Because 'local data centres' tend to be located on business parks and the like, and lack the dishes and other paraphernalia to pick up signal directly from satellite?

Vice plans to launch 12 TV channels across Europe

Quote:

Vice chief Shane Smith has said he plans to launch a dozen TV channels across Europe, and has rebuffed offers from media companies seeking to take a stake in his European operation.

Smith, the founder of the media company, said the company is in “fast and furious” talks with everyone from*Netflix*to ITV, Sky and Discovery about launching TV channels across the UK and Europe in the next 12 to 18 months.

Not surprised MB. VM have given up on their tv packages. Whilst im grateful for BT sport europe (Hugely in fact) VM seem to only be bothered about broadband speeds so obviously some twenty something hipster is in charge of VM.

"boys we dont need tv packages updated. we can ignore even the basic freeview channels....its all about da streaming ladz! We give them fast broadband and double their speeds itll keep them hooked up! theyll love the netflix and amazons! This is how we succeed!"

Rather than more and more angry customers hating how theyre paying for a tv package without even a full freeview package...

Anyone who is genuinely angry at their VM tv package missing a few Freeview channels needs to take a long hard look at themselves.

Totally agree with you, Vince.

There are many, many reasons why some people need to rely on a STB, some of those are:

##Not being able to install an antenna where they live, not their property, poor access etc - but they already have Sky, VM etc installed.
##Technological illiteracy (usually due to age) - there are a number of people living nearby in this category. I quite often get asked to solve problems where an elderly person has accidentally pressed a button on their remote (usually the AV button) and are unable to find their way back.
##Sometimes the old folk just get the remotes mixed up and can't understand why nothing happens.
##Some were unable to justify the cost of a new antenna a few years back.

The best solution in the majority of these cases is to have the TV start from an HDMI source with an associated STB and leave the TV tuner out altogether, the STB box can usually operate the TV so the remote problem is solved.

Sky boxes are no problem because they carry all the channels, Youview boxes from BT carry the HD variants over IPTV so they're not too bad either. Which leaves us with VM and the despicable situation with (the lack of many) Freeview channels.

I'm no longer with VM because I got fed up fighting the Tivo - I don't have that many years left!

Not all of us have the wealth, mental health or the support to resolve problems which occur - to suggest someone needs to 'look at themselves' because VM are missing numerous Freeview channels shows a distinct lack of understanding of the problems some people face.

I'm interested in what VM/Liberty do in regards to stbs. Do they go the Irish route and perhaps do a trial of Horizon in the UK, or do they go the UK route and try out TIVO in Ireland.

To all intents and purposes, VM UK and VM Ireland are one company now, but with different hardware. Lets see how that works out...

I've wondered this too. Some say that Horizon is a better box than TiVo, but I don't know the differences to comment.

As said before, 4sevenHD & ch4+1HD were launched in colaboration with Freeview with the sole purpose of pushing Freeview HD sales, with DVB-T2 becoming the sole Freeview transmission standard from 2018. There were rumours at the time they launched that the channels could dissapear again at that time, when the next block of Freeview spectrum is earmarked for selling off to launch 5G services.

Firstly IT IS ONLY TV, it's not that important.

Secondly, as you have highlighted, there are other options. Very few are forced into a VM contract. To be angry when there are other options (and to be honest even if there aren't) makes no sense....and it's only tv

So yes I genuinely don't understand the problem as people have choice and I'd give the older generation in particular a little more credit to be able to sort their lives out themselves instead of painting some as hapless individuals.

Yup, I was told by a contact who works for Channel 4 that these channels were to use up capacity that would otherwise be wasted and for the reasons that you gave too.

As well as trying to promote Freeview, they also want to drive up sales of Freeview HD boxes. This is because they intend to close the SD PSB channels on Freeview in 2018. Some of the commercial channels are likely to follow suit.

It is likely that the C4 HD channels will remain (even after the reallocation of some of the TV spectrum to the mobile phone companies) as the way that the HD channels are broadcast is much more efficient.

Just over a year ago, I was told that these channels will probably be extended to other platforms in "the medium term".

In essence, it's Digital Switchover 2 as people with SD only boxes will gradually start to lose channels.

In the grand scheme of things, of course, that is absolutely correct.

But this forum isn't about 'the grand scheme of things' it is specifically about TV, and more specifically about Virgin TV. Therefore, in that context, it could be considered important.

I don't think that for someone who is paying a TV provider, it is unreasonable to expect all the Freeview channels to be included. Otherwise they would also need to buy a Freeview PVR.

For someone like myself, who uses Virgin for phone and Broadband, and get M TV as a free add-on, then it's not unreasonable that some Freeview channels are missing.

TV M was originally brought in to temp viewers away from Freeview, I wonder if they've abandoned this idea? If I get a TiVo, I'll drop down to M.

The last deal with Virgin Media was signed in late 2012 when More4 +1 was launch on January 2013.

