So, is this the reason why VM pulled the advert from the Home screen banner? What other way could VM take selected Premium UHD content and make available to its subscribers without breaching terms with Sky? Can the 4K signal be received by subscribers to Sky Sports HD Main Event channel to compatible 4K tv's but remains in just HD for 1080p tv's? In same way BT Ultimate UHD content is still received on non 4K tv's in just 1080 HD? So confused.

BT ultimate UHD is a different channel to BTSports so your logic doesn't apply.

I have the top package and it is included foc like the other BT Sport channels - I wouldn't know if this applies to users with lesser packages through Virgin.

Den, they've signed a deal. There's a reason why it hasn't happened yet, and as we don't know what's going on in the background, it's difficult for anyone to comment with anything factual.

It could be as simple as an agreement the deal will be implemented on 1 October. Nobody knows. It is pure speculation that the implementation date is fixed to the start of the Premiership season. I said earlier that I thought it was more likely to be geared to contractual expiry/implementation dates. This is looking increasingly likely.

Intersting to see under tv listings on my FotMob app that for the Burton v Villa match that it is being shown on Sky Ultra HD 1.

I don't recall it being called that before which sounds like more than one linear channel rather than a red button channel to me. It makes me wonder if we will eventually be getting more than one Ultra HD channel whenever it launches.

ozsat 15-09-2020 15:05

Re: UHD on Virgin Media

There are two Ultra streams on Sky - which are often called 1 and 2 but that means nothing to the user.

If you manually tune them in they appear as UHD1 and UHD2 - but not is not seen in the menus for access.

If you mean playing recordings from the V6, I'm afraid that's a known software error. Only some channels are affected, but that probably doesn't help you in this case.

Just point out that the football listings sources people are using appear to be wrong.

Sky UHD keeps cropping up when it is not scheduled. Pick was listing and was never scheduled.

I wonder where the incorrect listings are coming from.

People with VM and no access to Sky UHD - think they are missing matches they are not :)

Re: UHD on Virgin Media

I have noticed that a lot of films available on Sky Cinema now flag as UHD in search results but only show as HD on the info page for that specific film.

To my eyes, films such as Joker certainly appear to be higher resolution than the usual poor Sky Cinema quality. However, all on demand content, including SD/HD from other providers like ITV, makes my V6 send a 2160p signal to my TV so I cannot be certain that those films are indeed UHD.

A few I've noticed to be UHD: Godfather Parts 1 & 2, Blade Runner Final Cut, Godzilla King of Monsters, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Joker, Captain Phillips, Inglorious Basterds and also the Sky One shows Brassic and Avenue 5.

Hopefully someone else can verify those are UHD as I suspect.

I’ve also noticed the search results as per my post further up the thread.
Although it says HD it is far better on my 49inch LG than broadcast HD channels.

They say UHD in the search menu - but when you actually go to play them the icon has changed to HD.

I agree the sound quality seems better too - I did check within the Sonos app and that confirms the audio is still Dolby Digital 5.1 rather than the improved Dolby Digital Plus I've seen used on BT Sport Ultimate. I wonder what sound format Sky Q provides for UHD content.

I have noticed the icon changes to HD as you select the film although I then think the picture quality is higher than that of the usual HD on demand quality. This could well be a placebo effect but it seems to me like the labelling of these listings isn't quite complete but the film is UHD - perhaps pending an official announcement?

The difference in picture quality between SD and HD is obvious - at least it is to my eyes. I would hope that the picture quality between HD and UHD would be equally obvious. I can't test this out for myself but hope to when my 4K TV arrives later this week.

Re: UHD on Virgin Media

So, I'm still sceptical.
I have set my v6 to not upscale so that the TV will report the true resolution. This is working as expected on TV channels (576 on BBC1, 1080i on BBCHD, 2160 on BT Sport UHD).

When testing one of the films listed as UHD is does output at 2160
however, when testing any of the normal HD listed films (like Godzilla - 2014), that also outputs at 2160.

Also, no matter what film, the audio stays as standard DD.

Hopefully it is a sign of things coming along though.

ozsat 22-09-2020 16:05

Re: UHD on Virgin Media

I trhink you'll find if you pick any SD material from Catch-Up or OnDemand - the V6 still outputs it at 2160.

