I didn't doubt VM for a second. Look at all the great channels and deals they got that were announced at the last minute.

Also don't forget VM did get Setanta and ESPN included with XL. So was only natural they would try to get the same deal for BT Sport.

Not sure is good, but SOME (nowhere near all) who were so angry and convinced that VM had goofed over BT Sport were not terribly nice to those who were calmly saying let us wait and see so am gloating in a non gloaty way.... ;)

Hi following the signing of the deal for BT Sport and ESPN we're now working on getting all the channels live on TV Anywhere:

BT Sports 1 and 2 should be live on the online version of TV Anywhere now, and ESPN will be live there this afternoon.
BT Sports 1 and 2 and ESPN will be live on the iOS app either this afternoon or tomorrow morning.

Do Sky or BT have a cooling off period? I wonder how many VM customer who jumped ship will use that as an excuse to come back to VM if they do?

Catesby 15-08-2013 12:35

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 4.

I don't see why some people are surprised at it being on XL. BT would have lost out on millions without giving it to Virgin and will be getting much more money on a guaranteed 3 year contract on the XL package than they would as a stand alone subscription, as well as the extra ad revenue from the additional viewers.

All the delays were purely to get as many customers to switch to BT as possible. Praise Virgin all you want but I reckon BT had them in the palm of their hands all along and probably got exactly what they wanted.

Yeah UK Law states 28 days

Doug P 15-08-2013 12:42

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 4.

Not true BT had the upper hand. They wanted a subscription system on VM as they keep trumpeting their desire to sell their broadband. Quote from Telegraph in late July:

"On top of its historic strength in landlines, BT is investing £2.5bn to upgrade its broadband network to fibre, and has made a foray into TV, through YouView. BT Sport is designed to help attract and retain broadband customers. “Fibre is the absolute heart of our strategy,” says Petter, whose remit covers telephony, broadband and TV."

Or they didn't have VM in any palm anyway. This deal smacks of a climbdown to get more advertising money and viewers rather than the oft stated aim (which doesn't seem to be working if figures are to be believed) of using the sport to sell fibre....

Actually it's 7 working days if sold over the phone or online (technically it can be less if the services are activated before the end of that period). Anything more is down to the company you are dealing with

From what I hear not many jumped ship, the BT approach had too many potential challenges whichever route you took. Ie move to SKY and take BT broadband meant 2 bills no multi room for BT Sport, potentially poorer BB speed etc. If you went the full BT route, no additional outlet, less HD etc etc.

What they did get was 1 million sign ups to a free service, which isn't great in the scheme of things and that probably helped VM cut the deal which they did.

Catesby 15-08-2013 12:50

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 4.

Doug P,

Why would they have needed to climb down? They will have known that they needed more subs revenue and ad money right from the start. They will also have known that Virgin do not allow direct subs the way Sky do, allowing BT to take their details and try to sell them BB, so the benefit of a stand alone sub would not be there and would not gain anywhere near as much revenue for them.

They already managed to get plenty of people re-contracting or switching to BT BB so that part of the strategy worked to the extent it was ever going to. Fact remains the amount of money they paid for sports was not sustainable without wholesaling the product and they would have known this from the get go.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 4.

So glad BT Sport has finally arrived and all the doubts expressed by so many people have been put to rest. I am especially pleased to see the channels arrive in the XL pack (which I thought might happen but wasn't 100% sure) and with the HD channels as well. Good negotiating from VM there as BT would have been trying to extract a bit more for the HD channels.

As mentioned earlier, the next big thing will be Sky Atlantic. VM have been in negotiations with Sky over the extension to the Sky basics channels and Sky also want VM's agreement to take their new Sky Bravo channel. All of this, together with the recent Fibre deal done with Sky indicates that we should have a good negotiating scenario to acquire Sky Atlantic.

So it now seems to me that Sky Atlantic will appear on cable before Christmas, but to be honest it could be with us any time from now on.

