Seriosly, there is so much more functionality on Tivo, and with VM having vastly increased the number of HD channels, I don't see how many people can live with the 20 hours HD recording space that V+ limits you to.

I brought this up before ages ago but i reckon we will end up with cloud based set top boxes everything recorded on a virtual drive that way box breaks and needs to be changed nothing is lost.

Yep, the cloud is the way to go and has massive advantages for people. But guess who is slowing things down? Content providers! I know, total surprise that one

And me, but they have taken a hell of a lot of stick about the unreliable SuperHub.
Hopefully the SH2 will resolve a lot of customer issues.

They seem reliable to me.

Neil Berkett said that VM were looking at a cloud approach at a recent event he spoke at. Said gets over the issue of lost content when a box goes faulty, gets content onto multiple devices simply and brings down CPE costs big time. His view was 2015. However he may of known he was stepping down when he made that comment :-)

They could have just designed the boxes with snap out drives which would be easy to swap in those circumstances but... oh well!

Not allowed by content providers, however a cloud solution linked to your account number is.

My Viera TV lets you attach an external hard drive and then formats / encrypts the recorded footage so ONLY that set can watch it back. The Technology is there and it aint expensive.

Indeed, but it doesn't help. If your TV failed, you'd lose your content. If your hard drive failed, you'd lose your content.

A few years ago Scientific-Atlanta offered a PVR with a built-in DVD writer that would write encrypted DVDs only it could play back. AFAIK they didn't sell any.

The new upcoming channels are welcome additions but the ones I really want to see are Sky Atlantic and the missing ITV HD channels. Sports fans would probably add Sky F1 HD, Sky Sports 3 and 4 HD and Eurosport 2 HD to that list. I wonder if any - or all - of these might be coming our way once the Liberty Global dust has settled?

Liberty Global (can I call them LG?) have no intention of changing VM's current relationship with Sky, who I'm sure would want to keep the HD versions of SS3, SS4 and SSF1 as unique selling points to potential Sky customers.

What might change is LG's ability to bid for content on a European basis - even then, the existing contracts for that content would have to expire, and I imagine that most of the 'good' ones are currently held by Sky.

Cloud PVRs are the future. One would hope that any long-term content deals that VM are considering/signing would take that into account. We don't want another MRS-style scenario where only a handful of channels can be recorded into the cloud.

Looking at cable offerings on the content I'm beginning to think that it's Liberty Global's other operations which stand to benefit from the additional bargaining power of Virgin's 5 million subscribers, rather than the other way around.

Their German operation carries Sky channels. In fact if you look at their website the Sky brand is plastered all over it. The Irish Upc website actually shows which Sky channels they carry in a separate category. I think it's fair to say they recognise the value of Sky channels.

I was with Sky at the time, paying full whack to watch Lost, whilst my friend complained to Virgin (or whatever they were called then), and got Sky Sports for free as compensation - a discount he still enjoys! If you know how to negotiate you shouldn't fear losing the Sky channels - it's an opportunity!

No he doesn't, that's just media hype - I'm sure I've read somewhere this week where LGI's CEO comments that various parts of LGI have good and productive relationships with News Corp.

Given the content which News Corp either make or owe rights to, that's not surprising and is pretty sensible.

Sky and VM need each other. More VM needs Sky admittedly, but for Sky, VM = 3.7 million potential customers to sell TV wholesale / premium content to.

More to the point, the continued presence of a profitable pay TV company keeps the competition regulator at bay. Virgin customers might want Sky channels, but Virgin is very important for Sky, and not really because of its customer base.

Virgin are SKY's biggest customer. Imagine how much Virgin pay SKY annually for their channels and on demand content. SKY need Virgin, Virgin need SKY.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 1.

Virgin are Sky's biggest single customer, but offer Sky less than half the customer base that Sky have on their own. Without Virgin you could argue that Sky would probably be supplying those customers directly, and not at wholesale prices either, but then ofcom would be having something to say.

It's something to do with content providers not wanting anyone to be able to record something and then give the content to someone else to watch via their PVC I think, whereas by storing in the cloud you will have content linked to your account so only you can access it.

Well CSC Media did launch POP, Tiny Pop and True Movies on Virgin in October 2007.

And following it up in March 2011 with POP being removed for True Entertainment to launch.

So if Virgin Media has sign an two year deal it up at the end of this month.

As for Scientific Atlanta, yeah they are a big name brand, with lots of High street clout, did they try to push these via currys or comet? I bet if Sony or Panasonic had done the same thing it might have been a different story, oh wait they did with VR Recording, a recording that couldn't be re-copied.

But deals can be re-signed at anytime I mean:

In November 2008 Virgin Media signs an deal with Sky for both to carry the Sky Basic Channels on Virgin and for Sky to carry Virgin Media Channels on Astra until June 2011.

But Virgin Media sign an new 9 year deal in June 2010 when Virgin Media sold their channels to Sky.

I know, I was just pointing out making the drive removable doesn't help. In fact it makes your chances of losing content are slightly higher as there is more hardaware to go wrong (plus the risk of kids pulling out the drive and losing/dropping/smearing with marmite etc)

Would you really want a shelf-full of unplayable DVDs? Losing a hard drive is bad enough.

There is a suggestion that the main TV bulletins at 1 o'clock, 6 o'clock and 10 o'clock will be in HD from early March. The BBC News channel will launch in HD a few weeks later.

Reported sources for this information is a leaked Powerpoint presentation plus Tweets from BBC employees.

It wouldn't surprise me if VM were suddenly offered Sky News HD as a result of this.

