But can we rule out Sky Sports 5 being a rebranding of the red button service/Sky Sports Xtra service? It's a possibility, surely?

The way that it currently loops through on the test/glitch to the info about the channel makes me think that the EPG could stay the same with SS5 being an "interactive" service activated via the red button is possible. Potentially you would just "activate" Sky Sports 5 by pressing the red button and it wouldn't appear on the EPG as a channel (as with their red button content currently).

Seems plausible. Just not sure why I'd have to activate it.

Yes, perhaps the reason for the delay of SS3&4 HD is because they want to launch them all altogether. As Sky Sports 5 hasn't been officially announced yet, I also wonder if this is the reason for the secrecy surrounding the launch of the missing Sky Sports missing HD channels.

As for Virgin getting the channel, surely it's a must. Just not sure about HD version of the channel I'm afraid.

It's crossed my mind that Sky have done another Sky Atlantic on VM and let them have the full stable of channels, only to launch a new channel afterwards.

There has also been speculation about where Sky will get the SD slot for thix channel, but I think that Sky may launch this as an HD channel only. Perhaps they are going to employ the same strategy as they did when wanting to migrate customers from analogue to digital ie the carrot of new services at no extra cost to those on the new service, then the stick approach of slowly dropping the SD variants.

The popularity of sport, the cost of dual transmissions and the length of time that HD has been around makes me think that this is a viable strategy for Sky to adopt.

It's a possibility yes, but I think that Sky would prefer to market that they are launching a brand new channel at no extra cost.

The saving on the EPG fee that other broadcasters would make by using this method of delivery doesn't really apply to Sky owned channels, as the fee is fed straight back into the Sky machine.

Perhaps "activate" means press the button to launch, rather than 'activate' as in call Customer Services

It tries to connect but comes up with a fault after about 10 seconds. There is actually footage on the channel, it's SKY Sports 1. The shots I've posted is what happens when you push the red button so it could very well be the new "Red Button" facility behind SKY Sports.

Taking on board all the posts and suggestions, I think "SKY Sports 5" won't be on the EPG. It's red button with a new dress and make-up :D There just isn't enough European football to support a new dedicated 24/7 channel. Saying that Boxnation only shows about 7 hours of live content per week with the rest of the content being repeats so you never know.

I've not subscribed to the Sports channels since I dumped Sky In favour of VM years ago.

If Sky Sports 5 is a linear tv channel and if VM take it or at least leave space on the EPG for it, that tells us how VM will organise the numbering of the sports channels in their forthcoming rejig.

If VM don't take SS5, everything will stay the same except Eurosport and Eurosport HD will move down the EPG two places to make way for the missing Sky HD channels.

If VM do take SS5 or allow room for its addition in the future, then the Sky SD channels will be placed on 501 and the Sky HD channels will start on 511.

Place your bets!

I think you're probably right. Sky have a good track record at strong branding so they are 'upping' the red button content as another Sky Sports 'Channel'. After all isn't Sky Sports Xtra still available as the online "Sky Sports 5???" Could be just the re-branding of that but available through the dish???

Now they are sneaky of course. It could well be that they don't give VM access to it's full content, or maybe not HD content.

That said the 2 parties have made a deal which includes an App/Red button facilities for VM, so who knows?!?!?

Whether or not this particular rumour is true, I would not be at all surprised to see BT providing more content in the future, and given the problems with Sky, BT and VM may well decide to go into some sort of content partnership to give them a bargaining tool to challenge Sky's exclusive channels.

This should reassure people on here that ITV Encore's exclusivity deal with Sky for the first year will not be a 'must have' because all of the programming will be repeats. However, when the original dramas start, I would expect VM to be at the front of the queue to get this new channel.

http://advanced-television.com/2014/...aunch-content/

ITV Encore reveals launch content

ITV has confirmed that its new pay-TV drama channel Encore will launch with shows including Broadchurch, The Ice Cream Girls and Lucan.

ITV Encore, which aims to be a showcase for the “best of contemporary British ITV drama”, will launch exclusively on Sky channel 123 on June 9th.

ITV has scheduled the first series of Broadchurch to be the centrepiece of ITV Encore’s launch. It will air in double bills from Monday through Thursday, marking the first time the series has been repeated since its original transmission more than a year ago.

The broadcaster has also lined up Mrs Biggs, which tells the story of Ronnie Biggs and the Great Train Robbery from the viewpoint of his wife, and the final four stories in David Suchet’s Belgian detective Hercule Poirot.

“Drama is a genre that we know audiences love and we have worked with some fantastic talent, both on and off screen, to build a really strong stable of series and serials over the years,” said the ITV director of television, Peter Fincham. “ITV Encore will give viewers the opportunity to revisit, or indeed discover, a wealth of ITV drama from recent times.”

The schedule will also include The Ice Cream Girls, adapted from Dorothy Koomson’s novel, and biopic Lucan, starring Rory Kinnear. Whitechapel and DCI Banks will air from their first series.

Sky News are now showing an "Activate Sky Sports 5" logo in the top right hand corner. When you press red to activate it an error message occurs however.

Any one on sky seen this too, sounds like it won't be too long before sky launch what ever sky sport is.

They will always do it and VM always fall for it, if LG have renogotiated recently and havnt insisted on provision for new channels showing existing content then they deserve everyone buggering off to sky.

That's the thing about not revealing a date. Without an official date, there can't, officially, be a delay.

It all sounds vaguely similar to negotiations between the West and Russia.

Sky Sports 5 to be European football - probably to bring out clearly what live games Sky have in response to BT snapping out rights

If virgin had not said coming soon, then would not be so bad, People thought weeks but looks like months away. Two months is not a super long time, but customers are very impatient.

The World Cup -- the common man's excuse to get a new telly -- is being used by the BBC to test UHD broadcasts, with three matches set to be broadcast at 4K resolution via both digital terrestrial TV and broadband streams. Sadly it's a closed trial only for the eyes of BBC R&D and select electronics suppliers, who will use it as a base to form strategies to deliver our UHD future.

4K may take off, you never know. Will VM follow suit with new Tivo box upgrades?

Not too knowledgeable here, but would the TiVo need to be upgraded?

I definitely think so. Not just in storage space, because 4K will take up a lot of room, but also the capability of the current box.

I don't think it can output 4k, would probably need a new generation TiVo.

This might be the stage when LGI establishes a new Europe-wide cloud-based platform in place of Tivo and Horizon. Maybe the son of Tivo and Horizon: Tivozon? :)

Yes all platforms will need new hardware as I believe 4K requires a new compression format one of them being (High Efficiency Video Coding) H.265.

Probably misinformed blue mate, my guess would be that they don't know when the channels are launching.

Be worth the wait when they do finally show up be great to watch F1 in hd the sd version is very poor quality in my opinion.

I don't see how VM can 'insist'. These are Sky channels and the way things are, they can choose which channels to make available on which platforms. I am sure that VM have skilled negotiators - they need them dealing with the likes of Sky.

We can't criticize VM until we are in possession of all the facts.

Yes and no. MediaBoy had previously announced July as the launch date for the channels. The official statement did not name a month.

On a side point I changed my mind on 31st, I'm going 23rd July for placards up and then soft launch on 31st

I still think they'll avoid during major sporting events. The World Cup ends on July 13th and the Commonwealth Games commence on 23rd July finishing 3rd August. So I suspect w/c 14th July.
