much money out of internet services now that they can afford to give a 5k card to less than 200 users (assuming a 2 downstream card) - not likely :)

I certainly could tell you what the planning guidelines were aiming for as far as user density and users per downstream goes, I'm just not going to :)

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

My Modem was installed yesterday, after a lot of hassle (5 phone calls and endless queing) it works, I presmued that they would auto cancel my stb broadband as I'm now switched to SACM, but I guess with NTL I should never presume - I'm not ringing them again though, yesterday was enough !

Every thing seems cool, except broadband plus, which now seems to think I'm no longer a member, ho hum..

I'm getting 1.1 meg from Euro sites and about 650k from US ones on a single stream, which seems pretty good to me - I did tweak my RWIN which raised the US downloads from 550-650 but that seems to be the limit for a single stream from America, can anyone else get higher than that from the USA in one stream ?

cheers

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

Sorry if this has been said before (as this thread is HUGE)

What amazes me is that they went ahead rolling out Samsung Boxes for people to be upgraded to 1.5Mb and I don't think they even looked into the future with this. I mean, it can only go an extra 3.5Mb, is that a sound investment?. It seems like a stupid move by them as all they have done is create more work for themselves.

Instead of upgrading us to Samsung boxes they should have given us a seperate modem in the first place and that would have saved them (and us) the hassle.

I'm still on 3Mb. When I rang I got the feeling they didn't want to put me up to 5Mb and seemed insistant that I fill in an online form to get them to upgrade me to 10Mb.

I'm not expecting it until January now, I remember what a pain it was to get them to upgrade me to the Samsung box.

I do like the samsung boxes though, nicer than the Pace boxes.

Anyone else think this is strange?

Its not the case of 5mb being a tier, just that the stb is incapable of a faster connection. In effect you are receiving 10mb but the stb is restricting this to the 5mb. I agree though that its unfair to make stb users pay £50 for a sacm, its like existing customers are being penalised

Ahem! People on the 1MB and 2MB tiers are receiving 10MB, but their modems are restricting this to 1 or 2MB respectively (via the config file). I don't see the difference. As NTL people keep pointing out (quite rightly), we are paying for the service, not the delivery equipment, so if they are providing an up to 10MB service, they should provide the equipment to receive it. If they are providing an up to 5MB service, they should be open and say so, and price it accordingly.

Why do they even supply modems at all? What is wrong with Buying them online and you choosing what to buy, how much to pay and so forth. ADSL ISP normally give you Free some crappy modem but at least you can buy a router / modem to suit your needs. This would then stop them having to PAY people to collect them when people terminate the account and so forth. I am sure there is a reason why they supply them and not sell them and maybe even then people would complain that they bought Modem XXX and now it wont get the full speed yet people who bought Older Routers with 10mbit ports seem happy enough to go and buy a new one.

One the things that is pretty standard in IT:

Everything gets Better, cheaper as time goes on - This also Includes the Equipment NTL Use to supply the connection (that 5K card that was mentioned).

To avoid loads of support calls from people who bought dodgy ebay modems, and for security reasons (no username and password on UK cable networks, authorisation is done based on MAC address).

To allow people to use any modem means having to run PPPoE a la AOL over cable modem.

They don't collect the SACMs anyway, not really worth it for a few quid of hardware.

EDIT: Time for a part 4 pls moderation chaps. :)

EDIT2: That 5k price is a substantial discount on the list price, and a bulk price - these cards will of course be cheaper in the future however ntl likely bought a huge amount of cards in bulk to obtain that price - the single unit cost you're talking over twice that. In short it still isn't feasible to have enough bandwidth available to guarantee 2Mbit to every customer on a cable area so pretty please don't worry yourself about exact contention ratio and planning :)

Also things get better yes, but cable is a bit different on that score, DOCSIS 2 line cards go down in price because DOCSIS 3 line cards are made to replace them in the market and cost more than the DOCSIS 2 cards do at present to sting the early adopters a bit.

My cable comes from the white box on the wall to a splitter then one into the digibox and one into the modem.

As has been mentioned before. All speeds will be upgraded to 10MB by next year. the 3MB customers are getting upgraded to 10MB this month and then 2MB by early next year and the 1MB by later on next year.

2mbit would mean 5:1 contention ration if only we be so lucky :)

30:1 would mean around 330kbit if everyone was downloading at once.

Free upgrade as in NTL won't charge you an admin fee for upgrading which they tried to introduce when the new speeds first came out.

Bolton, Manchester area here.

I've been regularly rebooting the SACM since the ntl Christmas card arrived and am still on the 3Mb service. I rang customer services a few days ago and was told that I was on the 10Mb upgrade list and should receive it either later that day or by the end of the year. Now that is most definately a fob off. The lady I spoke to also said that engineers were working on upgrading areas in stages. Bolton was on the upgrade for equipment list months ago!

The upgrade page always tells me I'm on the maximum connection and after restarting the SACM numerous times over the last few weeks, I still remain on 3Mb.

Modem is an ntl home 200 and I've tried this both through the router and direct to one pc.

Guess it's just a waiting game although I must say a very frustrating one.

If your not bothered about wireless, you could just to what i did, and upgrade from the v1 (sliver) to v3 (white). That will give you a 10/100mbps WAN port. You should really look here - http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/sh...ad.php?t=38424

Hi EZ, There is something not quite accurate with what your friend told you.
Have a look at this link...which I have already posted recently
http://www.ntlworld.com/toolsservices/forms/stb/

I am on 3M/bits, and I have made an appointment to have my connection updated by 16th Dec. I had Pace box updated to Samsung qyite some time ago. I am lead to believe that the box is maximun 5M/bits, however on close inspection, the main feed to it has an "Attenuator" in the main lead to the box. I suspect that this if removed will make the Samsung box capable of higher speed than 5M/bits...I wonder if NTL techs are aware of this.