For those of you who are interested in these things, the numbers for the new channels received today are:

529 ESPN
530 ESPN HD
547 BT Sport 1
548 BT Sport 2
549 BT Sport 1 HD
550 BT Sport 2 HD

Happy viewing everyone!

Super happy this has finally been sorted out. Well done VM, you played hardball and it paid off.

I have my beloved UFC back, as well as the Premiership. I had no other way of viewing UFC, at least there were many options with watching the football.

I knew those placeholders from yesterday were live tests, I knew it. You don't put that stuff up on a live site without it needing to be there.

What a week, personally! ;)

Yeah well, we might never know who got the best deal out of it.

I think we can all agree that we're glad we have it though.

I was quite pleased to negotiate a £15p/m discount last month on the back of BT & Sky's offers as well. I think that most consumers have done pretty well out of it, whichever platform they're on.

Media Guardian report shows VM pretty chipper!!

Virgin Media already offers all Sky's sport channels, so following the BT deal has positioned itself as the "only place sports fans can enjoy every goal, try, penalty and heart-stopping sporting moment".

"Virgin Media homes are kicking-off the new season with the most complete sporting lineup around in one simple subscription, from Barclays Premier League football and Aviva Premiership rugby to F1, live golf and the culmination of a great Ashes series," said the Virgin Media chief operating officer, Dana Strong.

I did doubt a part of what you said, but if you look at my posts, you will see that I've been quite positive about the BT Sport launch on Virgin. All the signs from the more credible sources have been pointing in that direction.

The main doubt for me was whether it would be on the XL pack. That was quite a coup for VM!

Thanks for the intel, anyway Bomber, you came through in the end!

Got a few messages from investment companies saying it may be worth taking a punt on LGI as their view was that VM/LGI were pushing to get BT sports into XL. Obviously they have no more insider knowledge than anyone else but they do tend to be right on many occasions.

Fail to see how this has anything to do with Bomber, he said BT & Atlantic would be here 10 days ago.

Saying BT would come wasn't exactly a out of this world prediction, it was reasonably likely.

So, could I get clarification for someone who's asking me about this.

I'm on XL, so it looks to me like the BTSports package has effectively replaced the old ESPN package at no extra charge, including HD. (Yay!)

I assume if you're on one of the other packages, you have to pay extra if you want BTSports, and extra again if you want HD. Is that correct?

Yes its £15 for anything lower than XL

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 4.

So there's no extra charge for HD at all (apart from Sky Sports)?

There's already an excellent BT Sports app on Android and iOS with live feeds. Not sure if you can access it though with a VM account though - it may be only for BT broadband customers' accounts

to me this as to be one of virgin medias greatest days, was laughing so much this morning when put tv on and saw bt sports thinking about all those poor people who went to sky or bt,well done vm a great great day

Loving the meal pic for Mr Stokes!! Ha ha! :D

For anyone on TV L who may be considering BT Sports, it's cheaper to go to XL - something like £11 per month more, rather than £15 to get just BT Sports. Another no brainer offer from VirginMedia!

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 4.

A fantastic outcome for Virgin customers with the XL package. My Dad will be chuffed to bits when I phone him later telling him he now has BT Sports in his package for free.

SKY will now come under renewed pressure from their customers to come up with something special. I however don't see SKy really doing anything in return.

Enjoy the start of the Premiership lads :)

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 4.

I left virgin for sky in the last few weeks, had a phonecall off sky end of last month saying they could offer me everything(not bt sport) for £44,phoned them back saying i just wanted the tv deal ,offered me my line rental for half price,so got everything for £34 now.

Only a 12 month contract so may go back to virgin in a year. Did ask virgin if they could reduce my sky sports package +movies and they couldn't ,and that was costing me £32 on its own with virgin.I can see now why sky weren't budging with virgin on any deals ......full stop!!!!

Not really bothered with bt at the moment, though ive still got virgin xl till August 31st,i will get it after xmas when the fa cup kicks in,plus they will get first picks on the bigger games in the new year.
