Virgin Media has today launch Premier Sports in HD as we think when Premier Sports 2 launches soon it will launch in HD on Virgin Media UK on Channel 552.

551 works for me but only if I type in manually but not if I try and select from the guide or flick through channels.

Probably an error by Virgin but we can always hope that it's now part of Full House. I can remember a while back hearing that Premier were keen to be included as part of XL.

The broadcaster is looking to takeover an other broadcaster who own up to 8 channels.

It far too easy to know the broadcaster if we reveal the number of channels they own.

Just a heads up for those that have not seen the other thread, but Disney has won the bidding war for Fox, but the situation on who will buy Sky is still up in the air, but it looks like Comcast will get Sky.

What does this mean?

Channels like FX and National Geographic will now be owned by Disney and if Comcast buys Sky, it means all the Sky branded channels along with Challenge, SyFy, Universal, CNBC and Movies24 will all be owned by Comcast.

Also, Sky own the European paytv rights to Fox and Disney films, Disney will want these for its own streaming service, ultimately affecting the viability of Sky's film channels.

Yep, but as I said in the streaming thread the other day, I think a lot of the paytv channels will wither as the streamers gain more power. This is the beginning of that process.

There is no way that Disney will now allow its content on competitive services such as Sky, so we're into a new era of each company owning and broadcasting its own content on its own platform and apps.

Absolutely correct, Horizon. Events will conspire against the viability of conventional channels. As you say, content will be restricted, viewers will be pulled elsewhere (for a variety of reasons, including content, the convenience of on demand and advertisement fatigue), and our currently popular channels will become unviable.

It'll take a few years, but the trend will be noticeable in about half a decade. It doesn't really take much to work out.

FFS :(

UKTV (at least when I last checked five minutes ago) is still half-owned by the same person who owns VM, yet we're going to lose the channels. So much for the "love" between sister companies.

As the Broadcast article goes on to say, this is about the future possibility of a combined on demand service being offered by the BBC, ITV and CH4. They want to keep the on demand rights to themselves.

As I said earlier regarding Disney, we're into a new era. Each broadcaster wants to keep its own content for its own platform and apps.

Note: ITV and others are hoping to buy Discovery's share of UKTV. We should hear about that any day now. That maybe another reason for the reluctance to do a deal with VM

Not only that, but last year's price rise was made public on 1 August (here). I'd imagine Virgin would prefer to resolve this with UKTV fairly quickly, assuming they are about to start telling customers that their bills will be going up again.

Well, I hope Virgin keep their nerve. The existing UKTV deal is most unsatisfactory, and it's only disputes such as these that ultimately resolve them.

I feel for people who love to watch these channels, although I would point out that the majority of their material consists of repeats. Personally, I won't miss them.

Virgin have provided replacement channels which do not rely on repeated material.

People used to complain about repeats, but now they are happy to pay to see them!

How perverse!

It would be a cull of 24 channels in total taking into account +1 and HD. Surely a last minute deal will be agreed? If not it'll be the biggest amount of channels cut in one go in British broadcast history. Even more significant than the SKY basic channels leaving
11 years ago. After all the UKTV channels are the most watched outwith the classic "terrestrial channels".

My parents will be livid. Pretty sure they'll be on the phone to Virgin demanding a discount on Monday. I'm sure they won't be the only ones.

Yes, that is the dilemma. Surely, though, we shouldn't have to pay to watch all this repeated material. It is a disgrace, really.

UKTV channels should be consigned to Freeview. No wonder people are turning to Netflix and Amazon for their TV fix. At least they provide good value for money. They are churning out more original dramas than all the terrestrial and pay tv channels put together!

Pay tv channels will surely be doomed sooner rather than later if they cannot do better than this. And sadly, I concluded a while ago that they cannot.

Gold HD really old shows in some sort of letterbox format. Well the thing is i see it from both sides but losing all these channels in one go is massive

I shall be livid also if they loose UKTV. I am going to have to consider leaving Virgin for TV. Hopefully a last minute deal can be done. Not holding my breath though.

It looks as though UKTV's channel numbers are being allocated to the new/other channels:

Those channel numbers look unlikely.
More4 moving to 281?
3 sports channels in the 100 series of channels?
Also conflicts with other announcements.

Where will Virgin Media UK put True Entertainment +1, Vice, C&I HD, History HD, Lifetime +1, ZooMoo, Love Nature SD and Horse & Country when Virgin kiss and make up with UKTV?

See Virgin Media are saying it down to BBC Worldwide (Or whatever they call it this week) but UKTV are 50% own by Discovery.

What about them? Oh yes we forgot Virgin Media owner Liberty Global part own All3Media with Discovery.

We would love to be an fly on the wall at Liberty Global HQ or Discovery HQ when John Malone hear about this.

He will sent Virgin Media UK to bed with no tea.

Nope! I don't think thats covered. The canellation clause only applies to price rises. VM is providing alternatives so the equivalent value of the package is the same.

Edit: This has just been confirmed via VM's Community Forum.

But not the same channels. I don't personally watch much "normal" tv, but Alibi and Drama are popular in my house.

My sub will get cancelled if the UK TV channels leave.

What if Virgin and UKTV make up? Surely VM didn't think that through, or they are adamant the UKTV channels are being withdrawn.

If you read the articles that have been released the issue is over access to BBC owned material that UKTV has no control over. UKTV can't give VM access to content it does not own, so this is going nowhere fast.

Well if the BBC have struck an exclusive deal with Netflix then there's no way out.

To me this is serious i pay 90+ quid a month for access to UKTV channels. So i assume this is why we're finally getting basically free channels from freeview released ....

My mother is a pensioner and becoming more and more house bound if they withdraw UKTV i'm out of there. I should have been sooner I just don't want the hassle of losing my internet which i've used for 17 years now in a row. I find it predictably warm

No other service has "carriage issues" than the cheap, dreadful and power hungry liberty global lads

This is why the media are saying that it's unlikely that an eleventh hour deal will be made in this particular case as has been the case for other carriage disputes.

They could downgrade to the 'free' M/Player pack though. This is what I'll be doing until my contract ends if they don't compensate me for the loss of these channels.

Will this not affect Sky when there deal is up too?

Are the box sets available on Sky?

There's a good chance Sky will pay up if it's partially down to fees minus the OD offering - more power to their elbow.