Here is a Strange concept - If you currently have a router and it will not give you the full 10mbit speeds dues to only having a 10mbit port, most are quite happy to go to the shops and pay for a new router - mostly coming in at about £50 lets say. When NTL Charge people to go from STB to SACM to get the full speed, again costing £50 there is a Uproar???

Because a router is not part of the NTL delivery system.

If your SACM supplied by NTL feeding 1 PC was the bottleneck and couldn't acheive the 10Mbps NTL were offering, yet your neighbour got 10Mbps on his SACM again supplied by NTL, wouldn't you be part of the uproarious crowd? Damn right you would.

that's because NTL are contacted to supply the equipment including modem and it's their duty to sort it out if it isn't capable of delivering the service.

Correct. We are buying a service from NTL, and it is up to them to supply the equipment to deliver that service. This is the business model NTL have chosen, not us. If I had paid for my modem or STB, and it needed upgrading for the new service, I would not have a problem, in the same way that I was planning to replace MY router.

Agree 100%. I have no intention of paying £50, but I fail to see why I should have to go through retentions to avoid it. The sooner NTL scrap the charge, the better.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

The way NTL are handling this and the support I received when enquiring about this is a joke.

Last monday I contacted CS to ask when my area would be receiving the 10mb service, the CS said he could upgrade me right now, but because I have a STB I would be limited to around 5mb, if I wanted the full 10 I would have to purchase a Cable modem at a cost of £50 from them. This annoyed me a litle as I know all new customers in my area have been issued with a Samsung STB and Cable Modem instead of running it through the STBs modem, where as I having been a broadband customer since launch with them, am being forced to pay more money to get what everyone else gets for free. Also #I only had the samgsung STB for a year now, so I wonder why they diddn't give me a modem to futureproof my equipment instead of requireing new equipment each time they up the speeds.

However, moving on, 3 hours later my speeds were still identical. 2 days later I call back and speak to the indian call centre of doom and get transfered back to accounts since he tells me I'm still on the 3mb service. The new CS I spoke too said he would activate the 10mb service for me, he also said when I mentioned about the 5mb limit on the STB that it wa total rubbish and the person I spoke to on monday diddn't have a clue and was telling me crap. so half an hour later, I reboot the STB and have to enter my PID and password for the provisioning again (odd). I'm still on 3mb speeds and now feeling very ****ed off. I waited for the enxt day to talk to someone again as it was now after 10pm.

Third try, this time I spoke to a much more helpfull CS who had bothered to read the memos about the 10mb upgrade. She told me apparently the CD I spoke to yesterday had cancled and readded the 3mb service to my account as he thought that would enable the 10mb service. She also told me that the STBs were indeed limited to about 5mb and that I would need a cable modem to take the full speed. She then pointed me to www.ntlworld.com/stb where I was able to fill out a request for an engineer to contact me about having a cable internet line added so I could connect a modem. However, my last question she answered is either wrong yet again or NTL's policys have changed. I asked of I could purchase my own modem (I want a Linksys WCG200) instead of buying the one they offer as it will save me money (the WCG200 is an all in one modem/wireless router so I wouldn't have to buy the NTL Modem AND a wireless router). She said that would be fine just tell the engineer I won't require a modem.

Since then I've done a little research and discovered that you can only use the NTL approved modems on their service... I'm more than unhappy now, it's been a typical example of their staff not knowing anything about the service they offer and the underhand way they treat exiting customers. If I don't have a free modem and 10mb speeds by the end of the week I will be switching to a 8mb ADSL service and Sky+ TV for half the price that these idiots charge for their incompatance.

NTL ask me for £50 I will say sure but I get to insert it where sun don't shine.

OK, so NTL specified a box without checking whether it allowed any room for further expansion? Now, they expect us STB owners who have this incorrectly specified box to pay installation charges to get a modem to give us equal speeds to those Modem users get for free?

I have a Terayon modem and every night I fail to reach download speeds greater than 1.5Mbps. I thought this 10Mb upgrade was supposed to provide greater speeds!

Reading the ntlworld website, it says I will have to pay £50 to upgrade to a new modem!

This is outrageous! Loyal customers have to shell out more money for a new modem whereas new customers get a shiny new one anyway. This is absolute ********.

Have to say that if there is any attempt to make me pay £50 then I will decide to go over to Sky+ for the first time and replace my broadband with one of the other providers out there - and also take the telephone line back to BT.

I am simply not willing to be treated in this way with the demand for £50 for a service they are failing to provide with their own 'provided' equipment.

Or assertiveness helps you not pay ;)

Had my SACM installed today, was on Samsung STB 3Mbps see my story on page 77 of this thread, post number 1155.

Now getting;

Tue, 13 Dec 2005 15:51:26 UTC

1st 512K took 500 ms = 1024 KB/sec, approx 8438 Kbps, 8.24 Mbps
2nd 512K took 437 ms = 1171.6 KB/sec, approx 9654 Kbps, 9.43 Mbps
3rd 512K took 438 ms = 1169 KB/sec, approx 9633 Kbps, 9.41 Mbps
4th 512K took 422 ms = 1213.3 KB/sec, approx 9998 Kbps, 9.76 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 9431 Kbps, 9.21 Mbps

The speed as per the above test has fluctuated a bit during the afternoon and may well slow down as the evening progresses, but I know I'm on 10Mbps so I'm a very happy chappy - downloading is phenominal :)

As far as I'm aware it's all free (as per what CS told me). I'll make a point of checking my next bill.

Thank you NTL, jobs a goodun
