It turns out that the processor, although it is powerful enough, doesn't support NX! Windows 8 and 10 require this. (Intel Pentium 4 540) I have found a single core processor that will fit my board and has NX support. (Intel Pentium 4 524) £6.80 eBay. I'll give this a try when it arrives. |

My old 915 chipset board was P4 only - No dual cores, not even the Pentium D ... The 540 and similar may logically appear as if dual, but it's a single core with hyperthreading. With a 945 chipset, you're generally up to Pentium D dual core - and with an updated VRM, Core 2 Duo but not the higher FSB ones. PS. Wow the Pentium D seems to come up cheaper than the P4 - probably because of the small window when boards could take a Pentium D Dual but not the vastly superior Core 2 Duo |

Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion
Yesterday I had success in converting an old dual core Windows 7 PC to W10. To do this I did all the usual things, removing unnecessary drives, cards and drivers, but I also had to replace the processor with one that had NX support. This went smoothly apart from a whole hour trying to lock down the fan on top of the processor. INTEL motherboards are an absolute pig in that respect.
W10 runs quite well on a low spec machine, better than Windows 7, but I just have to be careful not to give it too much to do. Incidentally, Nvidia have now brought out Windows 10 drivers. Installing those after my main conversion task made a real difference to the crispness of the system. |
Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion
I am actually pretty surprised how easy MS have made it for people to upgrade to Windows 10 even if they're not running a legal copy of Windows 7 or 8 and for that machine to be classed as then running a legit copy of Windows 10.
Checked my laptop HDD out using speedfan and it is basically telling me it is knackered and needs replacing so i will through a 240GB SSD in there to breath new life into the laptop! ---------- Post added at 10:05 ---------- Previous post was at 10:04 ---------- Quote:

Settings/System/Default Apps/choose default apps by file type, scroll down the very long list to jpg, click on Photos then select Irfanview, you may want to do it for jpg and jpeg files.

The clean upgrade is anything but. It is a messy process with lots of remnants of apps it was supposed to have deleted. It only seems to delete apps in Program Files and Program files(86) and without systematically deleting registry entries. For instance, I found registry entries for Disk Keeper, (Condusiv Technologies), in the registry when it had been removed at upgrade. Also my copy of Python, installed in the root drive, was left untouched! Having done a clean install, wiping out all my old apps, I was reluctant, initially, to run any more start up applications for fear of reducing speed. However Tune Up has sorted out numerous issues such as clutter, irrelevant registry entries, orphaned links etc. This has transformed my system. Everything runs faster, it can multitask reliably and shutdown and start up are significantly quicker. Whereas the processor idled at around 15% it now idles at 2%. I plan to use this PC as a media server, running Plex, (Not the crappy Windows 10 app, but the proper Plex server) , but it failed to stream smoothly if at all. Now it dishes out every film without any issues. |

I use Firefox 40.0.3 too. I had the same difficulty as you at first. Even though I changed the default away from Edge, when asked, I continued to be asked every time I started Firefox up. To permanently change default settings for all kinds of apps go to SETTINGS. Start > Settings > System > Default Apps I now have Irfan View as my default for photos, WinAmp for music and CDs, VLC for Video and DVD. I am trying the Windows 10 default for Mail and Calendar. The calendar integrates nicely with our Google-based family calendar on this PC, but won't detect it on my son's laptop. Mail works a bit like an Outlook Lite. I will probably go back to Outlook. |

Was it an upgrade to windows 10 you did? If so was it activated correctly? You shouldn't need to do anything if this was the case.

