Presumably some Netflix content will be in 4k.
Are EuroSport/BBC showing any Olympic events in 4K? If so, it would make sense for the box to be launched well before the Olympics start.

Well Netflix does offer content in 4K but sadly that will cost £8.99 per month. With TiVo launching before the olympics I can't see any reason to not show it in 4k

No 4K from the Olympics.

Nobody knows when the box is arriving, so the question "why is virgin waiting till before the Rio Olympics" isn't really answerable, as no one has (except some rumours) stated VM are waiting till before the Rio Olympics...

Products get launched when they are ready; not to some date outside VM's control.

To set a fixed date would probably mean either launching it before it is ready, or sitting on a complete product instead of earning money from it. Either would be bad business.

What i want to see on the new virgin media tivo box is more recording space like 150% or 200% and more tv channels and apps aswell.

I think bigger storage is needed, apps that loads of seperate memory, more tuners, wifi in the box to get rid of power like adapters, access recorded content on the move via 4g wifi and downloads

I'm one of those, denphone! More channels, more Catch Up TV and Box Sets, extra sports content. That's just the start.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016)

As a former Virgin customer, now with SKY, there's a few things that would tempt me back... and they are pretty basic. A fast running PVR, Amazon Instant Video plus some of the missing channels. As a boxing fan Virgin Media just isn't an option. I can't get Boxnation in HD, the PPV boxing on SKY Box Office is not in HD, can't get Spike TV which shows boxing plus I don't think Virgin have FOTV which shows 2 Golden Boy promotion events live each month for free. I'm not going to waste my breath mentioning the other SKY basic channel...

Dynamic EPG so when there are last minute changes to programme times they still record correctly

So far

Well I think a dynamic EPG is not much to ask for.

If virgin customers are paying same or more for box office events and box action they deserve HD.

I think spike is on freeview but not on virgin that is shocking.

Sky Atlantic I hear was very overpriced, virgin said the channel was valued lower than the price and sky knew that.

I think bigger storage is needed,

Apps that loads of seperate memory,

More tuners,

Wifi in the box to get rid of power line adapters, Access recorded content on the move via 4g not just wifi for streaming and downloads.

Interesting

The main problem with that is if there are programmes set on all tuners on different channels that are due to start at the scheduled end time of the event that is running late. If that happens, one of your recordings will fail to record (or commence recording after the start, if this is how the box is configured).

andrewstevenson 17-04-2016 11:31

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016)

But if You use the series link priority system correctly for the shows that are most important it's a part way to combat it, and it will record next airing

Except that if the deleted recording is the last or only showing, you're stuffed.

Priority settings are a useful device, but sometimes all the programmes (particularly on certain evenings at 9 pm) are priorities.

Additionally, you must remember that it is not always foreseeable as to which programmes will overrun, causing a conflict that is not anticipated.

denphone 17-04-2016 12:12

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016)

Indeed OB as sometimes there are 5 good programmes at 9 pm and sometimes there is no way out of it and that's why 5 or 6 tuners would sort out the problems full stop.

Yeah I think the new TiVo with additional tuners would sort the dynamic EPG issue

I only had two tuners and always got around clashes , I now have four and the ability to watch a fifth however shows on the pay channels repeat that often you can always avoid clashes.

Well this morning l had 5 recordings set for 10 pm tonight but sadly for two of them l cannot find another allocated time slot for the programmes as its the last time they being shown sadly MM so in my humble view extra tuners are definitely needed.

I can't see it costing much to stream these channels from the internet. I wonder if VM have to pay carriage costs??

Yep. I thought that the TiVo had one extra tuner than the V+, but it hasn't. It just allows you to use the third for permanent recording.

Unfortunately, new Ofcom rules may make matters worse with regards to clashes The TiVo, from what I can gather, won't allow people to use 'negative padding' to end a programme before the end. Understandably because, in normal circumstances, this wouldn't make any sense!

I could give you the app load up times from my Sky box but it would probably be as irrelevant as your comparison to your smart TV considering both have hardware far newer than the current VM TiVo box.