Try a Dad's Army episode from Series 4 onwards.

You may need to adjust the settings for HLG - but this should not globally change for non-HLF pictures.

Many viewers have commented that the HDR pictures seen on their TV at home are dimmer than the equivalent SDR pictures. There is a good reason for that which I will discuss below, but thanks to the ability of the eye to adapt, it does not necessarily mean that those dimmer HDR pictures will lead to a poor experience

Just looking for some advice. When I run 4K UHD HDR content on my Samsung TV from my PS4 if I press the "Info" button on my Samsung remote it says at the top the resolution along with 2 boxes, 1 saying UHD and the other HDR.

However, when watching HDR content on the V6 like the current French Open, and Netflix HDR content etc this does not appear on my TV, so is it really HDR? I've got the relevant options selected lile 2160p and 2160p pass through.

Are you sure the V6 is in a HDR enabled HDMI socket? May be worth swapping it with the PS4 to check.

On my Samsung (HDR) when I access 4K on Eurosport the clay is bright orange instead of red on HD. On an otherwise perfect TV I don't want to mess with the settings on this UHD channel as I think it will cock up all the settings on HMDI1 Virgin input. However as I find the UHD commentary awful I think I'll stick to HD anyway! (PS: Note to all Eurosport commentators - it is not tennis etiquette to talk whilst the rally is in play. Take some lessons from Frew McMillan!)

I think the 4K Eurosport channel is Europe-wide hence the non-local commentary and difference to their HD channels. And I agree, he's awful, and not just because he talks during play.

I'm sure its on its way very soon. The total services thing in the diagnostics menu has gone up 1 to 497. If that means anything. I can't see any extra channels right now.

No but Sky Q is now capable of HLG so surely its possible to display live content in HDR.

When Sky first announced the availability of HDR on their platform, they said that the first live sport using it was likely to be the Tokyo Olympics next summer.

Sadly still waiting for uhd from Sky come on Virgin Media put us out our misery

I see for example, Cobra is showing twice when searched, one is UHD.

Re: UHD on Virgin Media

So no Christmas morning surprise occurred today then. lol

Surely it must be very soon. Loads of dramas and some movies are showing as UHD in the search areas. Lots of well-known SKY ONE dramas for starters.

VM are the biggest teasers around. The Company is definitely of the female persuasion. Lol

Re: UHD on Virgin Media

We should all call up saying "it says UHD bit isn't"

ozsat 02-10-2020 03:57

Re: UHD on Virgin Media

Something similar occurs on SkyQ boxes. You get a show promoted with a "even better in Ultra HD" banner splashed on it - only to find that the programme is not available in UHD.

I expect they will blame the delay on the pandemic. Seems to be a good excuse for everything at the moment. I thought they were working from home!

Very disappointed this has not launched yet.

Hoping it does too sooner than later, if they had delays due to Covid19 you thought they issue a statement about the delay

I think, if you stand back from all this, it is clear that Sky UHD is coming. Frustrating as it is, we will just have to be patient!

So is the end of linear television but it’s hard to not be frustrated at the perpetual delay. :D

There is no delay to the end of linear TV. That future is yet to arrive.

I thought it was finally happening just after midnight

I did a search for a few Sky Cinema & Sky One titles that come up as UHD on the search and when clicking them it went blank.

Surely it due soon.

Yes, you can see the wheels are in motion, but it is certainly taking a while to introduce this. Maybe it’s being planned as a Christmas present!

And while Virgin customers wait for 4K, Sky are already working on 8K!

That's the point - the shows are described as UHD but they are currently presented in HD.

All part of the setting-up process.

Well now that it's November, they are cutting it fine to launch Sky UHD with the end of the year getting closer. It makes me wonder if the new lockdown will delay it even longer.

Well guys, been nice chatting on here again, but I'm moving back to Sky, I'll be losing BT Sport's but me and my wife feel the V6 box is so clunky to use, I said to the guy that when the new Horizon box is up and running, we nutty be back.

Enjoy Sky UHD Mark. It might have launched on Virgin if you are back in 5 years time?

Re: UHD on Virgin Media

The current V6 software is way better than SkyQ - recording system is a long way behind.

SkyQ looks good but does little.