Like millions of other I took the bait for Windows 10. All was well at first, sorted one or two problems myself (just interested/not a techie)
Just this week I noticed on powering up, entering my Microsoft 4 digit pin I arrive at my desktop with a : Critical Error Message stating / Start Menu and Cortana not working, We will try to fix this the next time you log in. Also try turning off Fast Boot in the power settings. http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/19...n-page-92.html |
Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion
Thanks Snoopz for your pointers, must admit it, to me its always a bit daunting to meddle with the settings. Yet its thanks to you guys it encourages me to overcome those reservations.
This afternoon as I booted up to look into this issue, greeted with the usual message. So shut down again. Booted again and as expected no message. Notifications in the task bar flashed updates waiting to be installed. Chose to clear them first, this required restart which I did logged in MS account and through to desktop to find nothing. Booted up several times and all the way to my desktop and the gremlin of a Critical Error Message has gone. amazing??? |
Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion
Anyone has any idea, where I can ask questions about networking problems with windows 10?
-WOL does not work. (I have tried the workarounds:disable fast startup, use old nic drivers, this worked for 3 out of 8 pcs) -non-passworded local networking (I disabled it in network sharing but it still wants a password! 4 out of 8 pcs have this problem) -what are those mystery phones that appear in the network? bluetooth? wifi? passers by with a phone? See http://www.tenforums.com/network-sha...g-network.html |

All are clean installs with different NICs. My problems are technical and they do no usually apply to the average home user. With Linux one controls things, with Windows, it's voodoo stuff. But the people at my home are Windows users.... There are 20 pages in the MS community forum with WoL problems, passworded networking and I gave a link about the mystery phones. No real solution anywhere... I worry, when a PC with no bluetooth/wifi, has an unknown phone in the network with no ip but with a MAC address that is not the MAC of anyone's phone in the family.... |
Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion
I have now upgraded all four of our laptops and PCs
Generally, I am very pleased with the speed and function of W10. Even our old dual core PC runs better than it did on Windows 7. There are a few niggles. The email app isn't a patch on Outlook or Outlook Express. The calendar has imported our family calendar from Gmail on some machines, but not others. Irritating! I have also noticed, when using AVG tune Up, that W10 generates a lot of apparent errors and junk to clean up; this more so where I kept Windows 7 apps etc. Running Tune Up for the first time transformed the speed of apps, start up and shutdown. |

Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion
I switched on the old Dell D610 laptop to bring it up to date, when I tried to log in after it rebooted, it did the modern BSOD equivalent, and rebooted, kept doing this :(
so googled the error driver_irql_not_less_or_equal i8042hdr.sys http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/i...e-720b9b6ba5ae seems a lot of people have had this, seems the lenovo touchpad driver gets installed! as in the link above, plugged in a usb keyboard and mouse, deleted the lenovo entry in device manager, rebooted, and all ok now! Meanwhile on my desktop using win10, dessite Oracle saying virtualbox now works in win 10, my existing VMs and new ones, won't start :( VMware works, but is annoying, after every big Win10 update, I have to uninstall vmware, and install it again, as the updates kill the bridged network adapter! |

Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion
<<long screed alert>>
I was one of the many frustrated MS window users who were stuck with the 80040020 error message appearing every day. Took me ages to find out that the message didn't necessarily mean that I actually had an error but that Microsoft had decided to protect their servers from being overwhelmed. I was a tad peeved that, having reserved my upgrade to W10 very early on, Microsoft had left me and a lot of others in limbo trying to figure out what was wrong. There were solutions out there but as they involved wiping folders and entering code in that scary black box, some fellow members will know that this timorous beastie does not cope well with instructions about typing anything in that thing :) , so I decided to wait until MS thought I was worthy enough to be upgraded. This weekend, being stuck with bed rest for the third week running meant I was very very BORED so I had a play around and wondered just how much damage I could wreck using the MS media creation tool and, much to my delight, after a couple of hours of peeping at the screen over the top of my hand I finally have Windows 10!!!!!!! so there are now 10,000,001 users. :) Initial thoughts are that I don't like the new start screen despite getting rid of most of the tiles, so have gone back to using StartisBack. I talk to enough inanimate objects in my life and the idea of one of them answering me back freaks me out so no thanks Cortana. Not overly impressed with Edge, will keep an eye on how it develops but in the mean time will continue to use Firefox. Switch on to actually browsing seems a lot faster but that could be down to being bored enough to spend time clearing away the rubbish that I seemed to have lying around on my HD. My Panda Free 2016 anti virus seems to be working well as is my Malwarebytes anti-exploit. ... and the best news is that I am off bad rest so my laptop can breath easier as I won't keep fiddling with it's settings. :D |