If you are interested though both Vevo and Youtube load to the initial screen in around 5-6 seconds.

You have to factor in the replacement cycle of devices. PVR's have a replacement cycle of at least five years. Apps will work perfectly fine at the beginning of those five years, but as apps develop in complexity over those five years, the processing power of that five year old PVR will struggle with the demands of the updated apps.

Streaming devices are updated far more frequently, each time getting more processing power to deal with the updated apps.

Coming soon - a price hike for some.

Sky has increased the cost for Sky Movies and Sky Sports to their customers including us, and unfortunately this means we’re having to pass on the increase to our customers too, from June 1st 2016.

CNN HD is now testing on satellite in preparation for a full launch on the EPG.

The picture quality is said to be one of the best with regards to the HD channels.

CNN SD is FTA, I don't know if the HD variant will be pay or not, but I doubt it (the tests are certainly FTA).

Does anyone know if this new channel is coming to VM?

Edit: Just found out that ITVBe HD and CITV HD are testing on satellite too.

If you are interested though both Vevo and Youtube load to the initial screen in around 5-6 seconds.

I am aware they are newer but I was only trying to point out the different due to the age of TiVo and how new hardware is so important

CNN SD is FTA, I don't know if the HD variant will be pay or not, but I doubt it (the tests are certainly FTA).

Does anyone know if this new channel is coming to VM?

Edit: Just found out that ITVBe HD and CITV HD are testing on satellite too.

We already have ITVBe HD anyway don't we, so I wonder if we will get CITV HD too?

With virgin media we never know. Channels can launch at start or with exclusive deals can take 3 years. It also comes down to new carriage deals and when they are due.

Coming soon - a price hike for some.

Sky has increased the cost for Sky Movies and Sky Sports to their customers including us, and unfortunately this means we’re having to pass on the increase to our customers too, from June 1st 2016.

http://community.virginmedia.com/t5/...s/td-p/3093739

Sadly this is what happens and it affect sky customers as well, I think on sky it's a £3.50 increase but i could be wrong on this

Anymore info on the software update

I expect CNN is not part of a deal but has just paid market rates for the EPG slots and satellite capacity.

The Sky price increases are detailed in a table at the end of this article:

Imo with bt now offering 55mbs on their infinity1 as a entry point vm need to start rethinking their prices, although vm is still cheaper than BT BT do provide much faster upload speeds on their entry fibre product and now faster download too.
BT upgraded my speeds today although i had to recontract but i kept the discount.

I'm the same regarding vm i was going to resign up to vm but remembered way i was treated by them so decided not too.
So far not had any probs with BT.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016)

Same here with Sky; I would genuinely do without pay television if they were the only provider and have used various methods to stop others from signing up too. They thought they were being clever; but it's cost them much, much more in the long run over the past 15 years.

I suppose it just shows that it depends which member of staff you get as to how it's dealt with.

I will never let Sky make a profit out of me again after the way I was treated following a bereavement, i've never had a problem with BT and have had some problems with VM which were quickly resolved by senior management.

To weed out the bad staff, perhaps companies should monitor who dealt with the customer (and how it was dealt with) in the period leading up to any cancellation??

In some cases what is testing or starting on satellite can be indicative of what may be coming to VM.

As of late, however, it's been more a case of what we are missing :D

I have had to buy a Freesat box to view FTA channels that aren't on the TiVo that I pay a subscription for- totally ridiculous.

I think Amazon have first run rights in UK, history have 2nd run so vm are most likely going for leftover run rights.
I watch it on starz it is a superb show i hope my source is correct as will be a nice treat for vm customers.

Here some Virgin Media Ireland news:

TheJournal.ie: Around 10,000 Irish homes had their TV connection shut off today (Tuesday).

Close to 10,000 households in Ireland will have lost their television signal today, after a transmission network was switched off last night.

The MMDS (Multichannel Multipoint Distribution System) broadcast transmission network provided a television service for households that weren’t connected by cable.