It makes sense if they cannot sell it, cost effective too as the HD infrastructure is already in place and there will be no rights issues.

Indeed, we may see VM owning some of it's own channels again under the ownership of LGI.

So if Virgin Media has sign an two year deal it up at the end of this month.

Also Virgin did remove 27 SD Channels* and 28 HD Channels* plus an unknown channel on Tuesday night from Total Channels.

*The extra Sports channels that The BBC and Channel 4 did broadcast over July to September 2012 plus Eurosport 3D.

So base on that Virgin Media look set to reuse them and launch more new channels over the coming months.

Cinemagic's closing and we're getting the other two within the next fortnight so it would be unfair to include them.

But we still have Film4 HD exclusivity, it must be driving the customers in - in their droves.

In which case they could make a lockable snap out drive and provide VM techs with the key. The method was intended to be a quick fix to avoid losing recorded content when a box fails.

If anyone was that determined to share / swap drives they could just open up the box and remove it.

The point was to make it easier for a VM tech to transfer the drive from a faulty box to a replacement box. An alternative to taking the whole thing away resulting in lost recordings.

I expect most broadcasters would be concerned if disc cloning was possible. Sky's extra restriction is to prevent viewing after unsubscribing,

ESPN UK may be going, but I doubt ESPN America will. Don't forget that the version we get here covers more than just the UK and Ireland. Then there are two other versions (one for most of mainland Europe and one for the Middle East and Africa). As they don't have any local presenters and just take the entire US feed they don't have the same overhead that ESPN UK have, plus they don't have to worry about overpriced football contracts.

I'll take this with a pinch of salt however, as I just tested playing back a recording with the card removed. The recordings, including those from Sky basics played.

ESPN is an profitable American global cable television network and as such will soak up any small losses in parts of its worldwide operations.

I read over the weekend that BT had bought up rights to show many sporting events from ESPN. I will try to find the link tonight when I get home.

I don't think we will continue to receive ESPN programming after the current contract runs out (unless it is extended until September).

Unlike on Sky, the hard drive encryption is totally separate from the broadcast encryption, which is why you can play back without the card in. The disc encryption keys are built into the box.

That's because it has cached the subscription status. If you have a TiVo, remove the smartcard, reboot, then try playing a Sky recording. (You can't do this on V+ because it won't even let you access the Recordings menus if you don't have a PVR subscription)

Yes. That doesn't mean digital copying should be made easy too.

I don't think we will continue to receive ESPN programming after the current contract runs out (unless it is extended until September).

Here's the article about ESPN possibly pulling out of the UK.

http://www.mediaweek.co.uk/news/1169...CMP=ILC-SEARCH

Can't find the other one, but the following one is similar, referring to either Sky or BT buying these rights from ESPN. See also Media Boy's post below - that's where I read it!!

http://www.broadcastnow.co.uk/news/b...051306.article

ESPN is in talks to sell off its sports rights as part of a deal that could see the US broadcaster exit the UK.

Industry sources have indicated that the Disney-owned company has begun what are expected to be lengthy discussions with a number of broadcasters about offloading rights to showpiece events, such as the FA Cup.

ESPN is weighing up its future in the UK after missing out on Premier League rights last year. BT Sport swooped during the blind bidding process to strike a three-year, £738m deal to air 38 games a season starting in 2013/14.

Those familiar with the situation said BT and BSkyB are at the front of the queue to land the rights, and both are carrying out detailed work on the matter.

One source said that ESPN’s package of rights could be worth more than £15m. Its other events include the Scottish Premier League (SPL) and the German Bundesliga, while the broadcaster also airs US sport, such as Major League Baseball.

However, any deal is likely to be fraught with complications and negotiations are expected to be protracted. “I don’t expect to hear anything imminently,” said another well-placed industry insider.

If Sky or BT were to take on ESPN’s rights, each contract switch would have to be brokered and agreed in conjunction with the relevant sporting body.

TUPE employment protection regulations will also have to be considered, meaning staff will have the right to remain working on a contract even if it changes hands.

One source said this is likely to also include ESPN’stalent, raising the prospect of presenters and pundits including Ray Stubbs and Kevin Keegan working for new employers.

ESPN’s contracts are at varying levels of maturity. For example, it only holds FA Cup rights for another year, but its deal with the SPL is due to run for more than four years. It also has an agreement with Uefa to show at least one live Europa League match a match week until 2014/15.

ESPN’s carriage deals, including those with Sky and Virgin Media, are also understood to be adding another layer of complexity to the discussions. The broadcaster operates three channels, ESPN, ESPN Classic and ESPN America, in the UK.

A spokesman for the company said: “We don’t comment on rumours or speculation. We have said all along that we are active and exploring a range of potential options for our business, but we do not discuss private business strategy publicly.

“We continue to remain focused on our business, and the wide range of content and coverage we deliver to fans.”

Both Sky and BT declined to comment.

Maybe we will see if ESPN sells out to BT:
ESPN - BT Sports 1
BT Sports - BT Sports 2
ESPN America - BT Sports America
ESPN Classic - BT Sports Gold

With the BT Sports 2 SD slot on Sky being sold to an other broadcaster.

Well saying that if ESPN is sold to BT maybe BT will axe ESPN America and put it on BT Sports 1 or BT Sports 2.

It all rumours until confirmed by BT or ESPN.

SEVEN of these new channels are REPEAT channels of +1, which cannot be classed as new channels surely.

They're not currently available to VM customers, so they're new channels. The fact that they're timeshift channels (which a lot of people find useful, as you've had explained to you countless times) is irrelevant.