Satanta Sports 1 has the same lineup as Premier Sports bar one (The EPL Saturday game at 3pm).

We have seen no plans on Virgin Media UK being set to launch all the True Channels. But we feel they may launch when Sony Pictures Television (Who now own them) deal is up with Virgin Media UK.

Last Sony Pictures Television deal was done in December 2011.

TV M was offered as part of DSO. As long as you took a phone line, there were no additional costs. I think you will find having a TiVO on M incurs a TiVO charge of £5 a month (just as there is still a £5 charge for V+ boxes not used on XL).

Bit of a daft comment. Youre basing what you like or dont like and thinking everyone is the same and then generally being rude about it. No need for that. Personally I think if im paying for tv i should get everything out of principle. Plus spike and trutv have shown some good programmes (in my opinion)

I think you've missed my point completely. Put simply if you are paying for a service that is being delivered as advertised and are still angry pay someone else to give your money to. Making the explicit choice to stay angry makes no sense.

I'd be grateful for any new channels sooner rather than later. For me, the SPT channels would be a welcome addition to VM; a decent portfolio of channels in my opinion. I would watch Sony Movies, Scuzz and movies4men from the off.

Thanks, I won't mind paying the £5 per month as i'm thinking of scrapping my TV licence and this will more than pay for it. Of course, I won't be using any of the TiVo facilities that require a licence ;-)

Absolutely, if you're not bothered about sport and the latest movies, as I aren't, a combination of Freeview and Freesat is the best way to go. Most new TV's have Freeview built in and Freesat boxes are now going for as little as £44.

I hate Sky and always like to support the underdog, but VM have now had long enough to get their act together IMO.

New channel to launch within 18 months. Apparently, they are in negotiations to partner up with Sky, Netflix, ITV and Channel 4. Spot the missing company...

...A contact tells me that (up to press) they are not in any negotiations with VM.

Lol, I meant in comparison to Sky in the UK :D

I guess that LG is worth more than the owners of Sky, so I don't suppose I can use that as an excuse for supporting VM any more.

There's a ***possibility*** that Box Nation HD may be coming to VM around 23/11/15.

It is supposed to be arriving on vm next month at some point.

So you would be happy for Virgin to acquire Atlantic and other channels then turn around a month later and say because we got these channels we are putting prices up by £x a month? I don't think many people would be happy with that scenario.

To be fair it would be a good start to have Channel 4 & ITV Catchup available in HD, something currently lacking.

I get the feeling Channel 4 CatchUp is also a very basic service on VM compared with the online offering.

How long have the current on-demand servers been commissioned? Eight years? It probably isn't justified to add more storage to them now hence the decision to favour a wider range of SD content over HD. I would assume there are plans to replace the current infrastructure with something more modern - maybe this is what has been hinted at for next Spring?

I also note there's been rather a lack of Virgin Media ads of late, which perhaps indicates a change to the offering, though it could just be they're in media I don't regularly consume.

It wouldn't be acceptable but isn't that exactly what they did with BT Sport Europe? At least with the likes of Sky Atlantic / ITV Encore, it would be adding entertainment channels to entertainment packages. Slightly more acceptable than cross-subsidising premium sports content from an entertainment package.

I'm pretty sure that Arthur would complain about any price increase however, going by his track record. :)

If they gave us the Now TV app the problem of cost wouldn't arise for those who didn't want to pay.

I have some sympathy with Arthur and I think perhaps VM could put together an additional package of miscellaneous smaller channels that people could choose to subscribe to if they wanted more choice. However, I don't think we are really missing much, apart from SA.

I think/hope this will be the future. The tivo will/should have apps for prime content like sky atlantic, amc, netfix, amazon prime,bt sport etc. That way the people that want those channels subscribe and the ones who are happy with a more basic channel selection can have smaller bills. As i have mentioned before we should be able to streamline the channels we want to watch and not have a lot of dross impinged on us by the "bundles".

Media Boy Here is a very good question for you. Do you remember a channel that has just music attached to 'films' l forget what the channel was called.

But it was like watching a stream or the sea etc and it had music attached to it, and it was so soothing.

Any chance you have heard of the channel - it was on Sky, wondering if it ever come to VM

anything could happen in 25 months.

I only posted 25 months as I think the Virgin Media Ireland channels I listed will be with us in the UK by 2018.

I have only seen info on H2 HD being set to launch next month.

Maybe Fox Wildlife will happen when Fox own 100% of National Geographic.

From that 1st link you posted the new company will be called National Geographic Partners:

Quote:

National Geographic Partners will be owned 73% by 21st Century Fox and 27% by the National Geographic Society. Both organizations will split operations equally, with a shared governance structure and equal representation on the board of directors. The National Geographic Society president and CEO, Gary Knell, will serve as the board’s first chairman.

Expect to see the TV channel get dumbed down.
